Tennessee opens as a 5.5 point favorite over NC State

Which concerns me as Vegas is right way more than I am. I expected a double digit spread. What am I missing?

NC state has a very good qb and an electric playmaker that we don’t have anyone to cover.
They will scare the crap out of us most likely.

And it ain’t the “computers” as posted above - it’s what a whole lot of professional gamblers think the game ought to be. It’ll probably move up to 7.5 plus by kickoff - it’s already 6.5 on the sucker internet sites.

All that typed - VOLS by FIDDY.

Their “expert computer model” is only as smart as the person that programs it. Clearly they didn’t factor in WCU scoring 21 on NC St., or even watch the game, meaning we’re only 8 pts better than WCU against a very mediocre defense at best…according to this model. Hahaha. We’re gonna smoke them for 3+ hours into a tender wolf brisket.
Or we can put it this way

Chattanooga is the 9th ranked team in FCS

WCU was 20th

WCU was up at NC State 21-17 at the start of the 4th quarter.

We were up 45-0 with a little under 7 minutes left in the second quarter.

They project Tennessee only scoring 29 points. I don't believe they can hold us to that few points with our offense.

It's a computer, a sports betting site, a neutral site game. I am waiting on the human line and a better detailed analysis than a computer.
If you can find a -5.5 line then go for it.

The reality is that NC State is more than likely going to move the ball offensively better than Chattanooga, which should limit the number of times we have the ball, bearing fumbles and such. That implies less opportunity for scoring. I also believe NC State defense > Chattanooga defense.

Some of you seem to think Chattanooga is better than NC State and thus the score should be similar.

Saturday, we beat a team that we greatly outmatched on both sides of the ball. And now some are translating that into we can score that many points against any opponent.

I think we can and should win this game but need to come back to reality - Chattanooga was just not a good team.
We didn't play an starters after half time. Let that sink in for a moment. Coach basically emptied the bench.

I think this probably points towards their model not having enough quality data to have a good feel for either team.

With all due respect to WCU's defense, they ARE NOT as good as the Vol defense. WCU left 10 points on the field with a missed FG and a fumble at the NCST 9, NCST's D isn't special enough to stop our game. We will score and score often.

One man's very methodic view is another man's placid effort.

That electric vibrating game was fun at the time.

Vegas is right alot but due to volume they miss a lot too… they are likely wrong in this one ima hammer that 5.5 and I will likely walk it up to 9.5 for better odds on a couple of tickets…

I have a feeling it will be Tennessee-13.5 at game time
I agree. I’m surprised at the lines for this. Guess Vegas isn’t a true believer yet. Chattanooga aside Nico shredded one of ‘23’s best defenses in the bowl game. Maybe they expect NC State to bounce back next week.

I won’t be surprised to see Tenn to pull away in the second half on this one.

I don't understand that spread. If the oddsmakers think of Charlotte as being a home game for NC State, that's crazy. We will have twice as many fans there. At a minimum, the line should be Tennessee -10.5 .... I would still like Tennessee at -17.5.

NC St has a better O than UTC so they should be able to make a few drives which will keep Vol offense off the field and limit the # of possessions. Still think we pass the 29 pt pick but it may limit the scoring some. Still think high 30's low 40's.

Is that the halftime prediction?

Seems like there’s still a lot of tickets available in Charlotte.
i would thought a sellout with both schools not far away. NCSU 165 miles. UT 230 miles.
Are you seeing available tickets on the secondary market or directly from the schools/event?

Both NCSU and UT played vanilla so there are limits to how much can be predicted by comparison. That said, UTC has a better team than WCU this year. They're better coached.

It is likely that NCSU played flat but WCU competed. The Catamounts didn't look overwhelmed or particularly out-talented. For the most part, they looked like they belonged on the field with State.

UT did not play flat. UTC looked overwhelmed from the start. They actually have some talent but UT's O set the Vols up for success and the team made it happen. They executed.

Both attitudes go back to coaching and preparation.

NCSU will show up with something to prove. They will try to follow UTC's pattern and get the ball out quick. They will believe they can run the ball since UTC had some glimpses of success. IF they can stand up to getting punched in the nose right out of the gate then they might keep it closer than we expect. If the Vols get rolling... it will look like Hooker vs Mizzou a few years back.
