Spence "informally" offered OC job

I would like to think so to but if that's the case why are all the candidates "behind the scenes" other than Spence if they did, in fact, go over many of them. It's no secret that Spence is the only name we have heard about getting an interview and now we hear he is getting an offer. You do the math, either they are hiding their other choice or Spence is the first interview and he is getting an offer. What is it?

I don't think the other choice -- or, rather, the main choice -- is hidden at all. It's Kippy from all accounts. I'm still not sold on the fact that Spence has been offered. I have no idea what is really going on behind the scenes, but I don't assume that CPFl has offered his lone interviewee simply b/c it's an internet rumor. But we shall see. .

I don't think that Fulmer has been the primary of anyone I can recall of in recent memory. Fulmer is the closer, and a good one he is.

Your whole 'primary' vs. 'secondary' analysis is breaking down. Was Fulmer the 'secondary' or was he the 'closer'?

All I know about recruiting I learned from Michael Lewis, so take this for what its worth. I think it all goes through the head coach. The head coach has a hand in getting every recruit. Obviously the head coach doesn't have infinite time and can't stay in contact with all the recruits on a daily basis, so the head coach delegates.

Can the guy recruit? If so then thats about all we can hope for from this hire. Spence doesn't strike me as some genius coordinator. I

My skills are just fine. I agree that formations arent the "end all" of an offense, but just from your post, you bashed the spread. Hatcher runs a form of the spread. That is a fact. Does he run the spread option like Florida or West Virginia? No. But he does run a spread. Your attempt at always bashing people and acting like you are the only authority on football is amusing at best. I do enjoy your posts from time to time and also the interviews with the basketball coaches. Your negativity, ostentatiousness, and aloofness however, are annoying.

UT ran several versions of the spread in this year alone. Most people are referring to the spread option, misdirection, "trick" offense that Meyer et al run.

I don't want to see UT follow fad offenses. Take me back to the future... power running game coupled with an aggressive passing game that forces defenses to defend every corner of the field.

It is possible we land both Kippy and Spence. A former UT player was saying a while back that Kippy was moving back to Knoxville next year regardless of if he is on the staff or not. He also said that he may not return as an OC, but possibly just a positions coach. Can Spence coach QBs or RBs? He could take OC and QBs or RBs while Kippy takes assistant HC and WRs. Just saying...

Spence is a QBs coach. We could also hire Hugh Freeze for TEs/recruiting coordinator and get the guy from Miami for DBs. Then we'd only need a RBs coach.

Spence was a Tight end in college just for info. He is considered a good QB/TE/O-line guy. We would need RB and WR coach for sure to go with.

OC-Spence
WRs/AHC-Kippy
QBs-Sanders
TEs/RC-Freeze
RBs-Whit, Jr.
DBs-Walton

Napier could also be a candidate at TEs and Sanders could also be a candidate for recruiting coordinator. I don't think that would be a bad staff, at all.

hiring an offensive genius that KY beat. Surely Not!!!! But if he turns out to be our man  Ill support him.

KY beat LSU too. Stuff happens. Spence is not a bad pick if the staff is beefed up. Spence and then some jokers would not be good.

IMHO:

Sanders is not coming back in 2 seasons, after the way he was run out of UT. His children were having problems at school.

Spence won't take an OC job he has to share when he alread has an OC job he doesn't share.

Kippy will not leave a job as an NFL WR position coach to take a job as a college WR position coach. He would have to be offered something better then he already has at the NFL level, like the OC job.

No, he's moving to Knoxville next year so it'd be twice as convenient.

However, he turned down the WR coaching job 2 years ago when Cutcliffe was hired.
I read somewhere that part of that decision was that he needed to get another year or two in the NFL to qualify for a full pension benefit at retirement.

I dont see Kippy coming to UT to just coach WR. Spence will not come just to coach QBs when he is already an OC.

IMO, whoever becomes the next OC will bring in 1 or 2 other staff members with them.
