Spence "informally" offered OC job

At least we can expect to beat South Carolina most of the time. Looking at the common opponents since Spence has been at Clemson... Here's the numbers put up by UT and Clemson.

2005 - USC
UT: 15 L
Clem: 13 W

2006 - USC
UT: 31 W
Clem: 28 L

2006 - UK
UT: 17 W
Clem: 20 L

2007 - USC
UT: 27 W
Clem: 23 W

If you want more evidence of how Clemson's offense competes against SEC defenses, they'll be playing Auburn on New Year's Eve.

I would think that Clemson doesnt have the talent on offense that UT does. These numbers look pretty good to me.

They've got two good running backs. They just got a top QB recruit. They just had QB Charlie Whitehurst back in 2005 who was a pretty high draft pick, I believe.

Spence is of the same mold as Cutcliffe. He won't differ much from what we currently run if hired. It will be the same old crap over and over again. I think we could do much worse, but I think we could do much better. I also thought that we were gonna make our coordinators higher paid?? $350,000 is close to what Cut was making if I am not mistaken. Looks like Hamilton is definitely raising the bar.

How is that?

Balanced offense, for the most part. Go back and look at what he had to work with 94-98 and let me know the percentages. I would almost guarantee you that we ran the ball 45-48% of the time and threw it the rest. That's what Spence brings to the table and that's why Fulmer wouldn't go outside the box if Spence is hired.

I think pretty much 90% of offensive coordinators strive for a balanced attack. That's why guys like Paul Johnson and Mike Leach are seen as exotic.

This year though, Cut's percentage was much higher pass because he gave up on the running game to early most of the time. Spence and Cut are pretty much though made of the same mold. Good coordinators and great QB coaches, IMO.

I guess Spence coached Bruce Gradkowski for a couple of years at Toledo. I still don't think many coaches would agree with the idea that Cutcliffe and Spence are really similar.

It's hard to convert ACC numbers to SEC numbers but if you look at the total team defense rankings you'll see that at least 9 ACC schools were allowing around 350ypg or less. It's not a bad conference this year defense-wise, despite Fl.State and Miami being down. There are guys who'd I'd prefer to see in Knoxville (Marrone, Hatcher or Crowton) but I'd much rather have Spence than Kippy. Now I have a reason to watch the Chick-fil-A bowl.

I have tp say that Im really excited by this news and for no other reason than it's not Adkins.

Yeah, 3 points against Georgia Tech screams best offense. It's not tough to run up nice stats when you're good at beating up the Furmans and Dukes of the world.

Bingo. That's the gripe these Clemson fans in my area have with Spence. He padded his numbers vs. the cream puffs, but laid an egg against the ACC opponents of value.

from one of their boards....

UT board

The Vols are talking as if this is a done deal. Consider the source, hysteria. Now their board has become a Clemson Offense bashing session. I guess they've forgotten the peach. They're assuming that because of the report that he has been offered, no one would turn down that job, and fatmer won't let him change their offense. Making alot of asses. I am resolved to the fact that he makes his own decision, and Clemson will be Clemson after he makes it. Just awed by the audacity and grammar of the Pumpkin Nation.

actually alot of Clemson fans seem to have this notion...

I think Tommy told Spence to go Tennessee to do the interview so he (Tommy) would have more leverage in getting Spence more money. That was one of the sticking piont in Bowden's contract, which was getting his assistants more money. That's what I would do. Now Tommy can go to TDP and say "I told you so, I told you we need to pay our assistants more" Now he's going to say, "If you want a winning program here then you're going to have to match all of these other Universities and pay our assistants more".

Spence will stay, and get a fat raise in the process, this is just business, and Tommy knows how to play the game

I'm not so sure that Spence isn't using this interview as leverage to stay at Clemson with a bigger salary.

Well... if this whole thing turns out to be a legit offer and it's accepted, I really don't have much to say..

I'm not impressed with Spence even being on the list, personally.

I'm eagerly awaiting all the reasons why this is a bad hire.

You're in the right place for plenty of negative opinions, as you know.

If it works out it could be OK. If I were picking nits, I was hoping we'd go with a little more youthful approach.

Is Spence a QB coach? If not, who will they get? The Vols will also need at least two top flight recruiters to replace Taylor and Luke. It's starting to look like they really need Slade to retire so they can have another slot.
