Sousa out as director of the POSL...

For defending a man that taught me that there are things in life bigger than myself, the value of tradition and family, who taught me several life lessons that I would've missed out on anywhere else? Yeah, you can say I'm attached. For yet another time, I don't agree with the way he went about this, but knowing him as I do, he wouldbt jeopardize the students or the organization unless he felt he had no other way. Bash the man all you want for not bending over and taking it, but I admire the premise of his actions. People idolize Jones for the arguing with referees (ie standing up for his players) but castrate this man for standing up for his members? Hypocrisy much?

You needed a band director to teach you this?

Romines had a completely different take on things than Sparky did. Romines never would have responded to heckling by turning the Pride towards the PKA houe at 7 in the mornng on gameday and playing Psych Warmup at full f'n blast like Sparky did. He did put my favorite Circle Drill on field, though... Turn the truck around, watch out for that awning.

This whole thing... it's like Mr. Popsicle just died.
I got the feeling that Romines never cared much for the marching band. I will give him credit for the Bach Contrapunctus show though. Tough to march as it was in 5/4 I believe.

I love how people always try to make passive-aggressive jabs at others who defend someone who, up until now, has done everything the right way. But if you think the AD would've cut the travel down this much with Julian, or even the previous AD, you're crazy. It's easy for you to say "get over it" to the current members, but I doubt you'd be saying that if you were a current member. Or it happened to you when you marched. I just know that Sousa would not have let it explode like this if he saw a way to resolve it. Accept that or not, that's the way it is.

I don't understand the gripes about cutting travel at all.

In the middle of the financial mess UT is trying to dig itself out of, you expect them to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars sending the band places simply because that's how its always been done? If the money is there, by all means, send them. But if its not, would you rather them cut travel or staff? Travel or equipment?

Why should the band be immune to budget cuts that the other groups have to take? The attitude some are exhibiting regarding cuts is that of a 4 year old in ToysRUs screaming "NO, I DON'T CARE...I WANT IT!"

If its that big of a deal, then go ask your donors/alums like every other department on campus.

For those of us out of the area, could someone provide an update as to whether the students who spoke out publicly (including Miss Henderson; not sure I understand who or what she is) have been disciplined because of this? And if so, how severe it was? thanks :hi:

The students were not punished because they acted on incorrect information from their leader. The dean of the school of music covered this during the meeting on Monday.

Except they did cut travel under the last AD, down to two overnight full band trips per year. That's still one more trip than 11 of the 13 other SEC schools do. Only Alabama and LSU travel the full band to more than on regular season game.

I understand you're unhappy about the changes, but you have to understand this isn't the only place this is going on. Big Ten teams only travel once a year, and usually don't even send a pep band to other games.

Since 2011, only LSU and Alabama have brought their full bands to Neyland.

Will there be band representation at the weekly production meeting going forward?

I don't see the cheer squad sit at home on road games. Not once.

Hopefully some of the issues get clarified and resolved. It seems a lot of this may be lack of communication and it seemed like Sousa didn't want to bridge that gap.

I see the argument you're trying to make, but you're leaving out the details you don't want people to see. Butch arguing with referees isn't the same thing as him giving his players false information in order to try and change his budget/in game participation situation.

I understand that the guy stood for something he believed in, I respect that actually. His comment that he didn't care if he got fired shows that. And I get your point in that he wouldn't have done what he did if he thought there was another way. All good points. BUT...I think it is very irresponsible to make a statement like "...for standing up for his members?" knowing how he did it. You can't say you disagree with what he did then in turn say he's standing up for his members. If he gets canned without lifting his policy, which keeps the members completely clear of everything, then you are completely correct. Since that didn't happen, you are completely wrong.

In 2009, Kiffin moved the time of the Vol Walk closer to kick off. This made the March to the Stadium closer to kickoff, making the Pride take a shorter route to the stadium by going down the pedestrian walkway around that sculpture. This was a horrible route, and negatively affected the Pride. Sousa went to the AD, and they resolved it by moving the March to the Stadium back, but forcing the members at the Vol Walk to miss performing Salute to the Hill. Based*on him working with the AD there to resolve that issue (while some members still got the shaft), this is telling that there is more to the issue from the AD side than they're letting on. And why shouldn't they? Butch gets it, just like Kiffin did. No, I'm not comparing the two extensively, but just that the AD will jump through hoops for the hot topic while screwing some groups over.

I highly doubt the two groups are anything close to comparable.

So your argument is that the band should be immune from budget pressures regarding travel simply because of a perceived tradition?

And FWIW, why don't you go ahead and let us all in on the massive issue you believe exists between the AD and the band? Lay it all out there.

"Bama Bangs" Dave is a Bama ALUM who I think is here to undermine the program. He hired Butch just to get UT good enough to make Bama look good in the BCS standings but not good enough to top the Tide. Hopefully this comes back to bite him, but that's the reason we did not have a "grand slam" hire.

You need to post less...like a whole hell of a lot less.

So the band, who has been in existence longer than the football team and has performed at games for over 100 years is more disposable than high pitched This side be Orange! This side White!"?

I don't know what it is, I've said that numerous times. but whatever it is made Sousa lift his strictest policy. Something REALLY set him off to do that. And if you think the AD and University wouldn't be in psync with each othe , due to the money for the University and extra "help" and all to keep the stars eligible, if there was, then you're crazy.

Monetarily, yes.

It takes a lot less money to send cheerleaders than to send the entire band.

Congratulations! You just made my list of Top Five "Stupidest Posts of All Time".

Believe me, it's very HARD to crack that list. I have seen some truly jaw-droppingly idiotic posts over the years, but my friend, you have some real talent!

Please continue to post! I can use the amusement. :)

Something tells me that the money issues with the AD are far from being resolved. The $4 million to actually GIVE UP A HOME GAME to VTI (which I disapprove of) coupled with a seemingly penny-pinching move with the band all suggest this.

The sooner we get the Doolander off the roles, the better. :banghead2::banghead2::banghead2:

I can't believe we are still paying that [family board!]

Absolutely I'd love full band to go everywhere. I didn't go to Cal, UCLA, Arkansas, or Ole Miss. Just a pep band. I know that's not feasible right now, but when you have a group of 300 people playing your fight song, both official and unofficial, every game despite the poor product on the field, staying in the stadium for the WHOLE game while the student section is 2/3 empty and 30k of the announced 84k have left, they deserve some slack.

I'm not all that concerned with full band. There's no excuse to not send at least a 30 member pep band.

Ok, lay out how much you believe it costs to send the 30 member pep band, associated staff, and equipment to Columbia, Missouri.

And where that money can be cut from to pay for it.

And I'll ask again, why don't they just try to raise the money rather than demanding it based on tradition?

They did NOT give up a home game for the Bristol game.
