Something that caught my eye....

It's just the perception of things really. What's easier to sell, a program that has a positive fan base who supports their coach?? Or one that has many fans who can't wait for their HC to leave so they can get someone else?? Worked out great for Fulmer the last 4 years he recruited.
You're talking about some pollyanna ideal of a program that doesn't exist except for the defending national champions every year.

I think recruits will see what they want to see. If they want Neyland to be awesome, it will be. I've heard kids say how awesome Neyland was at some game where I thought the crowd was deflated and bored. On the other hand, if a kid wants to imagine that the team is racially divided, he'll see that, too.

I agree with you, which is why it's important to stay upbeat and positive right now.

I don't care if anyone agrees with me. If I did that, I would have stopped posting long ago.

People do agree with you... I remember Markeith Ambles having his video chat thing, in December I think. He asked why all the "Tennessee fans were hating..." He was 18, and so called "Tennessee fans" were sending profane messages to him. That would have to bare some impact...

If that is what tips the balance to the "I don't want to go there" side, then I'd much rather see him somewhere else. It never would though. Have you noticed that no one is agreeing with you? Sometimes that is an indicator of how valid your point is.

Now I'm moving on to a topic of relevance.

You can't speak for other people, kids look for various things when considering a school. One could be the fanbase, and stuff like this. Every person is different so I don't see how you can say stuff like this doesn't matter and plays no role.

For what its worth eric, I agree with you.

Um. I'm not sure you do agree with me.

For the record, if I'm a recruit, I don't give a crap what the fans think. I'd talk to the current players - the ones who actually have an idea what things are going to be like.

This is coming from you though, not some 17 year old kid whose never made a big decision in his life. It's easy for us to sit here and say what you just said, but accepting that a kid may use info he gets on here or other places as part of the his decision is hard for most to accept.

So we should shutdown discussion in the recruiting forum and post nothing but 40 times and occasional links to the Knox County Chamber of Commerce and testimonials about how much fun you can have at Dollywood.

Every recruit doesn't think just like you. Every recruit is different, every person is different. That's something you probably should have learned in elementary school..

I was a 17 year old kid. I made a choice from several schools, many of which were offering scholarships. I had the same experience when applying for grad school. If you've got half a brain, you talk to the people currently in the position you're considering.

It's why a great host like Chris Walker can help us out.

So, was your experience based on athletics or academics??

Academics. It wasn't a big deal to talk to guys in fields in which I was thinking of majoring.

I don't understand how an academic scholarship and an athletic one can be discussed as having the same process to decide though. There is a huge amount more of possibilities to decide when choosing a school for an athletic scholarship versus an academic one.

Eric, what’s happened to you since the coaching change? You were fine while CLK was here. Since DD was hired it seems like you think your primary goal is defending Dooley’s every move. Calling people out for not thinking he’ll succeed and not blindly supporting our coach. The thing is, we just hired a 17-20 coach from the WAC, why you question people who don’t think he’ll succeed is beyond me. Logic says Dooley will never win it all. If he succeeds great, but the chances based on his track record and what he’s done and said so far lead me to believe he’ll be a poor man’s Mike Shula.

Now call me a troll and ask why I have a USC logo, go ahead. Head over to the basketball forum, I laugh at the Anti-Pearls all day and love the direction of the program. All I care about is winning and Pearl has shown he’ll do that, and I believe based on what I saw of his recruiting and gameplanning ability Kiffin would’ve won too. Almost nothing Dooley has done has impressed me. He retained two good coaches and hired an excellent coach in Baggett, and what I believe will be an excellent hire in Heistand. However, other than that he hasn’t done anything that will slightly improve the program. He has made some very poor decisions staff wise (not just coaches) and has not shown he is SEC ready when it comes to handling recruiting IMO.

Secondly, I’ve been an SC fan my whole life because I was born in LA. I moved to Knoxville and as a child and am a much bigger Vol fan. However, SC is my second team so to speak and CLK did nothing to change that.

Your a torn man. :p

Not exactly sure how you missed this sentence. Maybe you skipped over it.

The quote says he's worried about info getting out, and as such either 1)a negative fanbase response through misperception or 2) a negative response with recruiting

that quote doesn't say anywhere anything along the lines of him saying that he thinks negative fan output - on message boards or wherever - is swaying recruits in their decisions

I've been told that it may not end up being the back breaker and absolute deal breaker for recruits, but things that are perceived as negatives within the fanbase and from within the program, recruits pick up on quick. These guys want to be welcomed by the program they choose, and the real good thing about gameday is that most of our more positive fans end up there, and the negative one's sit there and complain in front of the TV all day about the team. Not saying all fans that stay home are like that, but a lot are.

but there's a world of difference between the actual effect a typed message on a message board will have and say the more serious stuff...like the fans wearing paper bags or walking out at halftime of a 17 point game

the latter are the kinds of things that get to them, usually because they relate and show actual fan unrest and possible soon upcoming program problems...if the coach is about to get the boot, they don't want to go somewhere where the coach could be gone in less than a year

however, a recruit deciding based on what we type here....not only is that highly unlikely, but it would be like if a kid decided not to go to UT because he read the comments following an ESPN.com article and saw some random people typed "UT suckz!!" and "Vols are gayz!"...it just doesn't actually work that way, especially with this means of communication at this point
