Talked to a Cincy fan about Butch

He'll be better than Dooley in game. I think we can all agree on that.

Living in Cincinnati and having close relations with UC I can tell you that there's not a Bearcat fan around that wouldn't take Butch Jones back right now. In addition, I'm willing to bet most of them would take him over Brian Kelly. It was a much tougher team that he coached. Tifwiw but I think OP's concerns about X's and O's is unwarranted.

I find it interesting you say that...so do you believe Butch is a better coach than Kelly?

So is knowing your team. You didnt really provide any argument against the other people, you just wrote a blanket statement, your approximation of the frequency of every coaches mistakes followed by another blanket statement. And really, even your temporal estimation is impossible to validate or reject, making all three points completely empty. The only thing Im surprised at is that you didnt say GBO at the end to give yourself a nice pep rally for your side of the argument that you aided in no way. Just sayin

Put down honeybadgers'weed and step away from the buttchugging area.

There isn't a coach at the highest level that doesnt make mistakes, basically on a weekly basis. Its part of the game.

It's easy to say this for an unbeaten coach.

Once the team blows a couple close games, a lot of people here are going to be singing a different tune.

And most people don't watch enough football, or they don't pay attention if they do. There are no perfect coaches. Mistakes will be made. Hopefully, talent, development, coaching the other 95% of the game, depth, and effort makes up for the mistakes made. Those are the teams that win. If you can't do the other things and make mistakes, you get Dooley.

Agreed. Saban has even done some boneheaded stuff in games. During the 2009 game, there was one particular drive where they ran the wildcat on us at will with mark Ingram all the way down to our 1 yard line, then threw 3 consecutive unsuccessful fade passes to Julio Jones. Logic would've said stick with the wildcat that they can't stop, but saban decided that wasn't a good idea. In the LSU game they lost 9-6 in overtime, he also showed extreme logic when he only needed a field goal, and instead of just handing it to Trent Richardson, he decided to throw it 3 straight times, suffering lost yardage, and putting them out of field goal range. The diffference with saban though is that he recruits at an elite level, and he also develops his talent as good or better than anyone else in the country. Every coach will leave you scratching your head at times, but the great ones do all the other things right to mask the few bad calls that can happen during the course of a game.

I met a Cincinnati fan last week while at a conference in Charleston. We talked football for a bit, and I asked what his opinion of Butch Jones was. He said that he believes him to be a good recruiter, but warned me that he's likely to make a few in game decisions that will leave you scratching your head. I asked if that meant he wasn't a great X's and O's guy, and he said that's exactly what he means. He did say that he think's he's a good overall coach, and that he'll do well in Knoxville.

Obviously, I don't know if the guy I met is a good judge of coaching skill, but that's what he had to say on the subject.

So, when I meet a guy who thinks Butch is one of the greatest coaches in history, I should post this conversation as well? Perhaps we could let Jones coach a few seasons and comment on results rather than conjecture. GBO!

Keepin in mind a coach has seconds to run a mind analysis on the situation, it's easy to hindsight 20/20 when you have minutes to mull it over. ESPN has made a good living doing the latter, the prior is why they make the big bucks and what separates the top ten coaches from the ham n eggers.

I like Butch, but I doubt we will compete for National Championships anytime in this generation. The demographics of our region just don't put us in a good position to be contenders any time soon. This year: 6-6, bowl loss. Next year: 7-5, bowl win. Year after, 8-4, bowl. Year after, 7-5, bowl, etc. Just get used to it.

Good god man! Get in touch with somebody and tell them we should recruit nationally, not just in this region! Butch probably hasn't thought of that.

I disagree with this...what demographics do you speak of? Are you Nostrodamus or something?

I like that he has the balls to make decisions like that....even if they don't always work. I want to win, but I want to see exciting Tennessee football too. I want to see successful reverses, blocked punts and field goals, trick plays, and ballsy calls that will get the fans excited.

Play to win or play to not lose?

I'll choose play to win every time.
I am not against going for it in order to give your team a chance. I was just answering a post about questionable calls. If they had worked, he would have looked brilliant. Those are the chances you take. I am glad he is willing to gamble. It shows his players that he has confidence in them.
