Tennessee Softball 2023

Surprised we picked up an infielder going to be some players that won't play much a lot of competition for second base and shortstop. She is a .370 hitter with good power, but I thought both Pannell and Faw were though unproven fit about the same as far as hitting and maybe a lot better defensively.

Well if this year proved anything you can never have enough good hitters.

One of them can always move to OF or DP

I hope it is pitchers maybe a catcher. We look in very good shape otherwise both infield and outfield.
I’d anticipate them getting 2 (maybe 3) pitchers and 1 catcher. Anything else like Mealer is depth…solid pickup don’t see her as a starter. Midweek MI, DP for sure.

They’re not taking somebody out of the portal for depth. Not room on the roster for it, don’t have money for it. If they take somebody from the portal, they’re planning on them being a big part of what this team does.

Depth isn’t a bad thing and I’d anticipate any player Tennessee takes is to be a big part of the team. Karen commented on needing a catcher in case G got hurt…I took the comment as depth.

I think most people don’t prefer G at C, but then again that’s a hard position to transition. I’d say bring in a C for depth, but most importantly competition. Obviously the statistical categories are important, but being able to manage a whole staff is something you can’t really train….you gotta have the personality for it

Nothing wrong with position competition

Mealer coming with 2 years left means to me she is in the mix somewhere. maybe who we used last year will have to beat her out as it should be. I love G and think she over achieved on defense but offense was a flop. Hoo was out of position at short with a weak arm but nobody beat her out so she like G cant hit except rarely. With Ele possibly coming in maybe next year we should get a transfer for one year left to play!

Her defense at catcher isn’t the issue, although I don’t think she is spectacular there.

UT needs 2 top level pitchers and Mealer will have to substantially improve her fielding or will be a liability.
