Spence "informally" offered OC job

Tennessee wouldn't consider calling any of the guys I would want. I don't even worry about our coaching searches anymore. They've gotten one right in the last decade. No reason to expect anything else.

So you don't like the potential hire and you're too cool to list anybody you like. :)

Who's that, Rodney Garner?

Well, all the people yelling for some form of the spread will get their wish. When Spence fails miserably, and he will, I would hope fans forget about formations and focus on competence when it comes to coaches.
So you think if he hires Spence, Fulmer will scrap his offense and we will run the spread exclusively now?

Then give me your top three of the candidates mentioned.

Hence, Clemson is an 8-4 garbage program.
I don't disagree. I think their head coach is garbage.

But he's a man and he's forty...

I've already mentioned Kevin Wilson. I have no issue with Chris Hatcher. Kippy Brown is not a bad idea. There are plenty of others, this has just played out as I expected.

By the way, I'm not one of the ones who thinks we need to hop on the bandwagon and become a "spread team". It's in our playbook and with the right talent, I think we could run it more than we have with some success.

Kevin Wilson has done a nice job. Not sure if he would leave Oklahoma. I suppose if money was the only factor maybe.

I don't have an issue with Hatcher either.

I think things would have played out as expected if we hired Kippy. To me, that would be Fulmer staying in his comfort zone. I'd take Kippy as a receivers coach but I'm not sold that he could be a successful oc here. I may be in the minority on this one.

There you go with the alien talk again..... :birgits_giggle:

Frontal lobotomy kicking in now.

After reading the Clemson Board and their support of Spence. It seems like we maybe getting more of the same on the Short Passes and Play Calling...

Outside of the fact that he's been a coordinator at a mediocre BCS conference program that has consistently failed offensively in big games, I can't come up with one.

We may not agree on a lot but this if QFT.

I cant understand why we would hire this guy. I mean shouldnt he be doing good things at Clemson if we want him to do the same thing here at UT? Eh.....

The first thing that sticks out to me is that for what talent there is on Clemson's team - he's not been involved in recruiting any of them. Rivals doesn't list him as the recruiter for any prospect over the past four years (I stopped looking after that). Unless he's bringing Dabo Swinney with him (who looks to move into the OC at Clemson when Spence leaves) I don't understand this hire if it is indeed true.

I think our OC should have some involvement with recruiting.

Here's a quick comparison recruiting-wise between what we're losing and possible candidates.

2007

CUTCLIFF
Ben Martin
B.J. Coleman

TROOPER
Eric Berry
Lennon Creer
Rolando Melancon
Nevin McKenzie
Denarius Moore
Ahmad Paige

LUKE
Chris Donald
Rufus Williams

ROPER
Chris Walker

SPENCE
None

LOCKSLEY
7 including Arrelious Benn

It strikes me as odd that Spence has no recruiting experience to speak of at any school he's been at. I looked through some of the other SEC and BCS conferences to see if it's abnormal for the OC not to be heavily involved with the recruiting. As I suppected it seems that the OC is at least responsible for a few recruits - this guy has no record of ever being the main recruiter for a player. This seem weird to anyone else?

Give me 5,000 yards of total offense and I'll bring in Zig Ziglar and Tony Robbins if any further inspiration is needed.

Since he took over at Clemson as OC this is where Clemson has ranked in total offense:

2007 47th
2006 15th
2005 53rd

I haven't got a great feeling about this. I'm just basing my judgement of him by watching Clemson play recently. I don't see how he's all that dynamic. I have no idea if Kippy would be a good play caller, but he did certainly bring in the talent when he was here. I think everyone wanted a breath of fresh air, but I just don't know. BTW, we will never run the spread here on a consistent basis while Fulmer is coach, and I think that's a good thing, It's ok once in a while, but not all the time.

Keep in mind, this isn't even official... and if we do hire him, I will give him a chance. But with the state of football right now, he better show some improvement right away. It would be nice to outcoach someone for a change.

I was hoping I would open this thread and you would be talking about how bad he sucked. We would be assured a good offense next year in that case.
