Let's be clear here . . . Garner was and is a great recruiter, but he was only on our staff for two years.

Look at what he produced in those two years. Without the guys he pulled out of Georgia, Fulmer would have 0 SEC titles to show for his tenure at UT.

Maybe . . . maybe not. My point is that the way UGA was screwing the pooch in the mid 90s, it's not exactly a given that Garner was the sole reason that the state of Georgia was hemorrhaging players out of the state. We had been landing kids from Georgia for years. Dan Brooks and :yikes: Randy Sanders had a little to do with it too.

Take Jamal Lewis, Cosey Coleman, and Deon Grant away from UT and put them on the UGA roster. I bet Donnan wouldn't have looked nearly as lost.

It can also be easily argued that Quincy Carter, Champ Bailey, and Hines Ward did not win championships under Donnan. I think you can add Robert Edwards to that list but I don't remember. I am running out of liquor early tonight.

There has never been a coach in college football good enough to win a title with Quncy Carter.

I've got to give you credit for at least being educated and amusing with your negative reference.

He would have had to pick one up somewhere else, because he wouldn't have won in '97 and '98 without those guys.

Amen to that. Too bad his college career ended prematurely due to that "hand injury". :wink, wink:

Now if we could only get everyone in cyberspace to hold hands and sing "cum ba yah"(sp) this thread would really rock!

The problem with his hand was that it continually lifted joints to his lips.

Pearl probably wouldn't mind doing it either.

Anyway back to the thread.

I can't take another season like the last one. I can't remember being more frustrated than I was last year with just about every aspect of the game. By my standards, 9-3 is a down year. So I'm hoping for a big rebound this season.

I know that I've been labeled a Fulmerite because I don't constantly bash all things Tennessee and I stick up for the program and that's fine. Fact is, I just don't think it's healthy to hold on to something as bad as last season. It's time to look ahead and put the past behind us. It wasn't fun by any means, but it's not the end of the world either.

However, instead of turning this into another NegaVol vs. Fulmerite thread I'll simply say this...

I'll support Fulmer for another couple of years. I agree with those who think we've gone too long without an SEC championship or BCS bowl. I think everyone deserves a chance to turn things around and Fulmer is running out of time. He's been great for the program, there's no doubt about that. But everyone's time comes and goes. We'll just have to wait and see if Fulmer's is in fact gone.

I know that Fulmer is all Vol though. If anyone thinks that he's content with the Vols losing to anyone, you're wrong. The SEC is a tough conference and football is a tough game. You can't win them all.

I look for the coaching changes to be effective and for the Big Orange to have a chip on their shoulder this season. It all starts with taking care of California.

I actually agree with most of this post. The best thing for UT is for Fulmer to turn it around. If not, then it could get ugly. My biggest gripes with Fulmer are his stubbornness with sticking with people like RS, Pat Washington and JRS too long, and what seems to be his lack of fire. I feel like if he had that fire to win championships, he would have done something about the offense well before last year. Offensive production has been lacking for some time, and the play of certain positions has been lacking as well. Maybe his fixes will turn things around this year. I certainly hope so.

I don't expect NC or SEC championships every year. Realistically, I expect an SEC championship once every five years. I don't think that is too much to expect of a program of Tennessee's tradition, resources and fan base.

My biggest gripes with Fulmer supporters are that a lot of them believe he deserves a contract for life because of what happened in 98. Another gripe is that some seem content with going 8-4 and 9-3 and going to a Peach Bowl every year.

Fulmer has done a good job overall with the best year of course being 98 with a NC. I hope he does well and if he does really well this year these threads will stop. But as we all know, coaching in general, is about what have you done for me lately. Reality is if we have another bad year he is out. If we don't he'll be around for at least another year. This is reality whether you a Fulmer supporter or not. I hope he has good year which would translate to the Vols having good year. Also a bit selfish on my part, I live in an area surrounded by Gators and just hope I don't have to catch another year of sh*t from the locals. Go Vols!

I have not seen one single person say that Fulmer should have a lifetime contract. You have made that up in your mind. Also, NO ONE is "content going to the Peach Bowl every year", but I will say that you people pretend the Peach Bowl is the worst possible destination in the world. The only thing that has been bad about it, has been the way we have played there. It is the biggest non-BCS Bowl, and now that the ACC has some good teams in it (FSU, Va Tech, Miami) it can be a GREAT match-up for an SEC team. It's close enough for most of us local Vol fans to get to, and it's in a decently priced city as far as rooms and food are concerned.

You haters need to get it out of your mind that the "Chik Fil Lay" Bowl is such a bad place to be, because it's not always 8-4 SEC teams that are playing there. 2 Loss LSU played thier last year, and had a pretty damn good time doing it.

Only losers accept their status as losers. Guess you at least know what you are and are happy with it.

On one hand, you say noone is content for going to the Peach Bowl, then you try to make the case for contentment.

I can't believe our program has regressed to the point that someone is trying to tell me a second rate bowl in a hellhole of a city is a good thing.

No kidding. Did we pick up a bunch of Vanderbilt fans? This is the University of Tennessee. Not freaking Vanderbilt, not Kentucky, not South Carolina, Mississippi State... you get the point.

As both alumni and long time supporters of UT, my husband and I are all too happy to see a topic dedicated (at least intended too) to supporting CPF. We're like the majority of other fans we love to win and hate to lose. It's human nature. But I think the thing a lot of people forget is CPF is human. Yes, he's a well paid coach of a major football program but he makes mistakes, bad decisions, whatever you may call it. You and I certainly have. We have all said if we could only do this over again... I'm sure CPF has thought outcomes of games might have been different if different plays were called, etc. He may wish he had recruited this one or that one, or not have taken this person. But the point is, yes last year was bad and no we definately do not want another season like that. UT has a reputation for excellence in academics and in sports. The day we settle for o.k. and come to expect that, is the day we need to close the door. And yes, from my user ID you can tell, I'm a lady whom many may think is giving you this nice little cheerleader rah,rah but stop and think about it. One person didn't take this team down and one person is not going to build it back up overnight so give Phil your support.

very good post :peace2:
