Spence "informally" offered OC job

I'd say he could have stayed a lot more "in his comfort zone" than Rob Spence.

It's comical watching people jump on a hire before it's even made. I'm sure a lot of people really have reasons for not being excited about the guy . . . I'm also sure that a lot of people have no earthly idea what his offense even looks like.

Yeah, the 3 points they scored against Georgia Tech were impressive. The fact they scored 17 at home against BC with a trip to the title game on the line is even more awe inspiring.

I don't think anyone has a perfect resume so you can always pick out a game here or a game there. I can think of choices that would make a lot less sense to me.

we can only base our opinions on the offense that Clemson ran. Assuming he was calling the plays, it's empirical fact that Clemson's offense was pretty inconsistent.

They've lost 4 games the last two seasons within their conference where they scored 17 or fewer points. The idea that Spence is some offensive genius held back by a bad defense is not backed up by the facts. 7 against Va. Tech and 12 against Maryland last year. 3 against Georgia Tech and 17 against BC this year. Clemson's choking away two shots at the ACC title game is directly attributable to it's offense vomiting all over itself in big games.

Consistent enough to be tops in the ACC.

If we are only considering coaches that have never lost and have won multiple conference championships it might be a short list.

Yeah, 3 points against Georgia Tech screams best offense. It's not tough to run up nice stats when you're good at beating up the Furmans and Dukes of the world.

Same kind of teams that everyone else in the ACC played.

This is how we end up with mediocre coaches. In his time in a BCS conference, Spence has proven to be thoroughly uninspiring.

Other than Trooper Taylor of Greg Adkins, name one off the initial list of prospective candidates.

Give me two numbers greater than zero but less than 3 other than 1 or 2. :p

Seriously, I would take him over Kippy Brown as an OC. At least he's called plays and had experience recruiting.

That's right. Kippy Brown didn't recruit any quality players when he was at UT. I bet he'd have no idea how to do that.

Give me 5,000 yards of total offense and I'll bring in Zig Ziglar and Tony Robbins if any further inspiration is needed.

Considering a coach from a staff that has actually won a title in a BCS conference wouldn't be a bad place to start.

Yeah, we can get 650 against UAB and 200 against Florida. That is how Spence got his averages at Clemson.

Well, all the people yelling for some form of the spread will get their wish. When Spence fails miserably, and he will, I would hope fans forget about formations and focus on competence when it comes to coaches.

I find myself mostly agreeing (God help me). It is more about consistent execution than anything else. You could run a power T every play and win if every block was perfectly executed and the RB hits the exact best hole, and never turn it over.

Who are your top 3 again?
Tennessee wouldn't consider calling any of the guys I would want. I don't even worry about our coaching searches anymore. They've gotten one right in the last decade. No reason to expect anything else.
