Yes, Germany eventually needed the oil. Not at that time, since... Drum roll... Russia was their ally and trading partner.
It was the biggest unnecessary blunder in the history of warfare.
The defenses of Assad in here rest on the following:
1. Assad is not a narcissist.
2. Persons are, as a general rule, good at assessing consequences and their own long term self interest.
3. Persons are, as a general rule, good at behaving according to that assessment.
Right...
The defense rest on the proof....nothing else...which is zero...
If there were factual evidence of Assad gassing his own people....US soldiers would've been smoking cigars in Assad's presidential palace years ago...

Is there any reason to believe Assad is a rational person? All of this arguing about whether he did or did not do it seems to go back and forth on if he's rational. He's a dictator. He obviously believes it's his right to do whatever he wants. How does that support he thinks in a rational way?
As for why he would gas his own people? Why did Hitler commit any of the atrocities he did against German Jews and many other people as well? Why does a serial killer kill? Why does anyone do anything. Sometimes, it's just because they can.
As for why we should get involved? I'm not sure if we should or should not. I know we left Hitler alone long enough for him to grow into a global threat. Could that possibly happen with Assad? I don't know. Could Syria and other ME countries ally themselves with Russia and lead us into WWIII? Not a clue on my part. My point, I honestly don't know how to feel about US involvement. When we ignored Hitler, millions upon millions of people died. But if we're not committed to doing whatever it takes to win, then it's just another Vietnam.
I guess the better question is why would you assume he's irrational? Why do you think he thinks he can do whatever he wants? Historically, things haven't ended well for most dictators. Fidel is the exception to the rule.
He's not Hitler. He's fighting terrorists within his borders, not invading other countries and committing genocide against civilians.

How many dictators have been considered rational? Trut is correct in that it takes a certain narcissism to be a dictator. That does not favor rational thought on his part. As for Hitler, he didn't start out invading other countries either. He took the time to crush all of his opposition in Germany first. Isn't that kind of what Assad is doing?
OK, but say your worst fears are correct and he's going to invade one of his neighbors, or something crazy like that, the bottom line is he isn't a significant threat to us. The worst he can do is goad us into a quagmire, but that requires our self-destructive compliance.
He's not a significant threat to us NOW. You can't assume that doesn't change if left to his own devices. Do you think Germany was considered a big threat after losing WWI?
And on a larger scale, whatever benefits Russia, does not benefit us, unless you believe Putin is also just a misunderstood dictator.
