Tennessee Lady Vol News

Hoping for great things for the Lady Vols in the NCAA Tournament this year, but no matter what happens, we have an exciting team lined up for next year.

We have 5 (including Tess) Freshmen that got invaluable experience this year, back as much improved Sophomores next year, and still have Tamari, Horston, Marta, and Walker on the roster, also Emily and Jessie, plus newcomers Powell (an experienced point guard), and a highly rated Freshman shooter in Pissott coming to play.

If our team does really well next year, it won’t surprise me a bit.
We really did overachieve early on in the season. My expectation has been and is that we reach the Sweet Sixteen this tournament.

Not to pass the blame - she was obviously inside the vehicle and passed out - but I have to believe she would have been with some one (and someone she trusted) just before driving away. I just don’t see Miss Miles dropping by the liquor store, grabbing a bottle, then just driving off …all alone. I’m not suggesting she was with older teammates, but the origin of this near-tragic night has me perplexed. And a little bit angry.
I Love these Ladies!
What happened? Is this why BK was suspended for a game?

Horn buckle said the ladies were practicing really hard in practice and mad about the tournament. She also gave TK pointers on staying out of foul trouble. I’d like to see more Buck & 2MCcoverage including practice info on how people are looking. I love to hear Buck was there giving advice. I really hope TK and Candace have a good relationship and she asks her for pointers/has come to practice and given tips. If Horston comes back, anything is possible if they fix the little things.

Certainly not condoning what BK did…but let’s not act like we haven’t all made stupid choices at 18. Thank God she didn’t hurt herself or anyone else, but let’s not act holier than thou in this situation. He who is without sin, cast the first stone.
We all made gobsmacking stupid choices at 18. That’s why we can so easily identify them!😆

Completely agree!

Well, I can finally confirm that this matches the "inside information" I learned at the Miss State game but wouldn't reveal. I was only told "DUI" and that she was found passed out in a running car. Because no official announcement had been made, I hoped the info was faulty as rumors often turn out to be. Didn't want to fan the flames or unfairly hurt an innocent student's reputation.

It's also why I have refrained from making any comments about her in the weeks since. Although a firm believer in forgiveness, particularly for young people who often do stupid things, I have almost zero tolerance for anyone driving while intoxicated. Providentially, she didn't maim or kill anyone. This is like indiscrimately firing a weapon which could permanently injure anyone...children, parents, newlyweds, teammates, elderly, passengers, etc., not just the driver.

Someone here asked how badly the info I had heard could hurt us. At the time, I felt almost sick because I thought that if the info. was true, it would almost certainly mean a suspension for the rest of the season. I would not have been the least bit surprised if she had been dismissed from the team unless extenuating circumstances applied (as in someone had deliberately spiked her drink or drugged her).

I was hoping that the information was wrong or exaggerated even though the source was very credible. Unfortunately, the details reported in the news release were even worse than what I was told.

Just very, very disappointed. Hope that she is getting the help she needs to make better decisions and the discipline she needs to make amends and rebuild trust. Pulling for her as a person to use this incident to learn from and perhaps to help others avoid making serious mistakes that could have permanent, even fatal, consequences.

Wow!! Just one of those palm to forehead “What were you thinking!!” moments. Thank God no one was hurt!!
Hopefully a lesson learned. If it was one of mine that car would be home in the garage or maybe sold actually!!

She very well may have her license suspended.

I was pretty responsible when younger and was never a drinker (particularly after observing the drunken behaviors of others), but I distinctly remember decades later several incidents during which I endangered myself and passenngers (including the teenage children of family friends) by recklessly speeding just to show off. In one instance, I almost lost control of the car and could easily have rolled it...and this was before mandatory seat belts. Scared me badly at the time and still makes me ashamed of my stupidity. Also thankful that God kept me from hurting myself and others. Just pray that she has had a similar epiphany.

I mean, the cops had to punch through the windshield to get her to respond. That's not drunk driving, that's passed out driving!

Just to emphasize the severity of the incident, the article says that she remained asleep even while an officer broke the rear driver's side window and actually climbed through it in oder to put the car into park. This after the car had rolled into the side of a building.

Very glad Brooklynn or no one else were injured. Will she have to face a disciplinary board like Tea Cooper did for fighting. I remember Holly couldn't prevent Tea from being expelled. We had a QB recruit in a similar situation who eventually got expelled or dismissed from the team two or three months later.

Wow, the BK mess is horrible. I went to college during the sex, drugs and rock n roll era and took ridiculous driving chances and was stupid lucky, just like BK. I drove on some out there stuff, I'm ashamed to say, but never unconscious (that I know of)! A friend's 20 yr old son died a couple of years ago of alcohol poisoning, similar circumstances, found in his car. As deeply unconscious as it appears BK was, she could have been headed in that direction.

Way back in high school, young drunk drivers were made to sit in the ER at the local trauma hospital and watch car wreck victims come in. I always emphasize to my kids, it's not just your life, what if you have to live with killing or maiming someone? Especially now with Uber. IMO the decision to get in that car and drive has to be investigated and heavily counseled with her. Also, who was with her? Who let her do this?

On the surface, one game suspension seems totally inadequate, but we don't know all the circumstances and presumably KJH does. But I'm pretty sure BK has only begun to be held accountable, legally and with UT. Makes Zaay smoking a little weed look like child's play.

I've gone back and forth on this since it broke yesterday. But agree that a one game suspension is inadequate based on the report and what was in it like not being responsive, breaking the window and rolling across Cumberland Ave before hitting Aspen Heights Apt. A positive result in what could have been a tragic situation to Miles or someone else. 3-4 games would have sent a message to the team, Miles, culture and legacy of the name. We rarely have seen LV being put in the negative spotlight like Hornbuckle and Horston while in school. Like you stated, it's more about the tragic consequence that could have occurred.

The QB was arrested 2 times in 3 months if you are referring to Salter.

She got charged with underaged drinking so how did she get the alcohol in the first place? That could very well be the reason for just a one game suspension. It didn't have to be a teammate just someone she knew that influenced her into this bad decision. We shouldn't judge the penalty unless we knew the entire story. Would hate to see anyone lose their scholarship for one bad decision especially enabled by an older person. I would say regardless of her current penalty Brooklynn better have learned a hard lesson because I am sure as a Lady Vol she is on a ledge with one foot already hanging off. Coach Harper has been very forgiving of a first offense not so for a second.

The incident occurred at 3 AM after the team had returned home from the SC game. I suspect that any drinking may have happened at an off-campus party, but that's just speculation. That's the most frequent situation for weekend drinking in these college situations.

I'd also think that athletes have a curfew, particularly in-season.

Poor BK. I bet she feels terrible to see her incident played out again to go along with all the self righteous indignation and speculation from posters some of which are not even fans. If you were in her shoes, would you want your mistakes played out in a forum court of law?

If I were her, I'd rather face a forum court than a criminal court during a trial for vehicular manslaughter. She could easily have killed someone else.

What is the university's policy on cases like this? Does she face other disciplinary actions?

I don’t know what disciplinary actions have or will be taken because it’s none of my business. I believe it’s between BK and the coaching staff.

If I were in Bk's shoes, what old farts on a fan forum think would be the very least of my worries. In general, I'm sure it's embarrassing (I hope) as it should be. Maybe that can be a deterrant. This is very serious and could have been so much worse.

UT used to have like a student court or tribunal or something and I'm sure there's administrative and athletic department determinations as well.

I really wish the best for BK and hope this is a big lesson. I bet it is.
