Softball Week 3 - USF Tournament

We should have won Friday if we didn’t kick it around. That come from behind Toledo win may be the beginning of good things for us.

Well folks I did not get to watch the game today. I decided to watch the replay where I could stop and look at different elements of the game.
The Good: Callie threw the best game of the year as far as I can tell. Change up is wicked and mixed it up pretty well. I did not see the wildness of the past very much. Looked more controlled confident. Coaching was pretty good and Jenna is the best outfield on our team and up near the top in the conference.
Shipman wore the fences out except the one that hit the pole in center. Seen more fire from the rest of the ladies all night. Defense was adequate but nothing to right home about. Webber did well in RF and letting AA rest and hit was a good thing I think. If Hannon is not an every day player in CF then there is a bug in the rug! Milloy needs her confidence back and she will do well. Phillips is in the slump from last year.
The bad: Phillips has got to hit . Until we get Ashley back on the mound we are going to struggle. I would like to see Josie get to hit more but at least she is a keeper at short! Our baserunning has got to improve and the only thing Ally did wrong to day is dozing on third rather than scoring on the infield doubleplay. They said Karen was jumping up and down and Ally was hugging the base.
The ugly: Jenna stepped out of the box on every at bat but the ever present Ron Alexander brought the same glasses to the plate that he uses for Basketball!
JMHO as always! SS

I don't know if she even knows if she is doing it but Callie has at least three different versions of the change up. The one Stanford player had already completed her swing before the ball passed her. She turned to the dugout and threw up her hands. She also has a good curve and a drop. She will be special when she can spot her fastball consistently because she already gets people out with one hand tied behind her back a lot of times. ( Would have gotten a lot more people out with some more defensive help).

Yep saw that and she actually sprinted to the dugout!

If she's throwing strikes with the pitches she intends to throw strikes with, then she'll be among the most effective pitchers we've ever had here. Yesterday, even in a win, she threw less than half her pitches for strikes. Today, her ratio was much better. And you see the difference it made.

I was at three of the games this weekend. TV does not do justice to how hard Ally is hitting the ball right. Just a great swing combined with knowing what she is doing up there. You would think catchers would be the best at reading pitches but many don’t carry that into the box.

I wonder why baseball doesn’t use this technique? Probably because it doesn’t work. Let the girls hit. Enough with fake bunting.

You don't watch much college softball beyond UT, do you? It's an extremely common technique used by virtually every hitting coach in college and travel ball. Florida, Oklahoma, UCLA, they all use it for hitters that need the timing adjustment. And it does work. Sorry you haven't noticed in your extremely small sample size of today.

Why does baseball not use it? Well, in case you haven't noticed, baseball and softball are different sports. Why doesn't softball use a mound? Why doesn't baseball only play 7 innings? The questions are endless. It's almost like the rules and strategy for different sports are different.

Wrong I have been around the sport longer than you have been alive young boy. Those colleges that you named above don’t force they’re hitters do use it. If a girl uses it it’s because she’s comfortable with it already not forced into doing it. I’ve played men’s fast pitch where it is not used either. Are you going to tell me it’s a different sport? Swinging a bat is swinging a bat it does not matter if it’s baseball or softball. Innings played or mound or no mound have any thing to do with swinging a bat. I take everything you say with a grain of salt. You call the games with no integrity imo!

I have coached both baseball which we use it at times to give the batter a chance to make sure they are seeing the ball better. Softball as well. I know many do it and many do not and that is the reason that coaching is difficult. Opinions are as varied as rear ends.

Most of us have missed your call and when will you be back?

No integrity???😂 please explain! Brain does a great job calling the games and he loves Lady Vol softball. You saying such a classless thing about him definitely speaks volumes about your own integrity though.

Horrible post. I doubt you know a fraction of what you want people to believe. Leave Brian alone. He’s one of the good guys.

North Carolina coming in will be a tough matchup for us Tuesday. Pickett is off to a terrible start and none of NC's pitchers have done very well to this point which means watch out Lady Vols. Pickett is a very capable pitcher and even though she hasn't had it yet this season doesn't mean she can't find it against us. Need to win hopefully Turner can stay in the zone she was in Sunday.

I think the coaches this year are doing a number of positive things with this young team. Hannon was put in center for hitting and fielding. Webber needed to be in for her bat now and she played pretty well out there in right. Holcomb is not great at the plate right now but I too would struggled with taking her D out of left. McCrary would have been at third probably if she hadn't been hit by the pitch in the arm. Rolling with what is working and not being rigid in a static lineup is a great thing. Managing egos is why they are paid. So thumbs up on some of the changes.

Karen just said on radio their best pitcher is hurt. They got off to a good start then lost her and have struggled some. I don't know if she will be back for us or not. Hopefully whoever they throw we stay locked in.

Yes seems like she broke something. On a positive note, a friend was at the games this weekend and talked to Ashley’s mom. She said she will be back any day so hopefully we will see her this weekend.

We would have won 3 or more games if Ashley was available to be a closer . She may not be in top notch shape but even at that she is special. Don't think we will ever see her bale out on us. She is a LV for life!

She looked good in the bullpen on Friday, but it was not the weekend to bring her back even if she could. The weather was brutal Friday, low temps and the wind was ripping. Saturday was a little better and Sunday was ok. Not the time to bring someone back from a movement injury.

Coaches that use it usually say it helps timing or helps to see the ball/pitcher better or shortens the swing. You say you've used it to help the batter see the ball better. I understand how turning the upper body to face the pitcher during the windup can let you see better. A lot of batters have a slightly open stance to see better, then close up as the pitch is released and they load up. But you can turn your upper body to face the pitcher with your hands in their normal batting position, even without having an open stance. How does adding the step of separating your hands and sticking the bat across the plate help? It seems like an unnecessary step that just complicates what is already the hardest thing to do in sports, hit a 95 mph baseball or 68 mph softball. Not saying you are wrong. Just wondering the rationale.

He took a jab a me first. He needs to stick with his play by play and not come on this forum and pretend to know about hitting progressions when he doesn’t.
