Has there ever been a coach that you haven't second guessed? Being honest I've second guessed every play since 1999. Just being a honest fan ...Are we ever satisfied ?

Hedley Lamarr: [frowns] "Number 6"? I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that one.

Taggart: Well, that's where we go a-ridin' into town, a-whompin' and a-whumpin' every livin' thing that moves within an inch of its life. Except the women folks, of course.
+++afraid to post the rest of the scene++++

it would probably be hard to get a ticket to the dance if you did

Demographically we don't have nearly enough in-state talent to draw from. We can't recruit nationally like we could in the 90s because other teams in the SEC are now doing the same thing. We used to have a pretty good monopoly on that type of recruiting. Now it's a lot more competitive. LSU has locked down Louisiana, a state we used to recruit like crazy. Texas is definitely out. California is being raided by Oregon, USC, UCLA, and now even Stanford. We still get some guys from Florida, but not enough to make up for the difference. This is an unfortunate fact.
Dont guess it matters that metro Nashville is over a million and one of the fastest growing citys in America.

UT's recruiting disadvantage is slowly becoming a non-issue as Middle Tennessee increases in population. In 10 years, we'll be able to fill up half the class with kids from Davidson/Rutherford/Williamson counties alone.

Yep. Also talked to a gent from the Chattanooga /NGa planning commission a month a go.He told me they think that area will double in population in the next 5 to 7 yrs.Its about 500k now.

Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Maryland...Jones has a ton of connections up north.

I don't know if that's true or not but I do think he'll do great at Tennessee. Yes he may call some silly plays sometimes but what coach doesn't?

Risky plays have only one of two outcomes:

1. They work and the coach is ncknamed "The Gambler," "The Genius" or something like that.

Or

2. They get stuffed and are called "silly," etc.

It isn't the call itself that leads to these judgments, but the result.

I met a Cincinnati fan last week while at a conference in Charleston. We talked football for a bit, and I asked what his opinion of Butch Jones was. He said that he believes him to be a good recruiter, but warned me that he's likely to make a few in game decisions that will leave you scratching your head. I asked if that meant he wasn't a great X's and O's guy, and he said that's exactly what he means. He did say that he think's he's a good overall coach, and that he'll do well in Knoxville.

Obviously, I don't know if the guy I met is a good judge of coaching skill, but that's what he had to say on the subject.

Coach Saban and Spurrier leaves you scratching your head sometimes. Stuff happens. However BUTCH GETS IT.

As long as he doesn't sit on the ball with 1:47 in the 4th, with two future NFL wideouts and an NFL QB to take his chance in overtime... I'll take it.

So, when I meet a guy who thinks Butch is one of the greatest coaches in history, I should post this conversation as well? Perhaps we could let Jones coach a few seasons and comment on results rather than conjecture. GBO!

It's the offseason. If this is the stance we take why post anything?

no question he is better than DD, to me he got better with time. He didn't overwhelm in the game against UT, but he looked good in some games last year.
Wouldn't surprise me to see him make some questionable calls early in the year then get better as the team grows.

First of all , after Channing Fugate returned the kickoff 14 yards to the Tenn. 39 yard line, there were 43 seconds left in regulation, not 1:47.

Secondly, the NFL QB and future NFL wideouts gained a total of 2 yards on their last 2 possessions of the 4th quarter. The 2 yards were on a run by Neal. The NFL QB threw 3 incompletions in his last 4 attempts of the 4th quarter. The NFL QB's only completion was to Marlin Lane for zero yards on the last play of regulation.

So, this high powered NFL laden offense gained a total of 2 yards on their last 5 plays, in their last 2 possessions of the 4th quarter. Maybe Dooley was looking at current form , instead of a pipe dream, thinking that Bray and his great wideouts could actually make something happen in the clutch.

I was mad at the time, but he wins that game, there is a good chance he is still coach.

There is absolutely no way you you can seriously defend Dooley's decisions at the end of that game. Even if we had won in OT I would still have been scratching my head. You don't just leave that amount of time on the clock and opt for OT.

We were faced with 3rd and 10 , and had not gained but 2 yards in the previous 5 plays. Bray had completed 1 of his last 4 passes for zero yards. The last one to Lane for no yards was almost intercepted behind the line of scrimmage. There was about 30 some seconds on the clock. We were facing another Bray "game on the line" incompletion and a punt, that would have given the other team 30 seconds to go downfield and kick a field goal against the worst defense known to man.

After the punt, if the snap wasn't mishandled or the punt wasn't blocked or returned a long way, Missouri would probably have only needed about 40 yards to get into field goal range. I am sure that was not out of the question. I am not sure that I wouldn't have done the same in his position. Bray had a way of wilting with the game on the line.

I know one of UC's young running backs and he was very disappointed that CBJ left UC to come to Tennessee. He felt that they UC, was on the brink of becoming a very good football team. He says that Tennessee got a great coach and wished that he was still at UC.

No wonder you like Dooley. You have the exact same "play not to lose" mentality.

With Bray at quarterback, and the game on the line, it is probably better to live to fight another day. If I was the coach, and had an intensely competitive qb who could be counted on in the clutch, I would have played to win outright. He had Bray, who completed 1 of 4 passes for zero yards in the last 2 possessions of regulation.

You don't have to be clutch at all to win in OT. That would be no pressure at all.
