Stephanie Mavunga

No.....I'm a UT fan, but this is just off.

2015:
PG-Reynolds vs Session....draw at best for UT. Reynolds has potential to be a really good guard, but she wasn't strong offensively. Solid player though. Sessions also wasn't strong offensively but was outstanding as a defender. I'd say slight edge USC.

SG-Carter vs Mitchell....BIG edge to USC. Tiffany Mitchell is a 2x SEC POY and legit 1st Team All-American. She is an efficient scorer and can beat you off the dribble or score from the outside. She also distributes the ball and plays solid D. Carter is outstanding defensively but has struggled offensively as a role player for UT. Huge edge USC.

SF-Diamond vs Dozier...big edge to Tennessee. Diamond is one of the most dynamic players in the nation and should contend for SEC POY from day 1. Dozier is a streaky shooter who can be a big weapon, but isn't in the same playing field as Diamond.
PF-Graves vs Wilson...edge USC. Graves has shown moments of being a great player at Tennessee, but A'ja's upside and skill set right now surpasses Graves.
C-Russell vs Coates...edge USC, but this could change. Coates has been rock solid her first 2 years at South Carolina. Big physical post who finishes well inside, draws fouls, and is an exceptional rebounder. I would look for Russell to surpass Coates provided she is healthy and lives up to her billing as the top recruit from the loaded 2013 class, but, from what we've seen so far, you can't rank her ahead of Coates.

Benches:
Cooper, Middleton, Jones, Nared, Moore vs. White, Imovbioh, Cuevas, Roy, Colley.....edge USC.

Imovbioh could very well start alongside Coates and push Wilson to the 3, giving USC a devastatingly big lineup. Imovbioh was outstanding at Virginia and should slide in nicely to the post rotation. Cuevas is streaky, we'll see how she's improved. Roy is a great 'glue' player. Smart player, good but not great shooter, you don't lose anything with her on the court. Colley is an incoming freshman who is on the Canadian National Team. Kia Nurse and Natalie Achonwa were both National Team members in college and went on to find success collegiately. I don't know how good Colley is, but I wouldn't count her out as being an outstanding player.

Tennessee's bench is solid and better than last year's. Nared and Jones will be big weapons, how well Cooper adjusts to the college game should be a key point, and Middleton needs to have a better sophomore campaign. The only way I see Tennessee being a better team than USC this year is if Diamond has a POY caliber season (which could happen), and if Russell lives up to her billing, stays healthy, and can consistently put up 15/10. South Carolina has so much depth in the post and one of the best guards on the perimeter, along with a slew of heady guards which will make them very difficult to contend with.

Looking at 2017, this is where it should be more interesting--especially if Mavunga picks UT:
2016
PG-Reynolds/Cooper vs Cuevas/Colley....Lots of unknowns, but my guess is slight edge Tennessee if Cooper is as good as advertised and we see improvement from Reynolds. Cuevas is streaky but I don't see her as someone who will do well adjusting to a more organized offense which is why I think Colley will beat her out.

SG-Carter vs Davis...edge USC. Davis could be lethal with good players around her
SF-Diamond vs Gray...edge Tennessee, although Gray is very very good.
PF-Steph vs Wilson...even, or slight edge USC. Both are fantastic players, but I think Wilson will improve more by 2016-17 than Mavunga will. Right now I'd say edge Mavunga. Landing Mavunga elevates Tennesee from legit Final Four threat to title threat.
C-Russell vs Coates....I'd say slight edge UT by 2016-17 IF Russell stays healthy and develops as a center.

Bench: I wont break it down too much, but probably slight edge Tennessee unless USC lands some top 2016 recruits. Come 2016-17, both teams will be STACKED.

I agree with most of your assessment but I think Carter defense would make it hard for Mitchell like it did for her last season and the X factor is Jasmine she can guard the 1 thru 5 spot and there is no player on either team as athletic as her. You also are leaving out MeMe Jackson who doesn't get the credit she deserves but she is a baller. I am not taking anything from Mitchell and I feel if USC plays Wilson at the 3 it hurts them, she will have a hard time defending Diamond who will no doubt play the 3 this season and possibly slide to more of the two next season. Also having seen most of these girls play in person on the AAU circuit (my sister will be a junior playing at Division 2 Millersville) I am very familiar with them and how they play. Not saying that means a lot. Wilson is good don't get me wrong but most of her hype has been because she's a 6'5" player who doesn't want to play post and can handle the ball a little bit, the only time she saw competition was on the AAU circuit and she was successful because she was able to pull the post defenders away from the basket but if she has to guard the post she struggles. So a big body like Steph is going to hurt her because she doesn't really wanna "bang" and is more of a finesse player. You bump her around a little bit and you get in her head mentally but we will see.

