Star Wars: Episode VII (December 18, 2015) ***SPOILERS***

This all day.

Unless you want to make the argument that Avatar is one of the best movies of all time, then A New Hope was clearly littered with accolades mostly because of how groundbreaking it was. Sorry The Force Awakens came out in the same era as some of the most visually stunning films of all time.

I love ANH. It's terrific. But stack up ANH and TFA side by side right now, and show them to someone who has seen neither. Even if you juiced up ANH with today's special effects, it's not as good of a movie as TFA.

1. Empire
2. Force Awakens
3. A New Hope

Yeah, I completely disagree with that last sentence. It was a different movie for a different time but that doesn't make it worse. To each their own though.

Also, I actually did that. A guy at work had never seen any Star Wars movie ever and I had him watch ANH, ESB, and ROTJ immediately before seeing TFA and he told me he liked ANH, ESB, TFA, and ROTJ in that order. Just fwiw.

Nobody is comparing Avatar, Titanic, etc to Star Wars or The Force Awakens. That has nothing to do with it. Stop using strawman arguments.

And, yes, people did bash Star Wars to defend The Force Awakens, calling the acting "hammy" and the dialogue bad among other things. Not to mention trying to discredit it by using the weak "nostalgia" excuse.

They're not, but you're using Oscar accolades as a reason why one movie is better than another. So I'm using Oscar WINS to show that Oscar wins or nominations mean nothing because it is impossible to measure the better movie beyond opinion and personal preference. You like ANH better. And I'm totally okay with that.

It speaks volumes that you keep mentioning effects (which is irrelevant), and neglect the story and characters. If you're saying that Rey, Finn, and Kylo drew you in the same way Luke, Han, Leia, Kenobi, and Vader do, then you probably need to go back to crying to Twilight movies.

It is when its essentially the same movie. Comparing The Force Awakens and Titanic, or The Force Awakens and Annie Hall or Avatar is rubbish and a waste of time.

They were surprisingly compelling characters, especially considering lots of things seemed to be being saved for later movies...but yeah, I think ANH wins this particular matchup. Vader and Solo's presence is especially noteworthy imo.

I had the librarian from my school and her daughter watch them all 1-6 before we went to see 7 on opening night. They rank them 5, 7, 4, 6, 3, 2, and 1 and 6, 7, 5, 4, 3, 1, and 2 (because the Ewoks are adorable). I don't understand why people are getting upset at conflicting opinions lol (not you)

I wrestle with this so often. I usually rank them in two categories "How good are they quality wise" and "how much do I enjoy watching them" because while I appreciate that ESB is probably the most quality Star Wars movie, I don't enjoy watching it nearly as much as I do, say, A New Hope.

I definitely see that. ESB is just a damn quality movie, but it probably isn't as "fun" as Jedi is to many people.

If people wanna bash me for my opinion, I'm gonna throw this out there and make it easy for you:

Right now, I enjoy watching Revenge of the Sith more than any other Star Wars movie. Not because I think it is the best, but because it's the freshest of the 6, is dramatic, and quickly paced.

Yeah, now that I have watched them all 40+ times, Empire is just slow as hell.

I feel the same with parts of ANH. The pacing is a little slow, but having seen it 40+, I guess that is to be expected. I just love how the Empire ends. I like it when the bad guys win. That's why I was surprised with how much I enjoyed TFA. I had zero expectations and it was a "fun" movie. I typically am very critical of those types of movies.

Im with you. ROTS is a better movie than people want to give it credit for. It just gets lumped in with the other two. It's right there with ROTJ and TFA imo.

That's cool. Sith had its moments, for sure. Anakin turned to the Dark Side a little too abruptly for my tastes, but it was my favorite of the prequels like many others around here, I'm sure.

That is actually my biggest complaint about the movie. I can tolerate bad dialogue and acting a little bit more than others, but to me it felt like it was like:

"Be my apprentice."

"OK!"

Anakin was in distress and didn't know where to turn for the answer to save his wife...he would have listened to pretty much anyone and Palpatine gave him the solution. This doesn't bother me really.

Oh I get the reason for his decision. I just thought the particular scene itself played out a little too quickly with not enough turmoil in his decision. The scene, like much of the prequels, works better as a silent movie with just music. And sound fx, cause Star Wars sound fx always kick ass.

The two people that these would struggle to replace more than anyone? John Williams and Ben Burtt.

Nobody is bashing ANH. I think everyone here loves it. Some of us just don't think it is better than Episode 7. I rank it 2nd with TFA or maybe slightly behind at 3rd. Blasphemy? Maybe, but who cares? It's just an opinion about a movie.

And Titanic and Ben Hur and The Return of the King won 11 Oscars. Does that make them the top 3 movies of all time? I sure as hell hope not.

Whoa dude whoa. Let's not go getting all crazy. RotK is a great movie. It also differed from the books the most out of the movies but was still great.

I do tend to agree with you. For me I go:
ESB
ANH/TFA
ROTJ
ROTS
AOTC
TPM

That's just my opinion. I know others will differ and I have no problem with that. I throughly enjoyed every minute of TFA. I have my gripes with it but it's still a great movie and tied for my second favorite.

Yeah, Return of the King is a great movie lol RotK, Harry Potter Deathly Hallows 2, and TFA are the the only movies I've watched 5+ times in theaters.

Your rankings are the same as mine except I give TPM the edge for having Liam Neeson and Darth Maul.

Darth Maul, Liam Neeson and Ewan Mcgregor were really the only bright spots in that movie. But Darth Maul could've been sooo much more.

I've actually watched TPM a couple of times with my kids recently. It's not as bad as I remember. The pace is actually quite good up until they arrive on Corscant. Then there is a lull where my kids zone out and we end up turning it off. LOL.

The kids (4.5 and 3) love Quigon and Obiwan. They like kid Anakin a lot too because they are kids and relate to him I'm sure. The pod race is just a fun scene too. They are pretty indifferent to Jar Jar although they like the part where Quigon catches his tongue at the dinner table.

Looking back, the Jedi Council is a bunch of pricks. They could barely be bothered with meeting thIs slave boy Quigon rescued. Mace Windu even rolls his eyes. No wonder Anakin turned to the Dark Side.

As much flack as Lucas takes for the prequels he did try to be original.
