Aren’t they also the best prospect of a sea port with access to Afghanistan to maintain supply lines? Or at least the best one that avoided sole dependence on the Russians. Think I remember hearing that somewhere but I don’t really know anything about Turkmenistan.

Less dependence on Russia and Pakistan was one of the best strategic arguments I heard for getting out. Not wanting a limited, tribal government with a history of being cozy with terrorists on the border of Pakistan, due to nukes was the best one in favor of staying.

For sea access from Afghanistan, it boils down to Iran and Pakistan; and Pakistan seems to be the significantly better choice. There's lots of nasty geography any way you go.

Yes, but our support was going on prior to 9/11. It was also a counter balance to Iran and supplying the Mujahideen in the 80s; so, we've had "interests" over there for a while. Probably even longer since the whole area was a counter to the Soviets.

Not sure what you're saying in the second paragraph

China will supply and pay off the Taliban to do their bidding while they rape the country.
If China can impose stability and infrastructure onto Afghanistan via bribes, they're a lot more cleaver than anyone else has been.

All this talk about Trump having a plan for an orderly withdrawal (not leaving any weapons behind) is pure bs.

I still content it doesn't matter who was in the white house, the last few weeks of a withdrawal was always going to be messy and disheveled. Anybody would have bungled it, and it may not have been the same mistakes, but mistakes would have been made. It's impossible to tell, however, if it would have had a better or worse outcome than what actually happened.

They’ve got some choppers now to expedite the important stuff.
