Tennessee Buzz: Candidates To Watch - Kendall Rogers

Skeptical of reports by Kendall Rogers and Aaron Fitt that Serrano is a serious contender for the Virginia Tech. The guy they just fired has a better conference record in the ACC than Serrano had in the SEC. And Rogers and Fitt have a six year history of uncritically passing along all of Serrano's pre-season hype about how good his UT teams would be. They've also repeated the Pro-Serrano talking point about how much talent he has left behind for his replacement--a meme Serrano pushed in his post game interview Friday.

I like Kevin McMullen and Alan Dunn in this list. I just worry about the hiring of Chris Burke or Todd Helton because they have no prior coaching experience in college. I like Burke and Helton but just feel that would be a huge risk to hand over the head coaching keys to one of them.

Just an awful list other than McMullen and Dunn. Hoping that is a media member that is clueless.

Serrano is a well thought of name nationally. From your post lately it seems you want to be hung at the courthouse on Saturday morning but the one with the black eye after this is the program not he at least nationaly.

The best thing that could happen for our program would be for Serrano to have quick success at his next stop. Yep, it would be a black eye, but maybe it would wake some people up.

I was at the game with Missouri Friday evening sitting a row in front of a current Athletic Department long time employee (I think with "director" in his title, but not the Athletic Director). He was having a conversion with someone and I heard the phrase, "Alan Cockrell wants the job". I was sitting in front so couldn't see which one said it.

I wonder if Alan Cockrell ever completed his degree.

They bent the rule for Serranno with college coaching experience but would they bend it for Cockrell

Plus, is Tennessee really going to go down the "Yankees Assistant Coach" path again?

I don't think he has, and I am not sure that Todd Helton has completed his degree work yet, either. Both left after their junior years and haven't lived back in Knoxville for any extended period of time until Todd returned within the last year. I know that much of the work can be done online now, but there still has to be a good bit of work done on campus. I heard Ron Slay talk about that in a radio interview last week.

Another reason why it's best not to pay too much attention to the "lists" you see online. Many of those "candidates" with pro ties and no college experience may not meet the educational requirements.

Someone mentioned Greg Lovelady earlier and after reading is resume I am interested in him being a candidate and possible replacement for CDS. What does everyone else think??

I like Lovelady but if we went that route his buyout for another job needs to be hemmed up tight. If his success continues, I imagine he'd be #1 on Miami's list when Jim Morris hangs it up. In addition to UCF being a better job than Wright State and closer to home, that move was likely as much about positioning himself for the UM job as anything.

Didn't Serrano wind up earning an online degree before being hired? Phoenix or something?

By him being the so called interim coach it would not surprise me and I would love it as well.

I am sure the returning players would love having someone they are familiar with sticking around. The other assistant coach MUST BE A DEDICATED PITCHING COACH!
No more of this HC/pitching coach garbage.

I'm guessing we get a promotion within the staff now or a top assistant from a SEC program. Then I'm thinking a current head coach from another school or a coach with no previous experience in the college field. By that I mean Burke or Helton.

Yes.

Our coaches need the same tools, data, and support staff that other top programs have. Great programs use data and very detailed information about their own players and the competition to improve and win.

KY is not the only team doing this. They are just a really good example this year and a very fair yardstick because they do not have great weather year round. They do not have huge metro centers to pull tons of talent. They are know for a fan base that loves another sport, and their current facilities are not anywhere near the top of the SEC...(until their new house is finished 2019). But, they do have state of the art video and digital information systems. They do have smart coaches who can use very specific and detailed information to develop players.

UT can and should do the same thing.

Reading around places I am starting to think the Maryland guy is the top of Curries list. The guy over at InsideTennessee is well tied in with baseball and he thinks that.
