Star Wars vs Star Trek

Do you really want to go into sexual exploits of star wars actors?

Nobody said anything about what the guy does behind closed doors but an old man dancing like that and putting it on the internet is embarrassing.

Most people that know who George Takei is knows that he's gay and I'm willing to bet that most people don't care.

One of the big things to remember is that ST is basically a bunch of vignettes using the same setting. Other than the main characters and some ongoing elements (Klingons, Romulans, etc) one episode of ST was basically unto itself.

SW OTOH was basically one big storyline almost entirely focused around a specific bloodline. More than a few think SW is very nearly a case of throwing Dune and LOTR in a blender and adding some cutting edge special effects. Not that there's anything wrong with that per se, SW is some entertaining fare to be sure, but IMO SW is good not because of some great story but in the onscreen telling. For instance, at least IMHO, if you were to put SW in a book I'd put it behind Dune and well behind Tolkein's work. (I put LOTR ahead of SW onscreen too but that sort of thing is almost blonde's vs brunettes...some people just have preferences)

Not to mention, LotR had nearly 2 decades of technology advantage in the special effects department.

But this is about SW vs. ST

And SW >>>>>> ST

You have Star Destroyers, Death Stars, Sun Crushers, etc etc. Trust me, I'd take the Galactic Empire in a fight against all the combined powers in the Star Trek universe.

did any of the Star Wars ships have the cloaking mechanism?

I love the original tv series

I love the next generation.

I loved movies wrath of khan and undiscovered country ALOT

rest of the stuff was total crap though.

Wrath of Khan, IMHO, is the best original cast movie. First Contact is the best NG movie. I can't believe you didn't like Deep Space Nine or Voyager as both were quality series.

why even compare the two? Different universes, different visions of the path that mankind has taken in discovering his place in the universe.

Star Wars is the idyllic struggle between good and evil and is more like a fairy tale. It's overarching story line is the redemption of a young boy's father.

Star Trek is all about overcoming the messiness of human history and the line that separates good and evil is a lot more blurred.

I love them both, equally.

and, Firefly does indeed rock.

This. A better debate would be Star Wars vs Dune.

The comparison exists because of the word "Star" in their name, that's about it for me. Two different geekdoms that I enjoy but the extremes of the fans scare me in both. I prefer Trek as a whole.

For SW, I enjoy Empire Strikes Back significantly more than anything else in the series but can find it in me to find mild enjoyment from any of them except Episodes I & II.

For ST, I enjoy the Original Series, TNG, and DS9 but cannot stomach much of Voyager or Enterprise. IMO, Star Trek II, IV, VI and First Contact are always going to be the best of the bunch with everything else being pretty "meh" and Insurrection being downright unwatchable for me.

I was pleasantly surprised by the reboot when I finally gave it a chance; two months before the release I just knew I'd hate it.

I personally like them both, but for argument's sake I'll say I like Star Trek more. Don't get me wrong, Star Wars is great (well, at least the original three) and it was one of the first science fiction stories I ever was interested in. My take on Star Trek is that it's fun because people can relate to it a little more. It's about the human race and the future of space exploration of our galaxy. People like the optimism about where humanity ends up in the future. Star Wars is just an entertaining scifi/fantasy story that isn't based in any kind of reality. Each one has its enduring qualities. Star Trek catches a lot of heat because of the cheesiness of the television series. If Star Wars didn't come out as a movie and was made into a television show first, just imagine the kind of awful special effects and cheesy dialogue that would have come out of that. Surprisingly, the original series is one of my least favorite Star Trek series. Don't get me wrong, I like Capt. Kirk and Spock and the movies they made based on the original series are where it's at, but I find myself watching more TNG DS9 and Voyager on Netflix, and Voyager is scraping the bottom of the barrel. I don't think I've even watched one episode from the original series. That and Enterprise. Wasn't interested in Enterprise either.
