Sunseri... talk about an anticlimactic hire.

Can you please tell us what qualifies you to judge whether or not this is a home run hire?

Who would be a home run hire IYO?

Nothing "qualifies" me to judge whether it's a home run hire or not. It's my opinion. However it is worth noting that it appears the general consensus is that this would not be a "homerun" hire. Please also realize that I never said it would be a bad hire... just not the hire that would excite the base. Come Feb 2nd, it could be viewed much differently.

The home run hire (within the realm of reality), IMO would be Shannon.

BTW, I appreciate the engaging conversation you offer. It is a welcome sight to see that not all volnation posters post mindless drivel within a thread that offers a different POV than their own. I wish they would follow your example and try to construct a meaningful sentence or two (okay that might be asking too much) that expresses their opinion in a non hostile manner. Again, asking waaaay too much, I know... name calling, random posts and poor attempts at humor is much easier and requires way less mental involvement than actually adding to the conversation.

Of course you did. Like I said the other day on this site. No matter who DD hires, his slurpers will proclaim it a GREAT hire and just what the program needed.

And the haters will hate even if he wins 10 games next year. Some poeple just love to be miserable.

A baseball analogy if I may. With 1 out, bottom of the ninth, runner in scoring postition firmly on second base, Dooley steps to the plate and hits a sac fly to advance the runner to third. The bad news is we needed a single to the outfield which could have scored the runner on second to win the game. The good news is there's still one out with Sunseri coming to the plate...

Will Sunseri pan out, maybe... maybe not. But one thing is for sure, it's certainly far from the homerun hire this fan base and recruiting class needed. Dooley had an opportunity to invoke excitement back into the program and fanbase with the hire of a PROVEN DC. Instead we're once again hiring (for whatever reason, money, lack of interest due to the one-and-done likelihood of Dooley's tenure) a "lotsa potential" guy. How'd that work out for Fulmer when he hired Clawson? Insanity.

As a side bonus, with this hire he's managed to piss off one of the program most loyal coaches and proven recruiters (Lance Thompson).

The dumpster fire that is the current state of our football program sadly.... blazes on.

:twocents:

But if there is no run scored, is it really a sac fly or just another lazy fly ball?

I'm a Dooley fan so I'll trust him on this but how is Sunseri that much different than CLT '08? Saban disciple, integral piece of the Bama puzzle, top recruiter with huge potential that Bama will sorely miss. Whether Sunseri will shine or suck as DC is pure speculation at this point but I don't see how the people proclaiming a victory here can be so sure about it. I'm assuming that if we rewind 3 years that hiring CLT and promoting him to DC at UT would have garnered similar praise from those who are calling this a coup?

In his mind, CDD should hit a homerun every time at bat and the rest of the team shouldn't matter. It doesn't matter that hitting the sac fly was exactly the right play and he executed it correctly. It also doesn't matter that he took a hit against his personal stats in doing so.

Who said Dooley should hit a homerun everytime at bat? Heck for the sake of this analogy, all he had to do was hit a single...

Sure, this hire would not be a lazer shot to second base which turns into a double play that ends the game. It's just not, IMO, the hire that likely wins the game.

BTW for those who were wondering, the UK loss was Dooley coming to the plate with zero outs and needing one run to win and advance to the playoffs yet hits into a triple play... waamp waaaaamp... :banghead2:

Maybe you should do a poll, because I would bet that it is not the consensus. Also, being uninformed on top of condescending is no better than hurling insults.

My thoughts exactly.

How do we know CLT is actually pissed about this? Because someone said they heard from someone else that he was angry?

I am well aware of his bio. But the fact that he's had no DC experience at a BCS or pro level is concerning.

Are you really saying that most people feel that this is the homerun hire? Certainly not? It would be an okay hire and obviously way better than Spangler (which really wouldn't have surprised me...) but in no way is it the hire that everyone goes, "yep, that's the guy, our future is bright."

I dont think there is a DC out ther where people would say that. Its a DC when we had a pretty good defense already. There are far more glaring problems that is keeping UT from success.

It is interesting they hired him when they had soooo much interest in the position according to CDD. This is a hire made on potential instead of a known, sought after commodity. I do like the hire but I think it is BS that they had a long list of qualified candidates ready to jump at the opportunity to coach with CDD.

I think you are making it out to be worse than it is. 1, I wont assume he is hired until ut says its official bc of all the bs that's been going around. 2, why does the next dc have to be "proven?" Take a guy who has been exceptional at his job both in college and the pros, who has been a part of some great defenses, and you want to discount him just bc he hasn't held a certain title? 3, im excited about the future of our program bc of the players. I see a roster with talent everywhere, something we haven't had in a long time.

Is it so hard to understand that a coach will not make a lateral move, uproot his family, take a big risk unless he has reason to leave? A lateral move is defined as a large state U with a top 25 football program. Reasons to leave could be money, personality conflicts, sub standard performance.

Big programs can match the money if they want to keep the coach. We don't want under performers unless there are extenuating circumstances. So, the logical prospects who are interested are either unemployed, ones who would make a lateral move from a lesser program for more money, prospects from big programs who want a promotion (Position C to DC for example), ones who want to coach at their alma mater or be closer to home and family situations.

The ones who want to move up for the promotion or to a bigger program are usually the ones you want. You want ones who are hungry and will "work like heck". lol. You also like the proven prospects who are temporarily unemployed if they are a fit. Most of your prospects will be the up and comers who have the best potential.

Our biggest need right now is to get a lot of good players. That's why either Sunseri and Shannon would fit because they are very good at recruiting and pretty good coaches, too. If we keep filling the roster with the players who can perform in the SEC and keep them, we will be successful. Most of our players were Freshmen and Sophs last year. This year they will be Sophs and Jrs with a good class coming in. We should have an even better class for 2013 if we have good recruiters. Pretty simple concept, isn't it?

Chris Goforth of Fox Sports 1370 Chattanooga(TIFWIW), just reported that Tennessee has offered San Diego chargers special team coach Rich Bisaccia the special teams job as well as Assistant head coaching job at 350,000 per year. I'm sure this has been talked about on here at length but that seems like alot of cash. Good.

I did not read all of the replies to this but, to be accurate a fly ball that is caught is only considered to be a sacrifice fly if it scores a runner. So either Dooley did his job and scored the runner from second or it is no sacrifice fly ball. I guess your lack of football coach hiring knowledge is only surpassed by your lack of baseball knowledge.

So we pull a PROVEN winner off a NC team who has (again) a Proven track record and promote him one level up to DC and this is a dud hire????

The guy is also one of the top recruiters in the league.

Here's how this conversation goes wit recruits?

Wanna win a NC? I have and UT has and together we will win another with players like you.

Wanna know what it feels like to shut a team out of a bowl game? I know what it feels like.

Oh and her's my resume of players I've helped get to the first round in the NFL.

Pulls out list a mile long and watches it roll down the living room floor and into the carpet.

Any questions????

This guy could end up being BETTER than Shannon.
