Still have faith in Cuonzo Martin?

He should make the tourney.
Beyond that, I see a very average coach.
Not the player developer I thought he would be.
Needs a couple seasons of Kevin Whitted on staff.

Get Barton and I think skies the limit. I honestly think we can be a top 15 team. Without Barton, I think we are a bubble team once again.

Still a ton of confidence. Lost some but still believe he can take UT to great heights. He should have made the tourney. They deserved it over several teams based on their resume.

They'll be a top 25 team next year. They'll drop off a little bit after that. Then, that's when UT gets to a top 20 program.

I'm not convinced there's gonna be this massive drop off after next year like many think. For the sake of argument we will say stokes stays, the 14 draft is gonna be loaded, so it seems possible.

Tennessee will return:

Thompson
Hubbs
Richardson
Davis
Stokes
Moore
Q
Reese
Ndiaye

They will bring in 4* wing Jordan Cornish, that's a definite. 4* forward Philip Cofer seems very likely, so I'll add him. I will stop there, but obviously impact guys like Lyle, Lindsey etc are still out there.

So rotation could be:

Thompson
Hubbs/ Cornish
Richardson/ Moore
Davis/ Cofer
Stokes

That's not some scrub team, or overly young team like Vanderbilt was last year. That's a team capable of being a bubble team IMO, and if you add a guy like Lyle he instantly makes that a tourney team. Now I agree there's a chance it could be a big drop off, stokes goes, Cornish is our best recruit and the others are 2*...but I think we will reload with the 2014 class nicely.

I agree with your premise but I don't see any way that stokes returns. He was so close to going this year with zero shot of getting drafted.

I think the 2014-15 season hinges on the quality of bigs we sign in this class.

But he ended up listening to people and said he didn't wanna go if he wasn't gonna be drafted. So if he gets told the same I would think he'd return. I agree though, we need some bigs. A JUCO big who's ready physically would be nice.

So you're concerned about recruiting for next year, 2014, correct? If so, what positions do you think will be the thinnest in '14?

No, I'm concerned with what we'll have left over for 2014 and going forward. We've already lost Golden. Next year we'll lose Maymon and we'll probably lose Stokes. I hope Hubbs isn't a one and done or we'll really struggle in 2014.

I'm a wait and see guy and don't try and guess at how a player is going to pan out based on how many stars he has. Richardson will be here all 4 years. He's a good 4 year player that UT needs more of lately. We haven't been able to recruit a decent PG in years. Once we lose our beef inside then I have concerns with what type of team we're going to field.

I like how everyone is basing their assumption off Tennessee and Cuonzo. What about the expectations of the other teams in the SEC? Florida is looking good right? I bet KY is pretty pissed. Probably Mizzou? Who else?

I'm saying that we need to be in the top 4 of SEC to guarantee a spot. Drop down to 5 or 6, I think we are a bubble for sure.

I get optimism and all, but what on Earth has he done to deserve "a ton" of confidence?

2011–2012 Tennessee 19–15 10–6 T–2nd NIT 2nd Round
2012–2013 Tennessee 20–13 11–7 T–5th NIT 1st Round

His coaching record at Tennessee: Overall (39–28)
SEC Play (21–13)

A pretty average record so far, Tennessee is a team that should be in the tournament every year. Do you have faith that Cuonzo will get it done next year?

I think Martin has been solid. Not great, but solid.

My confidence in him has decreased some, but despite losing Golden I think he has enough to take this team to the NCAA tourney this coming season.

I agree. There are obviously some huge questions about CM's fourth year and I share some of the same worries about the long term future. We're years away from being regarded as a top team that makes a run in the tourney every year.

OTOH, a solid season this year and a solid recruiting class next year would help tremendously and it's not out of the realm of possibilities, IMO.

We probably have the second best talent in the league behind UK. Florida is close, but they lost three contributing seniors. Missouri has Frank Haith. They also lost several big players. The only other two teams that could surprise are Arkansas and LSU. Both are adding good classes to already decent teams. Everyone else is behind IMO.

Just a reminder... Bruce Pearls first year of coaching. Look at that roster. Names I totally forgot about! And we made the dance.

I'm having a hard time believing CCM is a great coach/motivator. BP took underdogs into superstars. Dane Bradshaw?! Jordan Howell! ,

If you think motivation is the problem, then we are not watching the same team. It is clear the effort is there. It is all about execution, especially on the offensive end. If we play at least average offense in two games, then we make the dance. He has to get us playing better earlier in the season.
