Tennessee @ Mississippi State (October 13, 2012)

Please don't lump me in with the guy talking "jumbotron smack"... Not my goal here at all. :banghead2:

Just messing with ya engie. One of my son's best friends plays baseball for Miss State so nothing against the you or the bullys. Billy Cartman is just too much fun to resist!

We are currently a lot better than Tennessee which doesn't happen that much so we as State fans need to let them know who is boss while we can.

According to who? When was the last time state beat UT in football?? Im honestly curious because Im too lazy to look it up, but since you are pretty good an throwing out non-existant stats, I thought you might come up with something.

It was 1994.

Dude, you're just scared to talk smack. We are currently a lot better than Tennessee which doesn't happen that much so we as State fans need to let them know who is boss while we can.

I'm not "scared to talk smack." I find it distasteful to go to an OPPONENT'S forums in order to smack talk them. In a conference-based forum, sure back-and-forth is fair game. I go by the mantra that if you wouldn't do it in real life, don't do it on the internet. I wouldn't go to Neyland popping my mouth off for the same basic principle that I won't here.

We're not in ANY position to smack talk anyway. What have we done? Nothing yet. Talk it AFTER we actually do something. You don't smack talk a toss up game anyway IMO. It's a real good scenario for sticking your foot in your mouth. The last time I participated in preseason smack was in 2001, when before game 1 Lee Corso called us "a quarterback away from national title contender" coming off 3 tremendous seasons(by State standards). It was a long, humbling f'n decade after that.

What's your take on Jimmy John's sandwiches?

I've committed a crime here... Never had one! The only 2 locations in Mississippi are in enemy territory. One in Oxford, one in Hattiesburg. I travel hwy49 alot, so I'll grab one in Hattie soon:)

A JJ's in enemy territory should be treated like an embassy. You'll be safe there.

I just like to have a little fun when we are good. Tennessee fans are the best. I've honestly never heard anything negative about them. ETA, I really do think we will beat the vols pretty bad this year tho

You're so good at this you're borderline believable at times. Do you list this as a skill on your resume?

Again, it's a 2 for 1 with Troy. They come to Starkville in 2013 and 2015. It's our preferred scheduling method and will continue to be until the program becomes sustainable on a higher level, at which point we'll consider doing home/home series with BCS-level opponents. We won't pay for an 8th home game at this point, when we can get 2 for 1s for free.

So, get ready. We will be @ UAB next year, @ South Alabama in 2014, @ USM in 2015, and @ La Tech in 2016.

Our previous OOC scheduling was a nightmare. We played bigtime teams every year, and it kept us home a bunch of times in bowl season. What does our program have to show for that? NOTHING. Helped us in NO way. In the recent past, our OOC:

@Houston, Ga Tech, Houston, @ Ga Tech, @ West Virginia, West Virginia, Oregon, @ Oregon, BYU, @ BYU, OK St, @ OK St, @ Baylor, Texas, @ Texas

It seems like paying someone to come to Starkville would net more money than giving up a home game once every three years to avoid the payout in the other two years.

That's how I feel too.
I compare it more to a sports bar than the stadium though.
Would you walk into a sports bar in Knoxville, full of UT fans, by yourself, sit down at the bar, and then say...

I think it's possible MSU can win this game.
But, if UT's WRs and QB are healthy, unlike last year's SEC slate, you'd have to be completly blinded by MSU homerism to expect the blowout you're calling for.
As the other Bulldog said, this is realistically a toss-up game, at this point. This is one of those games that neither side should be chalking up as a W or L in the preseason. We're not 2012 Alabama, but we're not the 2012 WKU Hilltoppers that you're making us out to be.

I don't know the exact numbers, so I can't confirm this for a fact...

But I've heard that we come out behind in the current 55,000 seat stadium, but will be ahead in the 65,000 seat expansion... So we will probably stop this after its complete in 2014. Already some scuttlebutt that we're in talks for a home and home with KState around 2016 or so. Hopefully the old man retires again by then!

