Tennessee Lady Vol News

How is Ole Miss ranked that high??

They have played and lost to USC, UCONN and NC State and all were reasonably close and on neutral courts or away. The net counts against you way less if you lose to good teams by close margins on the road.

I really don’t like that aspect of it, a loss is a loss. Only thing their schedule proved so far is they can’t beat good teams.

Interesting. I wonder if even less contact should be allowed?
Bodies flying around in a faster paced game leads to more contact. Refs trying to control it by calling more fouls leads to a foul fest and longer games. I dunno, a conundrum. Lots of injuries for sure. I'd have no problem with allowing more scholarships. That would probably lead to an even more active transfer portal. It wouldn't help with injures, but what would you think about increasing the foul limit to 6?

Getting beat at their own game today......and no defense at all both full and half court.

This is incorrect. Oklahoma actually had fewer points per possession that Tennessee did; Oklahoma ended with .97 points per possession (pretty good considering how good they are offensively; they scored more points per possession against Texas than they did us), while Tennessee ended with exactly 1 points per possession. Oklahoma turned the ball over on 35% of their possessions.

Oklahoma had 41 fastbreak points, Tennessee had 30 points off turnovers.

A bad defensiv performance compared to what we need? Yeah, sure. "No defense"? No, that's just ignoring 31 turnovers in 89 possessions, many of which were entirely forced.

You can't just not count a defensiv stop in the backcourt because it's in the backcourt. A stop is a stop no matter where it is. It's even better when it's a stop that immediately becomes 2 points.

I think it is the loss we needed, and it came at the most beneficial point in the schedule.

It's early in the conference season.
It doesn't hurt us terribly come March.
The ways in which we lost it confirm what the coaches have been telling them.
Players can see how resiliency when their shots weren't falling would have made this a win.
Players can see how improved free throw shooting would have made this a win.
In four days we face another top team that excels at rebounding.

The measurement of their progress over the next 4 days will be clear.

Do y'all think we'll move much in today's rankings? It feels like a lot of voters have the "lose and get bumped down" mentality, but that doesn't feel warranted here. I know Oklahoma lost a close one to Texas in their prior game, so honestly it seems like both teams should stay about where they are at #9 and #15.

IMO, I don't think we move unless people penalize us for previous seasons when we underperformed. We stayed stagnant in the NET rankings, but I know that doesn't take into account all the people who doubt this team or the style of play. This is also the second coach who didn't question the effectiveness of our playing style, so I think the conversation around our style may also shift if we can win more SEC games.

I was just coming here to say that the NET rankings got shook up after yesterday's games, but we stayed steady at #17 (and Oklahoma actually dropped one spot!). Vanderbilt tumbled 7 spots to #20 after their home loss to Kentucky and Ole Miss only dropped 3 spots to #18 after losing to TAMU. Florida St. dropped a few spots after a closer-than-expected win vs. Syracuse but is still Q1 (same with Iowa, who held steady at #30). Richmond moved back up a couple spots to #36.

We also didn't drop at all at HHS (still #11) though we did drop to #10 (from #6) at Massey. We stayed at #19 at Bart Torvik.

Vs. LSU, HHS has them as the 0.5 point favorite, but Massey (1 point) and Bart Torvik (0.2 points) favor us.

Looks Like Ole Miss Dropped Out and Oklahoma and our Lady Vols stayed the same in the WER Top 25.. They even had Ruby as the cover

Yep, glad you called that out. I understand why people talked about the style of play after Kim got hired, but it's been such a topic of conversation for 8+ months now that I'm already tired of it. If you ask me, it's pretty clear that the limitation previously was just the talent she was able to recruit. It's clear that she can pull top talent here, and with every game that passes I'm more convinced that she can win against great competition.

Also, good to see that we more or less stayed put. A win against LSU would be an incredible boost!

Agree with most of that, if not all of it. I would like to add something to this conversation, but it won't be easy for many to accept.

After watching this UT team play yesterday against what I consider their first true NCAA tourney quality opponent thus far (FSU and Iowa, if they make the tourney, will be early outs), I was surprised how badly and how often the offense breaks down into individual ISO play in the half-court offense. That will need to be fixed. Even Spencer mentioned it in the post-game interview, "Four players stand around and watch one player go one on one" (or one vs two) against their opponent. That won't break your back in the SEC for the majority of games, because this LV team has many other positives going for it obviously and will outclass most SEC teams normally. But come tournament time it would be a different story.

I have shared my very positive outlook for this LV team with everyone. I believe they will be top 3-4 in the SEC this year. I still think that. But something has to change in their half court offense before March or the season will end quickly in the tournament. NCAA games are different. They're a little slower, more pressure, more physical, and more reliant on the half-court game. And most of the tourney teams will be proficient at handling the press.

Once we beat FSU and Iowa, I shut up about style of play. I had my doubts, and those two games (plus the incoming recruiting class) put them to bed. My main goal for the season was simply to keep the tournament streak alive, so the fact that we are winning, ranked, and having fun is all gravy. It's also really fun to watch when it's working!
