Star Wars: Episode VII (December 18, 2015) ***SPOILERS***

I did not like the black dude, I thought he was completely out of place. the battle with that black dude and the jedi should have lasted about 15 sec. the jedi could have picked him and thrown him a couple of times against a tree.

other than that I thought they did a really good job. I saw it in 3d, I wasn't too impressed but it could have been the theater, I didn't see it in imax.

What do you mean he was "out of place"?

Lol smdh

1. So EVERYTHING besides the "black dude" was really good?

2. Jedi?

i like that JJ took old and mixed with the new. i think franchise needed that. JJ obviously has an eye for the battle scenes, as well every character had that look. Star Wars is an adventure series, iyam. but Kylo is no Sith (pun?) hes no Darth, hell. not even Dooku. I was expecting a ton more from not only his character, but from overall plot. I get Harrison not wanting to be in all three...those guys are getting old. But, the exclusion of Luke Skywalker until the end just flat out makes 0 sense. And that light saber battle. A girl with 0 saber experience juat picked it up and beat a seasoned Darkside villian with training. (Wasnt Luke's training complete when he built his own Saber?) i remember a scene where Luke could barely beat a toy shooting little blasters at him. he had to learn to harneas the force. it def wasnt th prequels and to that im thankful. but dont try to pass Kylo (the cryer) off to us as a real villian. he got that ass kicked already by someone with 0 training. those are my only complaints, the rest was very good

I think a lot of it was Kylo kept taking the helmet off. I think once was enough. Everything after that made him appear weaker. Plus, we understood that Vader was disfigured and needed the helmet. Kylo was just wearing it like a hat.

Saw it in 3D due to convenience of show time. It was pretty good. The opening scroll in 3D was interesting LOL. The flight scenes were amazing especially with the Falcon on Jakku.

I really liked the new characters Fin, Rey, and Poe. I kind of expected more from Ren but I liked the overall direction of the character. Phasma was a complete waste and the New Order General whose name escapes me was no Moff Tarkin. Snoke was a very generic Emperor archetype to really form an opinion on.

I 100% agree about the score! Half way through I noticed the music was very bland. The score is such an integral part of Star Wars. I can listen to the soundtrack of A New Hope and visualize every part of that movie. Even the prequels had stand out moments in the score (I left Phantom Menace humming the theme from Darth Maul battle). Heck.. even the Clone Wars cartoon emphasized the music more than this film did. That was a glaring weakness of the movie.

I was cool with the plot hitting familiar beats. They put enough twists on it that it didn't feel like a complete retread. While I appreciated the fan service moments it was a little over done at moments with the plain site, almost in your face, easter eggs. I was a little disappointed in the end of the film. As many have noted the "awakening" moment felt like it came out of no where. Also, the last scene felt tacked on like, "oh yeah, we need to squeeze this in before the credits".

I also agreee with Valwark about R2's role. Didn't make sense at all. C3PO doesn't work as well with out R2 either.

Overall I would say I enjoyed it. Maybe my expectations were too high. I don't think it outshines any of the originals and at this point I'm not even ready to put it above Revenge of the Sith (Its been awhile since I've seen that one but I remember being more satisfied leaving the theatre after first viewing).

***On a side note: If you live in the Tr-Cities the new Marquee Cinema in Bristol is legit. It was my first trip there. They have a knock off version IMAX called MXC. 71 foot screen and electric reclining chairs. Oh and RESERVED SEATING. No pressure to be there super early to get good seats (We got to sit smack dab in the middle of the theatre). It even puts Turkey Creek to shame. It will be my go to place for big event movies like this from now on.

I think Kylo probably hasn't had much training with a light saber since he was younger and betrayed Luke. He probably also hasn't had anyone to duel with. At the end, Snoke says go get Kylo so I finish his training.

His Force powers seem to be where his strengths lie, anyways - there have been numerous Jedi/Sith that were better with one or the other.

As for Rey turning on a light switch and being badass? I assume she is the reason the Force Awakens is the subtitle. She probably had training as a youngling before Luke split and doesn't remember it. She also seems to have fended for herself with her stick, so she's probably good with melee weapons anyways.

When Kylo was attempting to interrogate her, he mentioned seeing an ocean and an island in her thoughts (where Luke ended up being). I think she's much more powerful and knows a whole lot more than she realizes. I think she and Kylo will end up being badasses soon enough.

Andthey probably left Luke for the end for Episode 8 hype.

Can we stop spoiler tags? At this point the discussion has already changed from spoiler free first impressions to full on discussion. Anyone checking the thread at this point should be aware that things are going to slip.

All in favor?

You need to go watch 3 again...

The cringe is real. "Anakin, you're breaking my heart!" "Don't make me kill you!" just the acting and dialogue was all around terrible. Oh and "Noooooooooooooooooo!" by Vader 😣 and Jar Jar was in that movie... Did I mention Hayden Christensen was terrible?

I agree. The consensus is that Episode 3 is the "good one" but only really compared to the other prequels, plus I'm not sure it's really better than Ep 1, because I thought Episode 1 is ok if you can ignore Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd. Episode 3 is still pretty bad thanks to the horrible dialogue.

Yeah, it was only good because 1&2 were so bad, but there are times in 1 that I enjoyed more. The Anti-Cheese edits on YouTube make the prequels more tolerable.

I will catch flak for this, but I think that outside the OT, The Phantom Menace is still the one that feels the most like a Star Wars movie. Yes, it is bad, but I think it's got something to do with the cameras they used, some of the camera shots, the score, and the fact that they tried something different with the designs. I think Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon might have something to do with it as well. Everything since then has just rehashed the OT designs, rather than do something different which was what the spirit of Star Wars was all about in the first place. Particularly when you look at the designs of A New Hope and Empire (X-wings, Tie Fighters, Imperial Walkers, etc).

Also, as I think about it, I have to agree with burnt. I'm not sure I'm ready to rank The Force Awakens above Sith. It does have some bad dialogue and acting, but I can actually look past that as I enjoyed the story more. I do know this tho: I don't really have a desire to see The Force Awakens again anytime soon, which is something I couldn't say for any Star Wars movie after it came out.

wouldn't be shocked if the family he was taken from as an infant was closely related to Mace Windu

It was pretty clear Kylo has a grand-daddy complex when he and Ren were force mind battling and she pulled out his fear of never being as powerful as Vader was. That, and the creepy shrine he has with Vader's skull and helmet.

It this Kylo wearing a mask is the outward manifestation of him desperately wanting to be like his grandfather.

I won't give you too much flak, because as much as I liked TFA and it's getting so much praise, I also remember TPM got tons of praise and the majority really liked it right after it came out. It wasn't until a good 6 months to a year after that the opinion seemed to change. It will be interesting to see how much the love for the movie is by next summer or so.

Having said that, I walked out of TPM and thought it was ok but I hated Binks and Anakin right out of the gate. AOTC I didn't like almost immediately, and ROTS I did like leaving the theater. TFA I liked immediately after more than all 3 of the prequels combined.

It's not perfect by any means, and I definitely don't agree with some of the hype that it might get a Best Picture nomination (it certainly doesn't deserve that).

No way does it deserve any Academy noms outside of FX.

I honestly think Episode VIII is going to enhance TFA, whereas Attack of the Clones made everyone see that the prequels in general were not telling a very good story. By that I mean we will see Episode VIII, then parts of TFA will make more sense.

I have almost zero complaints with TFA, and I am a notoriously harsh movie critic among those that know me. My expectations were through the roof, and they were met on every level.