Since she will be on the USA team that starts practice soon, it may have been the only time she had. Since she will sit out a year, the summer school is not that important. Sure hope she comes to Tennessee.

Forgot Jackson--I'm excited to see how she does this year. I agree it's in USC's best interest to keep Wilson in the post. Wilson has a lot of hype about her because of her size and said skill set. From what I've seen, she is a classic 4 and should stay a power forward. She doesn't have the ball handling, quickness, passing ability or shooting ability to play on the perimeter. She does have a good face up game, rebounds well, can finish inside and has a good frame for a power forward. She can finish with contact, draws fouls and is capable of hitting open high post jumpers. That said, with so much post talent on USC's bench, I wouldn't be surprised to see Dawn put Wilson on the perimeter and see how it goes. I think she is better suited as a 4, but we've only seen her there at SC so she could prove me wrong and develop into a great 3.

Wilson is an outstanding player and should develop into an All-American at SC, but she isn't a true game changer as a top recruit like Stewart, Parker, Moore, Griner, Delle Donne, etc. were. I think she could develop and impact wise, be as good as the Ogwumike sisters, but going forward, if USC is going to win a title in 2017 or 2018 (I'm sorry--but I don't see anyone touching UCONN this year), I think we'll see Gray/Davis making the big plays to get SC there rather than Wilson.

Last season we won the perimeter scoring in both games. Reynolds and Carter matched Sessions and Mitchell in both games 20 to 18 in game one and 24 to 29 in game two. Massengale scored some points that gave us the edge in perimeter scoring. The difference in both games was offensive rebounding as we didn't have a center in either game and Welch and Ibiam lived on putbacks. Both of those players are gone and although Wilson is a great offensive player she is a little soft when it comes to rebounding and getting physical in the paint. We all have our opinions and I think the teams are about dead even in 2016. I can't really consider 2017 as we don't know who we have joining the team and they will probably have a couple players coming in as well.

In 2016 I view it like this:

Point guard Reynolds and Copper vs Cuevas and Sessions Tennessee has the edge. Plus 7. They couldn't guard Reynolds how they going to guard Cooper?
Two Guard Carter and Jackson vs. Mitchell has edge for them. plus 10 for Mitchell
Center Russell vs Coates. I think this will be a good battle calling it even. They lose if the can't outscore Russel at the center position.
Wing Forward Diamond versus Wilson or Dozier plus 7 Tennessee. This is a spot they are going to find tough to guard. Wilson would have her hands full trying to guard Diamond and so will Dozier or anyone else on their roster in 2016.
Power Forward Graves vs Wilson or Imovioh. plus 2 SC even though Graves outscored Wilson last season and it wasn't that close. Wilson should be better. Imovioh could be able to take one of the two major players place that left. She will have to for them to win.

So the starting five is dead even. I think our bench is better in 2016. They won both games because we played without a center last season. Their edge inside was like 10 points in the first game and 20 in the second. If we resolve the rebounding difference and keep in mind their major two physical players are gone I think the home team wins. Neutral court games could go either way.

How is it a fact? I haven't seen any proof from either camps or a credible media source. Only fans claiming to be insiders & repeating what someone else supposedly told someone else-hearsay

Also, I'd never "get pissy" about not getting any info first. It's not that serious, I have a real actual life

You seeing 'proof' does not distinguish a fact from a non-fact. Either something happened or it didn't. There is no in-between. Your peace of mind doesn't change that. The world doesn't revolve around you.

'Slight edge' my rear end. If Cooper is as good as advertised it would be HUGE edge to UT and it wouldn't be close. SC's glaring weakness over the next few seasons will be lack of a PG.

The thread has got off-track, folks. Start a UT vs. usc thread is you want to keep on....

Mavunga is now likely to wait until after USAB to make a decision. This is good for TN.

Still think it's OSU, but TN does have a chance.

I like this at first it seemed like you was for certain to pick Ohio State or Kentucky so to see that we do have a "chance" that's all I can ask for, now would she possibly be playing against with or against or being coached by any other lady vols (not sure which team she is currently on this summer) that could further help us in our recruitment of her?

