Vols are who they are. A step below the big boys so to speak. UCONN, SC, LSU and it will take a massive leap to get at their level. Subpar coach...players who are good....not great. Vols will be good enough to make it to tourney but always finish like 3rd or 4th in sec....unless and until they get top tier coach like a Mulkey...Geno or Staley. KJH is just average run of the mill coach..and her teams reflect that. Kellie is pretty and nice...etc etc...bur nowhere near the level of coach they need to get to elite level. Imo.
This year UT definately could have beaten LSU at home. By next season, when LSU visits UT, I would expect LSU will be stronger and deeper. Nobody knows yet what UT will look like next year, but odds are heavy they will be outgunned by Mulkey in 2024.
I think Key has been ill for the last two years. She has blocked a lot of shots, but the rest of her game has suffered. I hope she can come back healthy and play up to her potential. I hope one of the pro teams will take a shot on her and she does well2021 Key is orders of magnitude better than Hollingshead. But the good thing is that we can play them both at the same time.
Powell has 82 assists this year to 40 turnovers. She is far and wide the best assist to turnover guard we have. Horston is like 82 assist to 66 turnovers and Walker is like 86 assists to 51 turnovers. Powell is a new guard in a new system. There is a lot of growth that can be had between now and next season to improve on that number.I'm not really hoping Powell returns if she does maybe she will be better. What she has been able to do this year gives me no reason to be concerned as to whether she returns or not. If we can't find some guards much better than her or anyone we have now were in huge trouble anyway. If I were really hoping for someone to return it would be a healthy Key and Horston to forgo the WNBA. We would still need some elite guards, but those two returning would lighten the load of who we have to get in the portal. That would cut it to about four or five players most of them need to be elite guards.
Hollingshed is a Stretch 4 with a nice stroke from the 3 point line. She is playing the 5 out of need this year.2021 Key is probably never coming back
In today’s basketball there’s almost never going to be a situation where playing two centers at the same time is advantageous unless they’re both world class players like Boston/Cardoso at SC
You need someone who can score some points at the point guard position like the elite team have if you want to be an elite team.Powell has 82 assists this year to 40 turnovers. She is far and wide the best assist to turnover guard we have. Horston is like 82 assist to 66 turnovers and Walker is like 86 assists to 51 turnovers. Powell is a new guard in a new system. There is a lot of growth that can be had between now and next season to improve on that number.
Certainly wishing Tamari the best in every way. Sadly it is not a given that she will be healthy enough to play next year or in the future. If Key is healthy she'll be drafted and signed. Or she could try the portal and see what sort of interest there is first from a potentially top ten team in 2024. Not sure what she has to gain by staying in what looks to be a down year for the Lady Vols.
SC and LSU will ce the cream of the SEC next year. The returning Lady Vols will need to improve or add one or two portal pickups to avoid slipping further down in the pack.
