Some Thoughts on the UT BB season so far

Damn it, now I'm gonna get banned for interjecting facts. Damn my logic.
If you had mentioned that Lopez may well be the best true center in the Eastern Conference now, you'd be at a ban worthy level of fact in your post.

Why would interject facts into the discussion?

I have to say, Hat, MHF is right on this one. There is no way a guy that has a career .500 record with so-so talent in the NBA could possibly match wits with geniuses like John Pelphrey, Darrin Horn, and Kevin Stallings.

no way frank could compare to what pelphrey did out of conference last year.

For all of CBP's faults, you can't replace him with someone who isn't a proven winner. Hat, using your same philosophy in Football when we were looking for a coach, you said you wanted someone who has a history of winning championships. Lane wasn't one of those types but he has turned out well so far. However, Lane was replacing a lame duck coach. Pearl isn't that right now.

I do think we need to apply the same standards to our basketball program as we do our football program. Just getting to the tournament isn't good enough anymore. As a fan base, we shouldn't be pleased with that just because we have had sub par teams in the past. We have excellent facilities and the money to support a top notch program and we should demand that. If Pearl doesn't take this team to the Elite 8, he should consider himself on the hot seat.

Pull the list I put together of guys I would have contacted if I were in charge of UT's football coaching search. Pretty sure Kiffin was in the top 3 or 4.

He might be. I was just going off of memory. I would have put Kiffin in my top 3 as well.

My point being however, is that we should hold the basketball team to the same standards as we do the football program.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl will make an average of $2.3 million annually through his new six-season contract, which ranks him among the best-paid basketball coaches in the country.

Pearl will earn $1.6 million in the 2008-09 season but is also receiving a one-time $250,000 bonus and an upfront retention bonus of $1.5 million this year. His salary will increase incrementally to $2.2 million in the 2013-14 season.

Should Pearl, 48, leave Tennessee in the next year, his buyout would cost $2.5 million — a figure that will decrease incrementally over the next four years to $1 million.

..............................

Pearl's contract includes a base salary of $350,000, $500,000 for media commitments, a $500,000 equipment fee and a $250,000 endorsement fee.

He will receive bonuses based on the team's highest achievement each season. Winning an SEC regular season or tournament comes with a $75,000 bonus, a Final Four appearance nets a $100,000 bonus and a national championship earns an extra $250,000. He also would receive a $25,000 bonus for being named SEC coach of the year or $50,000 for national coach of the year.

I think we should wait until the end of the season to pass judgements on a guy that wins games and has a current top 5 recruiting class. I have been very frustrated over the past 3 years with how we play in the final minutes of a close crucial game. When u are down one with 17 sec left in a foul-a-thon against Purdue you do not settle for a 3 point shot from Wayne with 3 sec left, u either let Scotty or Tyler drive to the rim and hopefully make it or get fouled or you give Tatum or Hopson a chance to score off a pick. Just like against Okie St, why was Tyler shooting a desperation fade away 360 3 pointer with 4 sec left? Pearl needs to let his players know what to do at end of games, a go to guy needs to step up but BP is a good coach that needs a true PG NOW! So lets see how we play against Memphis, UK, Kansas, UF, etc b4 we go lookin for a new coach.

Pearl doesn't tell his players to do anything on the court. Zero on court discipline.

That's why we're streetballers!

At least it's fun to watch, I guess.

Buzz Williams makes between 800k and 1Mil a year. We could double his salary and have a better coach.

I think Williams is a good coach. However, let him do something before pushing him into elite status. Pearl beat him head to head.

I don't.

I thought he looked fair of what I saw last year; however, I will readily admit that I don't know tons about Marquette basketball. But I do feel like in this situation that Pearl is a better coach than Williams.

Eric Musselman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Beachdawgs and the Rapid City Thrillers do not an excellent resume make...

If you have an outstanding reputation at the highest levels of basketball, why are you a regional CSS color commentator whose only job offer is to coach a team in Russia?

Honestly I think this is why Pearl critics do not often put names out there to replace him. I do not have any posts from 4 years ago about who we should have gotten instead, but I have a guy above who got a DUI and was considered not good enough to replace another 70 plus year old drunk in Sutton.

There have been lots of wannabe ADs who said Billy G was the man, or Pelphrey is a stud etc and then they flame out in a spectacular fashion.

Bruce Pearl makes the tournament every year. He does not advance that far in the tournament. He has 4 seniors and we all have very high expectations for his team. After we play Kansas we should have an idea of whether or not our expectations are realistic.

You got drilled on the Lawrence Frank argument so you jumped to the next one? You need to learn when to give up.

Emain you are making me laugh.

I destroyed those who claimed Lawrence Frank is clearly an improvement on Bruce.

Some said he won with no talent. I pointed out talent he had he could not win with. Then some said "he cannot help the lack of talent, he is not the GM"

Whatever...Lawrence Frank did his best work with guys who had just recently had a different coach and he failed dramatically as a coach once it was guys he was involved in bringing in and coaching up.

He had public fights with some of his best players (Devin Harris go very angry) and he is not swimming in job offers.

Musselman was even more fun because it was even easier to show how truly absurd it is to claim that we should bring him to TN.

Why would he? It's not like someone on here is going to bring up the fact Musselman passed up multiple offers to be an NBA assistant or scouting director this offseason to travel around meeting with top coaches to get a better feel for the college game in order to decide if he wants to make that transition.
