students have bought less than 7500 tix

Hard to buy football tickets against $30,000 or so in student loan debt. By the empty seats you see across college football, I would guess attendance is down across all segments most everywhere. Tennessee being a low wage state doesn't help either.

If you are enrolled in college "a student" you arent required to pay back your student loans yet. They dont start til 6 months after and then you can apply for a hardship.

If you cant pay your debt, dont take out the loans...

Kids these days, complaining about having to pay for their own debts.... Go the community college route if UTK is too expensive, instead of acting like a spoiled brat once the collectors start calling.

This only applies to direct subsidized loans. Students can't determine if they are eligible for their loans to be subsidized, as it is mainly based off of their parents' income. Students who must take out unsubsidized loans are responsible for paying interest on the loan for the entire duration of the loan.

Also, a student saying that they aren't buying football tickets because of their debt isn't them complaining or saying that they won't pay their debt. It's just being fiscally responsible and not spending money they don't have on things that aren't necessities.

How does a person who refuses to attend even a free Vols game (1) find VolNation, and (2) decide to start an account?

honestly the people who we should really be getting onto are the people that don't know what this website is

I have a hard time calling any student fiscally responsible who can't figure out a way to save $7/month. The cost is simply an excuse but not a real reason

This one is easy.
1. They don't have to leave the house or go outside.
2. It's on their flickering electronic Jesus.
3. It takes zero effort on their part to make an account.

Are students still <7500 right now? I doubt it but I still wonder what the number is.

Someone earlier said students had bought 9,000 of the 12,000 allotment.

Again, this is of a school where there is a total enrollment of ~27,000 (including graduate students).

I'm not saying that the cost is the only reason. Obviously, if somebody really cares about football, they can afford $10 per game pretty easily. I'm talking more about the people who don't care about football but who would go for the atmosphere if it were free. For those people, the $10 can be a real deterrent.

I mean, I'm not complaining about the $10. It never stopped me from coming to games when I was an undergraduate. I understand that it's a business and they're trying to make money. I'm just trying to provide a little insight as to why students aren't scrambling to come to the games.

Bunch of grown men bashing teenagers because they don't like their favorite sports team.

Here's the thing, the students who are Vols fans are going. The problem is, most the student body doesn't give a flying flip about football, let alone a losing football team like UT. They didn't come to UT for the sports or because they were fans, they came because it was their best option for college.

So, the goal is to convince around 5 thousand students who don't really care about football to fill out the rest of the student seating. The biggest issues as I see it are:

1) Paying for tickets. Now, I don't mean the 10$ price point, I mean the way the system works. Student tickets are bought like a week+ in advance. Moreover, you can't just go buy tickets. You have a couple day period to 'request' a ticket. Then you wait a couple of days at which point tickets are assigned to you and your group. You then have like a 2 day period to purchase said ticket or you lose it.

Now, you can buy another ticket by yourself if you want, but we're not talking about UT fans here, these are the people we're trying to drag along. They aren't going to attend a game by themselves. When I was attending, I cannot tell you how many times my friends would forget to buy their tickets on time, despite my reminders. It simply wasn't high on their list of things to worry about.

2) Time. Everyone talks about how it's just 4 hours, but it really isn't. Again, these are casual fans, if they are going to the game, it's for the total experience/social event. This means they are going to get up and tail gate, attend the game, eat after the game, and probably attend a post game party. A football game is an all day event. They aren't just going to the game and then going home, they don't care about the game. If a casual fan cannot devote a full day to the football day activities, they simply aren't going to go.

3) The atmosphere lately sucks (because we suck). The only real advantage to being at the game live (apart from supporting the team, which again, they don't care) is the atmosphere. However, most of our games are either blowout wins or blowout loses, and the crowd is never really into the game. This can only be fixed by winning.

There are obviously other reasons, many have been touched on elsewhere, but these are the bigs ones from my experience when I attended that haven't already been expressed.

Anyone have a number on how large the student section was in the late 90s early 2000s?

Cause, again, they're trying to fill 12,000 seats with a 27,000 enrollment. Of that, only about 21,000 are undergrad. Graduate students are a different beast because they might have gone to a different school for undergrad.

Those just aren't smart odds. I'm actually impressed they even moved 9,000 tickets. Who knows, though, maybe they get all 12,000 tickets moved.

Then we'll see how many actually show up and how loud they are.

that was during free ticket days and camping outside the ticket office in the UC and giving your ID to friends to be able to sit together. if that meant u didnt eat breakfast or lunch cause u needed ur ID for meal plan then so-be-it.

I almost missed out on a tik for one game because i went to redeem that evening they were released.

Why should I as a student, Vol fan or not, waste my hard earned $10 and four hours of my Saturday when I already know what the outcome of the game will be? Every Vols game in recent years has either been a blowout win against an inferior opponent or a blowout loss against a formidable SEC opponent. The atmosphere is boring, frankly.

Like others have said, winning changes everything. And no, I'm not talking about routing a D2 opponent with high school talent. I'm talking about actual games against formidable opponents. Only then can you criticize the student body if we don't show up.

Just to note, I'd gladly spend ten times that to travel either 3 hours west to Nashville or four hours east to Charlotte on a Sunday and watch a game in which the outcome is not a foregone conclusion.

I thought it was 12-15K while I was there. They even issued SRO's for a few games.

The full fee is $372. You have to pay the full fee to get student tickets. You automatically have to pay the full fee if you take 9 or more hours of classes, but if you take less (like myself and many other research-oriented graduate students), you have the option to pay the difference in order to get student tickets. For example, the required fee for 6 hours is $186 and the required fee for 3 hours is $93.

Ouch. People lamenting poor students should consider what a pittance $10 is compared to the cost of attending UT. I know there's a difference between cash expenses and ones you can get financial aid for, but still.

I some how found a way to stay an extra semester because I wanted to have one more season before I went back home to the pit of college football that is UNC, State and Duke. I also went to 3 away games that 2006 season. These kids can get hammered any day of the year in their dorm room, apartment, Tin Roof or whatever, but there are only 28 + games they will attend as a student at Neyland Stadium and they can drink there too. I only got busted once going in with liquor. I wish they would realize how special it is to attend these games no matter what our situation is, because it goes by way too damn quick.

Back in 2006 it was still special. These poor kids haven't seen a decent win at UT. If they were around in '09 they could have gone to the USC game.

It's just not that "special" of an experience for these kids. They don't have nostalgia to look back on. All they have is the recent reality.

I was there in 1985 for the Vandy game which, believe it or not, was Standing Room Only. Imagine a 30-0 pasting over a perennial doormat mat to UT in an electric environment.

Student should have the first pick of student section tickets until 2 weeks before games. Then, these tickets should be made available to the public. JMO.

I'm probably in the minority but one of the main reasons I went to UT was to attend sporting events. There were a bunch of schools that I was looking at that were all comparable academically but the chance to watch UT football games for 4 years put it over the top.

I went to high school in the St. Louis area and didn't know anyone on campus when I got there and attending football/basketball games is where I made most of my friends. Fell in love with the University and by my Sophomore year I had opened a savings account to save money for season tickets when I graduated.

/end back in my day rant

I was there as well. It was jam-packed because if UT won they went to the Sugar Bowl. I don't think anyone left early. It was awesome.
