Phillip Fulmer out at Tennessee ... but Boyd remains committed

Two days after Phoebus quarterback Tajh Boyd committed to Tennessee, reports are out all over the place that Volunteers coach Phillip Fulmer has agreed to step down at the end of the season. An official announcement is supposed to come later today.

Does this change anything for Boyd, who on Saturday said he had been told no coaching changes were imminent? According to Phantoms coach Bill Dee, the answer is no. Boyd remains committed to the Vols, who fell to 3-6 with Saturday night’s loss at South Carolina.

Commitments are just that – commitments – which means either side has some leeway. But as of now, the official word from Phoebus is that Tajh Boyd remains a Volunteer

This was my biggest fear, and thankfully we won't lose the kid. Out of all the recruits we have coming in, he is the one WE NEED.

At the same time, we need to stay away from the spread offense, because Boyd has stated that he isn't interested and I don't even want to think about Crompton or Stephens trying to run Meyer's or Leach's offense.

Neither Crompton nor Stephens will be the Vols starting QB next year

thats good news. maybe he can get a hold of the other commits and try to settle them down. recruiting is a lot like follow the leader, thats why the nunes commit really helped us. got a couple other guys because of him. i think we can hold most of our commits and begin the process of being nationally relevant again. living in chicago, i can not get tennessee games if theyre not producing on the field.

I hope he stays true to his word...maybe he can bring in Morgan Moses with him. Although Morgan was really fond of Fulmer.

A lot of positions will be wide open for new recruits to have a crack at starting, including quarterback. This will appeal to a heck of a lot of kids.

If we keep our list of recruits with little or no losses, there has to be some inside information being given to them as to the future of the program should certain events take place. They had to be expecting this and comfortable with what they are told as to likely replacements.

If a company came to you and told you to still come to work for them but they are firing the CEO and not sure where there future is headed, how committed would you be? UT has to have a pretty firm idea of who is next on the sidelines and if we don't lose any recruits in the process, then Fulmer has to know it as well.

I'm confident he will still come unless we hire a coach that he doesn't like when he meets him. I feel the same about the rest of the recruiting class. We're bound to lose somebody, maybe even a few, but we're TENNESSEE, so most of those guys will probably at least wait it out to see who the new guy is.

Tajh committed knowing what was going to happen. He is coming here for the love of the university, not just coach Fulmer.

exactly....i just wonder if the Hamilton said Fulmer wasn't going anywhere comment he made was false info so he wouldn't say anything.

yeah boyd said in a volquest article today that he is still firm to TN. he commited to the university not the coach

Can't access the whole article, but the summary says enough, and confirms what his coach said earlier. Tajh Boyd is a Volunteer.

It just mystifies me as to why Fulmer and Co. offered Josh Nunes a scholarship when this kid is all Vol at heart, and an elite prospect.

This week Tennessee grabbed a commitment from a five-star prospect in Tajh Boyd and with Philip Fulmer announcing that he will step down after this season today that obviously created a very odd situation for the Hampton, Va., signal caller. We caught up with him tonight to talk about why he will be staying with Tennessee going forward.

I would guess it's because he was committed to WV at the time. And I think we've proven you can never have enough QB's

We need a talented QB like you yo get this program going again. Tee Martin was the last mobile QB we had and look what he did!

actually we had brent schaeffer and look what he did. But, I agree Boyd looks really really good and would love to have him.

From what I've gathered from Boyd's interviews, Nunes committed to TN before Boyd ever committed to WV.

Schaeffer actually wasn't that bad when he started for us. It was after he left that he really started to suck.

It's kind of strange. I don't have to worry about Fulmer trying to turn another mobile QB into a reciever.
