Tee's explanation

Lets stop this! CBJ never wanted him. This is all theater.
Jones wanted his people, but this made him look like he was on the fans side to get Tee.

Both could have been out recruiting and in Jones' case, looking for an assistant he actually wanted to hire but instead they both decided to lose time on the recruiting trail for show? I seriously doubt it.

My guess:
There was an invite.
Tee was interested and even brought the whole family.
Something fell through during talks.
Tee makes a statement to make it look like he wasn't about to abandon his current team and school, he had to save face.

As I reserve judgement on Jones I agree this was theatre both ways. I believe if the money was right T would be a Vol right now regardless of rhetoric. As for Jones he is in love with his staff that we whipped by 20 plus. He will live or die professionally with that decision. Kind of reminds me of Dooley bringing in Sal. I am afraid Jones is just an aggressive Dooley but unlike my dislike for Dooley day one, I am willing to see Jones in action. He better be a helluva a recruiter but as with Dooley you are what your record is. Can't coach up 2 stars like you can in the Big East, just ask how his two stars did against a weak, poorly coached UT.

Ding Ding Ding
We have a winner.
Dumbest post of the thread!!

Always has to be some drama or motive.
How could anyone turn UT down, especially a former player. Dang, that CBJ is a smart man to plan all this.
Geeeezzzzz, get a life.

Oh, and by the way 06, I hear Gruden owns land in East TN!! :salute:

Because he wanted to tease all the fans and kick 'em while their still butthurt over not getting Gruden.

always been a fan of tee's, but he lost some ground with me over this by the way he handled it. If he knew going in that he was staying at usc then that's exactly what he did was tease the fans.

Considering how Tee's boss stiffed UT after 1 year, it's sad to see somebody respecting Kiffin enough to be that loyal. Then again, I think Tee's wife weighed heavily in the decision. Regardless, good luck to Tee and GBO.

I disagree. It'd take me a year to convince anyone of this but I'm going to say it anyway. If we had been running a 4-3 defense with a different DC, Dooley might actually still be here. The problem was never really offense, clock management, or play calling, it was all defense. Nothing lost us games more than that terrible experiment of a 3-4 defense.

That said, CBJ has already changed the vols for the better with going back to a 4-3 defense.

If he knew that from the beginning, then why even entertain UT at this time?

Maybe because his heart is so orange it caused him to have a moment of doubt. At one point in my career, my alma meter flew an employee across the country to interview me. I had just signed a contract with my employer of that time. I agreed to the interview because I really did want to return to my alma meter. I had applied 6 months and kept hearing their RIHC (recruiting interviewing and hiring committee) hadn't made a decision. I got offered an interview at another college and was offered the job right after. I was given 4 days to decide. I informed my alma meter, heard nothing so took the job. Lo and behold the employee flies in. My response was that if after signing a contract I left, what kind of person does that make me. If I did that to my new employer, how could my alma meter be sure I wouldn't do that to them too. He looked at me and said, "I'll be sure to tell them we missed out on a honest person."

Was I tempted to accept their offer? You bet! Even with the moving van on the way to my new home. But I knew your word should mean something especially when you put it on a contract. Some people still try to live a life of integrity, some don't even know or care what integrity is.

Well, if what Basillio says in his blog is true, then I don't blame Tee for staying at SC. He got a pay bump to $500,000. We only offered $350,000, which is plenty for a WR coach. Also we did not exactly put the full court press on for him.

What is your point. The point here is that he knew before hand that he wasn't coming. That's fine and I have no ill will gor T. But it was handled in a way that was ebbrassing to the University that he is suppossed to love. Now that's imply isn't respectful to the Vols and has Kiffen written all over it!

For all you know he was CBJ made him an offer that would have penalized him financially and/or offered no future continuity of employment and worse. So he tried to let us down gently but didn't have a lot of leeway under the circumstances. Point is you aren't privy to what went down between CBJ and Tee and no one else on this board is either. Advice: Shut up until you actually know something.

And that's ok but he had made that promise before he made a trip to Tenn; therefore, being a man of his word he knew before hand that he wasn't going to accept a job here. If he respects Tenn that much he could have declined the job before making a big news splash and further emberassing the Vols. IMO just more of Kiffen's media play crap

The article doesn't mention it, but I bet he got a raise. If so, he played his Alma Mater for more money and that is not honorable IMO. Does anyone know if he received a raise?

My Gawd...

Tee wanted to come but his wife vetoed it. She wanted to stay in LA. Who can blame her. He brought them hoping to change their minds.

Just trying to make Tee look as bad as possible? Maybe you should consider edited your post. Below is the entire statement not cut and pasted to try and make Tee look bad.

"I was very honored to be offered a position on Coach Jones' Tennessee staff," Martin said in a statement released by the school. "I truly believe he will do an outstanding job with the Vols program. My decision to remain at USC was the toughest I have ever had to make because Tennessee is such a special place to me.

"At the end of the day, I am a man of my word. I promised Coach Kiffin when I was hired at USC that I had goals I wanted to accomplish here. We still have work to do here to reach those goals. I see a great future at USC with the players on our roster and the recruits we have coming in.

"I have so much love and respect for Tennessee. But at this time, the right decision was to continue at USC and I am looking forward to doing that."

Much better, now we have the full statement with all the fluff included. Now, let's ask why he even took the time to fly here if this was going to be the outcome. The problem is that his statements concerning staying at USC do not match his actions (flying to Knoxville). IMO, Martin and UT just could not reach an agreement, or he saw something he didn't like.

I see Kiffin bungling the season again next year, and getting fired. That's a fine goal, indeed. May UCLA play Rocky Top next year after they beat your Condoms again.

If I had the $$ I would personally make a multi million donation to UCLA just to hear them do that. Especially for Spliffin.

$500,000 in LA is like $300,000 here. $375,000 here would have been a HUGE raise. People that haven't been there don't need to comment on the $$.
