Talked to a Cincy fan about Butch

I disagree with this...what demographics do you speak of? Are you Nostrodamus or something?

Demographically we don't have nearly enough in-state talent to draw from. We can't recruit nationally like we could in the 90s because other teams in the SEC are now doing the same thing. We used to have a pretty good monopoly on that type of recruiting. Now it's a lot more competitive. LSU has locked down Louisiana, a state we used to recruit like crazy. Texas is definitely out. California is being raided by Oregon, USC, UCLA, and now even Stanford. We still get some guys from Florida, but not enough to make up for the difference. This is an unfortunate fact.

Kentucky is number one in recruiting on Rivals, which tells you all you need to know. It's meaningless at this point. We will have a top 15 recruiting class, and in 3-5 years, we may be a consistent top 15 team, but National Championships are a thing of the past I'm afraid.

I like Butch, but I doubt we will compete for National Championships anytime in this generation. The demographics of our region just don't put us in a good position to be contenders any time soon. This year: 6-6, bowl loss. Next year: 7-5, bowl win. Year after, 8-4, bowl. Year after, 7-5, bowl, etc. Just get used to it.

In recent posts you were almost convincing as a Vol fan...I wondered how long you would play the ruse out before it ate you up inside...not long as it turns out...so in short...we're doomed, can't compete recruitingwise and Go Bama...gotcha chachi

Keepin in mind a coach has seconds to run a mind analysis on the situation, it's easy to hindsight 20/20 when you have minutes to mull it over. ESPN has made a good living doing the latter, the prior is why they make the big bucks and what separates the top ten coaches from the ham n eggers.

Agree...Im the best coach in the world from the couch, but if I was on the sidelines with the weight of the whole game on my shoulders im fairly comfident I could if possible suck worse than Dooley.

Bad argument. Last time I checked we won the NC while the university was in Knoxville, I believe were still there. By using this logic a team like Notre Dame or Ohio St could never win big. Not one word about the Carolinas or Georgia, we can recruit those areas just as good as we used to. This whole situation is part of a cycle, just like Bama was down for a while and came back to win championships, so shall we!!! Just one mans opinion.

So, when I meet a guy who thinks Butch is one of the greatest coaches in history, I should post this conversation as well? Perhaps we could let Jones coach a few seasons and comment on results rather than conjecture. GBO!

Too logical. What would Volnation do until then?

No doubt National championships are hard to come by, we may not win another for twenty years, but you best believe WE WILL WIN ANOTHER ONE! With the new system, all we have to do is finish the regular season in the top 4 and anything can happen from there. No reason to believe we cant get back to being a yearly top 20 team with an occasional top 5 team every 5-6 years.

And most people don't watch enough football, or they don't pay attention if they do. There are no perfect coaches. Mistakes will be made. Hopefully, talent, development, coaching the other 95% of the game, depth, and effort makes up for the mistakes made. Those are the teams that win. If you can't do the other things and make mistakes, you get Dooley.

Not so fast...many, many players go to schools for these reasons:

1) Close to home (meaning dad/mom) can drive there to see games in under 4 hours. That roughly equates to a 250+ mile radius of Knoxville - very large recruiting territory

2) Early playing time. All 5* (and most 4*) think they'll be playing on Sunday. They want to show what they got in year 1 and 2; coast in year 3; come out early and be drafted in the 1 or 2 round

3) Facilities - they can really impress a recruit. UT has the best in the country (right now)

4) Play in an elite conference - meaning SEC. Many players will opt for an SEC school over others b/c of NFL preparation that conference offers

5) Childhood team/legacy - father, brother, etc. played for school or grew up a fan

6) Play for a school with national recognition. UT has lost some luster here of late, but we're still on the radar.

For these reasons, UT will be able to recruit with the best of them. I expect top 15 classes year in and year out. With that level of talent one blocked kick, missed assignment, punt-return can land you in championship games

UT's recruiting disadvantage is slowly becoming a non-issue as Middle Tennessee increases in population. In 10 years, we'll be able to fill up half the class with kids from Davidson/Rutherford/Williamson counties alone.

In terms of sheer numbers, I suspect that you may be painting an overly rosy picture, but there is no question that both the quality and quantity of midstate high school recruits are improving significantly. Furthermore, we are, at least this year, talking about prospects ranked among the top 100 players nationally.

This makes it imperative that Butch approach each and every Vanderbilt game as a statement game. The sooner we can put the Commodes in our rear view mirror, the sooner Butch can begin to lock down virtually any instate prospect, at least those in middle and east Tennessee, that we truly want.

That guy needs a good number 6.

Hedley Lamarr: [frowns] "Number 6"? I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that one.

Taggart: Well, that's where we go a-ridin' into town, a-whompin' and a-whumpin' every livin' thing that moves within an inch of its life. Except the women folks, of course.

National Championships are a thing of the past? I hadn't heard we'd been disqualified from competing for a NC. Pisses me off RC!! BTW it's a mighty big country with lots of kids to choose from. Don't believe me...try walking across it and post again when you get back.