If that's true, then the operating costs of running a home football game must be larger than I thought. 50,000 tix x 40 bucks = 2 million.

A solid gamer playing with MSU on EA Sports' NCAA 13 might be able to crush the Vols, but that's it.

I know Tennessee has a bigger stadium but it is not near as electrifying as Davis-Wade is. Especially the last few years, and I can promise you that. And I hope you realize that your precious little Bray has never played to the tune of 50,000+ cowbells.

I'm as qualified as anyone on here to talk about this bull excrement of a post as both my parents are MSU alum and I grew up going to Davis Wade and have seen near as many games there as I have in Neyland....you sir, are full of sh**. I mean like your eyes are so brown they're almost black.

Davis-Wade CAN get loud but, as you pointed out, it has MUCH more to do with Cow Bells than it does the fans. I've been to several Egg Bowls and even witnessed the huge fight before the game back in the late 90's...that game was probably the loudest I've heard it get and it doesn't even begin to describe how loud Neyland can get.

Neyland literally had the ground shaking after the '98 Florida game. There have been many games over the years where I've had to yell to the person sitting right next to me, just to be able to hear them.

As for Bray not playing to the tune of 50K cowbells....you're right, but he's been to legitimately loud stadiums that put Davis-Wade to shame....and they don't need noise makers to be loud.

Agreed, for the most part. A lot of the sound escapes from the ends of DWS... It doesn't have the rumble/reverb of the monster bowl stadiums like Neyland. This will change "somewhat" when it horseshoes, especially with the jumbotron and Seal building helping to hold sound in the other side...

Bray won't be effected by the cowbells. We're getting pretty good at self-policing under the "cowbell compromise" of not using them during plays. It's actually a pretty sweet transition from the bells to yelling when the QB comes to the line of scrimmage. The yelling "seems" louder due to the pitch difference between vocals and bell ringing.

Here's an example of what I mean, although of course these videos never do actual noise justice....

Funny...my dad actually tried to get me to go to that game.

I'll always have a soft spot for Starkville and MSU. If I had a 2nd team, it would most definitely be them, but to say that Davis-Wade is louder or more electrifying that Neyland is as biased and asinine a statement as I've heard...and that's not a slap against State, it's the truth.

Hell, I've heard both my parent's and my Uncle confirm it--and my Uncle has been a season ticket holder for State for over 20 years. I grew up going to DWS, not Neyland...and I grew up outside of Nashville. It's no contest, DWS on a really good day can come close to Neyland...if we're playing Ohio or MTSU or....if we're getting blown out (ugh)--which unfortunately has happened too much over the last 5 years.

I'm agreeing with you on that, no doubt...

It's really pretty simple math IMO. 100,000 vocal cords > 55,000 vocal cords. Cowbells are good for a headache, but they just aren't the same kind of "loud".

Unless the 55,000 are in Oregon, in which case the comparison goes out the window. Autzen is the most incredibly loud thing I've ever heard(went in 2002)...and I've been to Baton Rouge at night too...

location
Davis-Wade Stadium
Starkville, MS
capacity: 55,082
Jumbotron: Biggest in the SEC, 2nd biggest in the world

With football season just around the corner I wanted to go ahead and get a prediction thread here on the NCAA forum that I will be able to bump after we beat y'all. And please don't get mad and upset when I bump it. I'm not going to rub it in or flame, I'm simply just going to type "bump."

prediction:
Mississippi State - 31
Tennessee - 10

Dooley's last season if we lose by 21 to Miss State

Depending on how September goes this could be a real buzz saw for the Vols. I think you take UT ATS as a road dog but no way is this game just a matter of lining up and posting a W because the helmets have an orange T. We will be coming off of a bye before a home game against Bama. This is one of those games we all fear that could be close and special teams kill us...
