China does not, and at the moment is incapable of, projecting force beyond the Taiwan Strait area. Their economy and entire society is dependent upon putting low-skilled manufacturing/cheap plastic **** on ships and sending them across the Pacific (and other places). The US Navy controls the world's oceans and the US created and maintains the system of "free trade" that has existed since WWII.
You should really look into how much money China is pouring into Africa. They're not limited to the straits. Look up their Belt and Road project. They have their fingers in a lot of pies.

Yeah they do. That's called "playing catch up ball" as the great Ric Flair would say. How many pies do you think we have our fingers in?

We live in a bizarro world where the free trader is a globalist and the guy proposing an entangling alliance in Asia is not.

I mostly agree because a lot of original thoughts have morphed into strange fantasies. Competition between companies was supposed to encourage better products and decreased prices, but we see competition in a much darker light ... destroy the competition or take them over. We also failed to see unions and government intervention to aid unions as "free and fair" rather than stifling competition for labor. That competition would have kept our labor rates closer to world labor rates and in turn kept us more competitive worldwide. The real bizarre episode was deciding in mid stream to embrace "free trade" and globalism after decades long policies ensured destruction of our industry. With the destruction of middle class blue collar jobs, you lose hope for a better future and the understanding of why education is important; so we've got a lot of idle and a growing uneducated people now which is a very bad position to push.

Nope. Mexico would make it for us. There are other places in the world that can make cheap plastic ****, not just them.

China controls the Panama Canal? WTF?

They've got y'all scared to death in there.

You are the one that is snowed. Just look at the computer chip shortage and what it's done to manufacturing here. The majority of those chips are made in China Taiwan and Japan China could stop supply of 90% of them to the US. And just how long would it take mexico to gear up to replace Chinese manufacturing.

Yes, China controls the ports at each end of the canal and much of the infrastructure that keeps the canal operational. Control the ports and you control the canal.

Key Decision Point Coming for the Panama Canal

We depend on that system for security (and now that the Cold War is over, we need it less), not economic reasons. The United States created it to begin with.
Where would we get the rare earth metals and technological crap we import from them? It's not just cheap plastic crap we depend on.

When the dollar goes cappooey, the US Navy will disappear just like the USSR..Rusting pierside hulls.

It's mostly the low-end technological crap...you were being sarcastic but you're right. Many other places in the world that can produce that. So maybe there's a chip shortage for your smart coffee maker that sends a message to your cell phone when it's done brewing.

The high end stuff comes from Japan and the United States.

Those facilities don't even exist. It would take years to get that up and running. If it were an easy endeavor it would have already happened.

I should have used blue font.

the press conf today suggests they didn't want to do a large evacuation partly at the request of the Afghan government and belief it would undermine faith in said government.

even the snippet you posted indicates the State Dept wasn't prepared to process people who needed help due to documentation issues.

State has a huge backlogs of passports even over here. That bureaucracy and most others aren't exactly competent and efficient in the best of times ... and they've been absolutely terrorized by four years of Trump and then covid - not to mention the mean things that happened to their diverse world when Trump was elected. At least they got a new paid holiday as part of the reparations for surviving Trump.

Guess what, China could take Taiwan in the snap of fingers. The US has proven with the handling of Afghanistan that they will be unwilling or incapable of stopping them. China taking Taiwan is all but a forgone conclusion.
That's cute you think that Afghanistan and Taiwan are on the same level of strategic importance. If they could take it with a snap of the fingers, why haven't they done it already? They've had since 1949.