She's on the PanAm team (no Lady Vols), but also no Buckeyes either.

Linnae Harper from KY is on the team, and a lot of USC players, so there may be some anti-TN recruiting, but these players grew up together, and if she doesn't go to their school, most of them want each other to be happy.

Of course i hope she lands at UT but she could do a lot worse than Ohio St. McGuff is one of the rising young coaches in the game--I expect him to have them competing right up there with Maryland in the Big Ten soon. He's already had a noticeable impact on recruiting in Ohio--effectively closing the border on elite talent. As I'm sure MTSU can tell you, I wasn't surprised when Mitchell filled one of his assistant vacancies with a coach from Dayton this offseason. UK previously had pretty good success in Ohio but its getting significantly more difficult with a competent coach at OSU.

If she wants to compete for FFs and NCs she will come to UT. UT would still be better than either of those teams should she go to either school. She also, ironically, has a chance to fulfill the original plan of her and Mercedes playing in college together.

Even with Diamond, she would be more of a focal point at UT than she would at UK or OSU. Mitchell is MUCH more of a ballhog than Diamond could ever dream of being -- going to be interesting to see how Calhoun fits in -- and UK has no idea how to incorporate guards into that hot mess of an offense that makes our offense look like magic.

I totally agree with your post. I am curious to know as to why her parents want her at OSU. You are definitely right when you say Kentucky's offense makes our offense looks like magic. Kentucky is all about guard play and I have no idea why any elite post would want to be apart of that chaos. Whereas at Tennessee, the focal point of the offense is to feed the ball to the post players. Maybe she will revisit Tennessee after her commitment with USA Basketball.

All these insiders, who claim to know something, I have seen for years, and they are wrong at least 50% of the time. point is they are just reading what all the other boards are saying. As far as a 2013 transfer, there are no insiders outside her head and family, and these I think she is leading, and she has been blocked by types are just spotting their own spin to look knowledgeable; they have no idea. She came to TN, she very well may have had meet up with Holly, Dean, and who knows at her home, or somewhere else in the last few weeks. She may have meet with Dean here, and we just don't know he was in town, or flew in. Point is, she hasn't made an announcement and she visited TN, they all told us, it wasn't going to happen. Fool me once... Welcome aboard when she is ready.I promise you, none of them are as insider as they pretend to be, and THAT I do know.

No doubt she liked Tennessee. If she goes to Ohio State probably because of the distance from her hometown only 197 miles. Tennessee is 376 which is twice as far.

^She just spent 2 years in Chapel Hill, NC--certainly not a stone's throw from home.

Is separation anxiety all of a sudden an issue?

Wow lots of love for players who haven't really had the chance to prove themselves yet, like Russell and Cooper. To give Russell the edge over any USC starting post player shows heavy bias. Cuevas was pretty impressive in her freshman year too. If she can slow the game down and play under control she could be lethal. Cooper has a high ceiling too, but let's be honest they both do.

I think both teams will be very good in 2015 and 2016. Both should be top 4 teams pretty easily. However you cite that we will have difficulty with team chemistry after adding Davis and Gray but Tennessee won't after adding 2 high profile players in Diamond and Mavunga (if she signs)?

Anyways, it's going to be a hell of a matchup between UT and USC over the next couple years. Looking forward to it.

LMFAO. Don't be a homer.

Cuevas' ceiling is not within miles of Cooper's. She can't shoot, she can't pass, and she can't defend. And she plays like her hair is on fire for no apparent reason. If you think Cuevas is even near Cooper's league, then you aren't even intelligent enough to be worthy of the time it took to type this response.

Being honest, i seen some flashes of Cuevas that were pretty good. I will wait until the season begins to make a statement on Cuevas vs Cooper. I do think Cooper will be pretty good tho.

Lol you've never even seen Cooper play. Cuevas had a couple of 20 pt games against decent SEC competition on the road as a backup. She plays a little wild but you can't deny her talent. Do I think Cooper was the better overall prospect? Yes. But that's about it.

she will have to sit out an entire academic year, but that doesn't mean she has to attend summer school. She has commitments to other basketball, and won't, most likely choose a school until afterwards. I believe she will announce and enroll in a school in time prior to Fall classes. Any team would be fine with that. I do think she will visit us again with Holly here, or somewhere with the coaches, if she is seriously considering us to attend. I have no information but early August seems about right to me. At this point, no news is hugely favorable to Lady Vols!
