What do you mean "arrived?" We're over there already.
I am aware of US airpower in Guam and Okinawa, but if the CCP decides to invade Taiwan from only 100 miles away with hundreds of thousands of troops...it is over. Maybe intelligence picks up the pre strike movements maybe not.

We would be on a war footing that is thousands of miles away vs 100 miles. And I guarantee you we would not hit China proper.

BREAKING: Biden Admin Tells Americans Trapped In Afghanistan It ‘Cannot Guarantee’ Their Safety To Airport

President Joe Biden’s administration told American citizens trapped in Afghanistan that the administration cannot guarantee their safety if they travel to the airport in Kabul to be evacuated.

The Biden administration sent the following message to Americans trapped in Afghanistan:
To American Citizens,

Nikki Haley: Biden 'destroyed' everything we've done in Afghanistan, 'humiliated' America

'It didn't have to be this way,' the former US ambassador to the UN says

Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley slammed President Biden on Tuesday for having "failed miserably" on Afghanistan policy, telling "America Reports" the Afghan people and U.S. military have been let down by America being "run out of town."

She's playing dumb since this was going to happen to matter what. The 20yrs there was a massive waste

Have you seen that ramp nosed aircraft carrier they bought second hand from the Russians? Other than all of the weapons they stole from us, I don't think their navy is a big threat.

Close to home it's a big threat. They have a sizable submarine fleet and any war over Taiwan would be within land based aircraft from mainland China.

At any given time, who knows. At least one carrier battle group, which carries way more firepower than their one carrier. And then there's 9 more after that that could be moved into position.

And as I posted earlier any war over Taiwan would put our Navy within range of land based aircraft and China's sub fleet.

Nothing like being a US citizen and the .gov saying F you and if you can make your way past the people trying to kill you we might help you. A real president wouldn't leave US citizens behind.

For a country of their size, their Navy is something of a joke. Especially on the carrier front.

Hog isn't wrong that closer to their home they are a bigger threat, but in any war with Taiwan the United States would have land-based aircraft to bring into the fray (just like China would as well) from Japan/South Korea/Pacific islands.

Which it will for some indefinite period of time, because there is no viable alternative. The Eurozone is still a s**tshow and has been for the entire time post-financial crisis.

There is no doubt that the United States abuses its reserve currency status and that it allows us to do things other countries couldn't get away with (because they don't have underlying bids under their currency). And one day the USD will not be the primary reserve currency. But not any time soon.

China is doing a great job at making it appear to the world like they are some ascendant power. The reason they are moving at this pace is because they know their time is limited. Same as Russia.

China is vulnerable economically except for one major point. We shut down our plants and can't easily replace much of what comes from China. China needs foreign income to keep their people in line now that they've tasted a little capitalism. It may be a stalemate for now on an economic front, but our decline in the will to work and will to learn are going to increasingly kill off our prospects of re-growing an industry. If you think we understand the issue, think about how much of the "liberated" world looks at global warming and self sacrifice while ignoring the real problem countries. Millennials aren't about to give up Chinese toys even for climate concern, and they certainly aren't going to be stepping into a manufacturing plant without a lot of education and attitude adjustment.

Especially since we left them well armed. I don't have any affinity to that part of the world and I hate to see the bloodbath that will happen there, but they're not like us, and we will never change their way of life and the brutality that they live by.
Been fighting in the sandbox for thousands of years. We are not going to alter that culture. It will continue.

I would like to see them set a number of potential "qualifications".

Date, and "military victory". First one to be achieved. Beyond that congress has to approve.

I was thinking about some others but I see them wiggling out of qualifications like deployment size, budget cost, lives lost.

When body bags start coming home the American people get cold feet and that spreads rapidly to congress. When congress cuts off funds to keep their own jobs, then we just leave a different ally in the lurch. Go to win or stay home, but congress wants to do it by committee - funding, dates, costs, ROEs, and most presidents are no better.

I'm not really sure what they have to offer us anymore? It used to be oil, but we made ourselves oil independent. Oh wait, our commander in chief f'd that up too.
There was absolutely no reason to remain in Afghanistan once bin Laden was killed. And that's being very generous, because that was a symbolic event anyway.

For the broader ME, yes, you're right.

What we could do to them without firing a shot is much more severe.

We won't, and they and the rest of the world know it. Look what they did with covid; and nobody anywhere is talking about any kind of economic reparations, preventive measures, or oversight. The Chinese got a bundle of intelligence from this round; and they know what to expect if the really want to institute biological, economic, or electronic warfare.
