I'd say DC is and always has been chocked to the gills with Ivy League connections. Apparently it doesn't matter if the kids learned anything - they just need daddy's connections and that piece of paper - look at the Kennedy's.

When you get through pondering that one, explain flowers. Expensive - very expensive weeds put in an over priced jug of some kind, and they will be dead in a week. You could actually have spent the money for something worthwhile, but those damn flowers ... Forty eight years of marriage this year, and I still don't get that one.

I saw today that they are now targeting Tom Brokaw. I guess in a way it doesn't surprise me - empowered people tend to take liberties. In the end we've got a lot of people right now who jump on causes and make Joe McCarthy look like a rank amateur. The new McCarthyism just has different targets - generally US males - white if possible.

Peer pressure, plus they are a symbol of love, at least according to florists. In my flower shop, when the Valentine's deliveries started hitting the offices, the men in the office would realize it was Valentine's Day, and here would come more orders.

Let's say Valentine's was on Wed. A lot of the orders are delivered a day or two before, in order to meet the demand. No way to deliver all of them on the day. So, the women who didn't get flowers on Mon or Tues would tell their guy on that night that Miss X got flowers today. Peer pressure.

I'd rather spend the money (and more) on something that will be around in a week. It's the attraction women have for flowers that is beyond my comprehension. I guess just something you accept. So I buy flowers thinking how stupid it is, but knowing they work. A little hint, though, to anybody unattached, do not get married around Christmas, Valentines, or any other flower holiday.

Most florists won't touch a wedding on Valentine or Mother's Day. Too busy already, plus flowers are expensive on holidays. FYI, it's not the retailer's fault. We just got our increased cost of flowers, which meant we worked on a lower percentage markup.

Getting married around Christmas is great. The church is already decorated so you save money on that. Whole Foods has two dozen roses for $20 on Valentine's day, easy way to save your pennies.

I know, and not blaming florists themselves; I'm just saying from experience to factor in flower holidays when you make wedding plans, and you won't begin too hate anniversaries - and we weren't that close to Christmas itself. December isn't good for travel either, but almost 50 years ago it wasn't nearly as big an issue.

True story, as I am a hopeless romantic. I buy wife flowers all the time, though these days I frequently get her a potted plant, or flowers to be planted in the yard etc...she like them better because they last.

My wife fussed at me once for spending too much money on flowers when i used to get her the bouquet kind... so i pulled over on hwy 321 in the spring and from the center median and the other side of the road I put together a bouquet as beautiful as anything I have ever bought her. Took the time to inspect for any bugs, cut them all to length witj my knife, and include greenery to really make them look nice
There were 3 or 4 different distinct colors and 2 species in memory serves.

Found out later this is illegal, but I noticed the other day some really nice ones are in bloom off of i85, and I intend to do it again. She asked how i managed to get such beautiful flowers for free...so I told her what i did.

To this day, she says thats the sweetest thing I have ever done for her witj flowers, and tells her friends about it if flowers come up. Got lots of points for that one.

We were newly married with a baby on the way, that's been 10 years now. I am gonna do it again soon though. Saw those pretty red ones the other day and my first thought was of her. Every time I see something truly beautiful I think of her. Don't look at other women. I am a lucky guy.
