I am just so underwhelmed with the names that are coming up with this search. A lot of the names are guys who are currently leading teams that are barely above .500 themselves. If we go with a guy like that, then we are just accepting mediocrity.
The only names being mentioned that I am interested in are Bakich, Calvi, Mazey, and maybe Szefc. I think a guy like Burke and Lawson are too risky for where the program is at right now. Riser seems to be a very young, up-and-coming coach, but would be a risk too. I do not really like the idea of Holbrook because we would just be hiring a guy that another SEC program did not want. Plus he has not had good results this season. But I guess expectations for Tennessee baseball and South Carolina baseball are different, sadly.
This could be a make or break hire for the baseball program. I know we do not have the most prestigious baseball program, but Tennessee is a traditional SEC school, Knoxville is a great city, good facilities that will only get better with Currie, and we can pay a lot of money. That is if we decide to actually open up the pocket book, which is a big if, but Serrano was making a good paycheck that put him near the top of the SEC. We need to go get a winner.
I'm pretty disappointed as well, and if they go the Lawson/Burke route, it's going to be hard for me to be as hardcore regarding baseball. I'll move on to casual fan status. Budget doesn't seem to be the issue, but how they spend the money may be the problem...I mean just the simple fact that they won't stream all the games, when you're losing the kind of money they are losing, I mean, what's another 100 Grand when your losing 4M...Instead, we're the only school not showing the games. I know occasionally Missouri and Vanderbilt might not show a midweek game, but we didn't see one this season.
I suppose there are powers that be that want Burke or Lawson, but from what I've heard and read, he wants to interview others as well...or Lawson or maybe Burke would already have the job, so I take some solace there.
This past season was one of the most difficult seasons I have followed short of the season Fulmer was fired and the loss to Wyoming...that's not just disappointing, it's like Chinese water torture.
You start out realistically without very high expectations...they get on a little roll in the non conference portion of the schedule, but deep down your waiting for it to fall apart, hoping it won't but a nagging feeling that when the SEC season starts...and then the season is over in the first two weeks.
I mean, when the product on the field is this bad and on top of it, and maybe it's just perception and not reality, it doesn't feel like the school is doing everything they can, like they aren't really interested in having to do the work involved if the sport became more popular, mediocre is fine, we're fielding a team that should be enough...it's hard to be excited for a full season.
