This offense is not built to play behind the sticks, and we seem to play behind the sticks a lot.

Now tell us how deep the league was those years??

remember we had to beat a very very average Miss state and Auburn teams to win our two SEC titles….

The league was very thin in those years
This^^^^^.

The winner of the TN/FLA game was the east champion and most likely SEC champ because the other teams were so Average.

Literally there not a single job on this planet that he would have left Tennessee, his dream job, for……

There was some rumors about him taking over for the panthers when that franchise started…

I didn’t buy that he was really a candidate

The SEC is only getting tougher with the additions of Oklahoma and Texas. And 10-2 with the schedule we will have is a darn good year and would likely put us in the top 12 CFP. I would be happy to be in the conversation year in and year out and make the CFP.

Sure we may have a year like this year, but we are still reloading and developing at QB and WR. Its a down year for the position and it happens at nearly every program. We are still dealing with scholarship reductions as well. Even then, as long as we beat Vandy, this is only the 5th time in the last 16 seasons we have reached 8 or more wins with the opportunity to get 9 in a bowl game.

It would be a situation reminiscent to our current basketball program. Rick Barnes teams are always respectable, compete for the conference championship, and will always land you somewhere between the Sweet 16 and Rd of 64 in March Madness. He likely is never going to win the big one, but its fun to pretend, win some big games, and be in the conversation at the end of the year.

I think people forget we have lost our best WR, best cover corner, and maybe our best LB this year and today we lost another WR and had a starting DB go down.

All of this after we lost Hooker, Tillman and Hyatt from last season.

It was said about Spurrier after the Nebraska debacle that he was an offensive genius who would never win serious hardware. Then he went out and identified the best realistic DC he could upgrade to and won a NC the next year. Heupels story isn’t written unless he is too stubborn and willing to accept mediocrity to stay in his comfort zone.
As great as Spurrier was he won 1 NC and played for another one.

I think it’s clear this staff with its style of offense is going to give us many many 7-9 wins seasons… I also think we are never going to win more than 10. I don’t think this offense is ever avoiding the stinker type outings we saw today and at Florida… it’s just two built In losses.

From my seat watching the Vols in 80s-present I’m never going to be upset with 8-9 win years so I am voting take it. Jmo
We won 11 last year...😐.

Why can't you count??

Lol can we at least watch the two seasons with Nico before we declare what the “ceiling” is. It was an ugly loss. I still believe the future is bright though

We have already gone to a NY6 bowl. Did the whole board smoke meth lol
We won 11 last year. Some really stupid fans after the crappy decade and a half we have been through. I think it could get worse before it gets better with our line next year but why not give the guy a chance when we have already had an 11 win season and won a NY6 bowl?

Well considering that in the last 15 years we have had 3 seasons where we won more than 8 games, one of those being last years 11-2, I will take a floor of 8-5 to 10-3 for a bit. While I want us to win it all every year, you also have to be realistic about where we are as a program and where we have been. While CJH may not be the next Saban, I'd settle for him being the next Bobby Bowden

Had he especially and even Fulmer to some extent had a playoff like in today’s game they may have had additional NC’s.

Years ago it was unfathomable to lose your conference championship game and still get a second chance. That’s exactly how Georgia won their first NC.

Ohhh the horror. He did this while playing in the SEC and sharing a state with two perennial top 3 teams.
Facts are facts. He was a great coach with a ton a talent on his team. He made a change at DC and won 1 NC, same s Fulmer.

Regular season wins …

You know the wins that get you into title games and playoffs….

Hopefully you can understand that but I have my doubts
I think 10-2 in the new SEC probably gets you into the playoffs a decent amount of times from now on.
I also think you being so sure Heupel will never win more than 10 doesn’t make much sense either. He won 11 last year and 12 at UCF, so he had shown he can win more than 10 with his “guaranteed 2 loss” offense.
This is his first big time HC job and he has done great with what he inherited here. After 3-7 with Pruitt I sure didn’t think we would have a double digit win season with a NY6 win over Clemson.
The only thing that really worries me is that we seem to get penalized a lot. I love Heupe’s demeanor on the sideline always encouraging the guys instead of screaming at them. I think he could be a coach that lets us compete for championships or maybe not but I think he has earned some time to show us what he’s got.

Now espn will pretend a 52/17 win over a #9 ole miss matters. I see the playoff committee downgrading ga to # 5

I want a staff who averages 9 wins, makes a run at winning the SEC every 3 years or so, and never gets embarrassed like we did today
