Strong to Texas

Strong is a hell of a football coach. He'll do fine football and recruiting wise. Louisville was a mess when he arrived.

Can he handle Texas itself? We will see.

I figured Strong was waiting for the UF job next year. He doesn't seem like a good fit for TX but he would've been an even worse fit at UTK. Best of luck to him except when he coaches against Vols, Baylor, OU, TxTech, SMU, TCU, Rice or Mercer Bears.

So a great defensive coach, excellent recruiter, from the South, who knows the SEC backwards and forwards, has 4 BCS wins as DC or HC, and 2 NC rings would've been a bad fit?

Yes, we like our coaches to be active in all things UT. By all accounts i've seen. Strong isn't big on that.

Who cares if he wins?

I was answering why he wouldn't be a good fit. Assuming a good fit includes winning…as it should. His lack of hands on with things outside of football would be a reason he isn't a good fit.

For Texas it could be a problem.

But if he beats Oklahoma and wins titles he will be fine

Its not going to go well at Texas either. Boosters like to see and hear what they're paying for and not being able to show off their "importance" will be like a slap in their uppity faces. Not a good fit..imo

This is very, very true. I'm shocked at this hire. Schmoozing and politics are huge with he Texas program, many billionaire egos to appease. Very ballsy move by the AD, will be interesting to see how this plays out. If Strong doesn't win early and often it could get nasty.

Truth be told, he is exactly the guy I feared they'd get.

Lets see how he handles everything. It's a hefty job.

That was my point. We don't need someone to "sell"/promote UT football to the masses. We're a top 10-15 program all time, we need to get back to winning. Urban was an ass and very abrasive to the media, fans etc. Many of my UF friends who are alums couldn't stand Meyer the "person" but he won so all was forgiven.

I disagree! He has been on everyone's short list the last few seasons for a reason, including us making a run at him. The recruiting takes care of itself in Texas and he did make Louisville a top twenty team. I don't remember Mack Brown pulling in the best recruits when he was at North Carolina. The biggest problem for Texas is that Texas A&M has become very appealing for Texas kids since A&M joined the SEC. However, there is still plenty of talent to go around in that state. The only similar thing I see to Fulmer is that Texas has been slipping the last few years just like Tennessee the last few under Fulmer. It was time for them to get a shot of energy in their program and they hired a coach we wanted last year. Money talks!
A lot on here are bashing him and it's because he turned us down and they are bitter. Those same people would be singing his praises if he had accepted our offer but that's the nature of internet message boards. Coach or player is all world if he chooses us but is a dumb bum if he chooses someone else. It's hard for a lot of fans to look in the mirror and be honest about their team so they go after those that don't choose their team or say they never wanted them anyway.

Listen chief, I just don't think the guy is a very good head coach. And I can honestly say that I was glad when he turned us down last year. Texas is in my opinion the best job in college football and they could have done much better than Strong. I think Franklin of Vandy could out X and O him all over the place. So before you get all bowed up at me, re check the facts. Charlie (without bridgewater) doesn't win 8 games with the most pathetic schedule in the land. Texas will regret this hire, guarantee it.

I'm afraid it shows us we will never land a big name coach when he turns us down then one yr later he takes Texas job!

Do you believe that he would have turned us down if we had offered him $25 million? I don't.

$25 million and losing his stud QB to the NFL made the timing much better for him this time around. It would have only taken a couple of .500 seasons at Louisville and his window of opportunity would have closed. I'm not saying they'd have gone .500, but you never know.

BTW, Muschamp turned us down as well and took the UF job a year later. How'd that work out?

And, I'd prefer we not need to look for a coach for a while.

Problem with Texas is that the job is 50% football, 50% politics. Strong doesn't strike me as that kind of personality type, so I don't really think he fits there. He's a good football coach though and that should be enough.

Cincinnati had one of the easiest schedules last year of AQ schools.

It is interesting to think of the Texas-Florida Muschamp-Strong coaching carousel. IF Strong would have gone to UF. IF Muschamp would have stayed at Texas. Just interesting to think about it.

So, Where does Franklin go? The important thing is he IS going somewhere. PSU? Golden will most likely go there. That means Louisville and Miami come open.

Is Louisville an upgrade from Vanderbilt? Better team, worse conference. I don't see Louisville ever make it to the "playoff" round. So, does Franklin even consider Louisville?

Vanderbilt has hit it's ceiling. Franklin could go to Louisville and continue the success Strong has ushered in and as Strong did, make a jump to a better, bigger program for more $.

If I'm Franklin and Louisville comes knocking, I'd take it.

How can you discount Bridgewater, when CS recruited and his staff developed him? So we should say Fulmer was a bad coach when he didn't have PM and TM since he never won an SECCG without them? All coaches are good when they have good players. So many on here say Butch isn't bad we just have bad players, then with Strong it's, he's not good he just has good players. Well believe it or not he'll have good/great players at Texas.
