Tennessee Buzz: Candidates To Watch - Kendall Rogers

Szefc reminds me of Butch Jones.....who may end up being great for the program now that the learning curve is over.

Why?

He's been to two super regionals. I can't understand why that doesn't mean much to many around here.

Why do you guys like Bakich over Szefc?

Bakich has a 204-200 overall record and his teams at Michigan have not shown a lot of improvement. Szefc is 351-234 (142-99 at Maryland). His record is not the best, but his teams seem to improve and he has taken Maryland to new program heights. I also do not like the idea of hiring somebody with no head coaching experience. I think our baseball program is at a critical stage and a good coach could quickly get us going in the right direction. Anyways, I do not keep up with college baseball outside of Tennessee, what is it about these guys that we should like?

And it still blows my mind that Serrano was not able to win here. I was so excited when we announced him as our coach. Even after going 157-163 here, he still has an overall record of 446-302.

Alabama did not waste a lot of time in naming Bohannon to replace Goff.

They don't waste a lot of time doing anything...identify who you want...Get.

Whether it was the AD, or the baseball coach.

It seems we need to deliberate amongst factions. It is what it is I guess.

I like Bakich only because he took over Maryland when they were in the complete dumps. He went from like 17 wins his 1st year to over .500 by his 3rd and final year, all while in the ACC. The upperclassmen on the 2 super regional squads under Szefc, were Bakich's recruits. Once those SR's cycled out they came back down in 2016.

Bakich's loss total has gone down for 5 straight seasons at Michigan and his win total up every year, save for last year when they played their fewest number of games in his tenure there. I'm not sure how that's not showing improvement. He's averaged 40 wins over the last 3 years at one of the most northern schools in the country. His tenures at Vandy and Clemson are valuable in the sense that he has Southern connections and understands what it takes to compete in big time baseball leagues. His time up north is also valuable IMO because he can do what UofL, UK and to an extent Arkansas have done and sell the best northern kids on coming south where it's warmer yet still be relatively close to home. UofL has a roster dominated by kids from the southern, Midwest and Arkansas is starting to do the same with kids from Missouri and Illinois.

I'd hire Bakich simply based on this quote from his hiring at Maryland, "patience is not a virtue of mine. We don't have any time for that $hit."

In the mix...not top of the list...I hope.

In my opinion, he seems a better option than most on the list from page 1. Solid record at TTU, taken the program to new levels, consistently in the top of their conference, and have great national numbers in BA, HRs, etc. That list is garbage. A bunch of mediocre coaches that have not done anything spectacular and are not much above .500. Burke is unknown since he has no coaching experience. Calvi may be the best as up and coming, but still risky. Szefc seems to be the safest pick.

Hopefully there is an ace in the bag. I'd really like to see Currie hit a homerun with this hire.

yes!

I've recited Bakich's resume so much I'm starting to sell myself on him. I don't think I'd complain about he or Calvi at this point. Bakich's attitude is what really appeals to me. He sounds like a grinder and no BS guy.

"I know it sounds odd, but wins and losses have never been important to me. I wanted to change the attitude of this team first and foremost, and you can already see that happening. Our seniors have done a great job of leading this team, and the transformation has already been made."

"In 2004, Vanderbilt increased its batting average from .258 the previous season to .304, the largest jump in school history."
