Tennessee Softball 2023

Did you ever get past step 3?

Worked in the yard today, and haven’t watched the videos you recommended yet, but I will. Will have to set aside a bunch of time to do it. You’re definitely the expert there, so I appreciate your video recommendations. 😀

About Sudoku, I use Joyo Studios (free) and have played 749 Master levels, and my best time is 4:37.

Just a little bit of motivation for us both.

NCAA Rules Committee Approves Changes for Upcoming Season
TOP STORIES D1Softball Staff - August 10, 2023

The NCAA Softball Rules Committee on Thursday announced 12 rule changes for the upcoming season, including allowing pitchers to disengage from the playing surface during delivery, simplifying obstruction and expanding video review.

Pitching – Step/Stride
  • Allows both feet of pitchers to disengage from the playing surface during the delivery when pushing off the pitcher’s plate. The pitcher’s pivot foot can become airborne with one push from the pitcher’s plate. However, pitchers would not be allowed to replant their pivot foot, resulting in pushing off from a second point and the pitcher being farther away from the pitcher’s plate.
Obstruction
  • Obstruction occurs when a defensive player, neither in possession of the ball nor in the act of fielding a batted ball, impedes a batter’s attempt to make contact with a pitch or impedes the progress of any runner who is legally running bases on a live ball. It can be intentional or unintentional.
  • While not in possession of the ball, it is obstruction if the defensive player:
    • blocks any part of the leading edge of first, second or third base or home plate
    • otherwise blocks the runner from advancing or returning to a base.
  • The defensive player is not considered obstructing if they are in possession of the ball or they are making a legitimate reaction to the trajectory of the ball after it is thrown. Additionally, if in the umpire’s judgement the runner would have clearly been out, then obstruction is ignored.
Expansion of video review
The panel approved expanding the scenarios where video review could be used.

The following additional scenarios may be reviewed:
  • Runners leaving a base too soon on tag-up plays, or if a runner missed a base.
  • Runners leaving a base too early before a pitch. (Note: This would be done only via a coach’s challenge, and the umpiring crew could not initiate this type of challenge even after the sixth inning.)
  • All home runs.
  • Catch/no catch in any situation.
  • Whether a batter was hit by a pitch.
Any of the listed reviewable items could be looked at if the action on the field results in a dead ball.

Time between pitches and action clock
The time between when the next pitch must be thrown will be reduced from 25 seconds (10/10/5) to 20 seconds. Also, teams will have the option of using a visible action clock.

The batter must still be ready to hit within 10 seconds, or a strike will be assessed to the batter. If pitchers do not begin their windup before the rest of the time expires, a ball will be awarded to the batter.

If teams choose to not have a visible clock, the umpires will keep the time on the field.

Previously, the batter and the catcher had 10 seconds to be in position to play after the pitcher receives the ball. Pitchers then had 10 seconds to bring their hands together while receiving a signal as to what pitch to throw. The pitcher then had five seconds to deliver the pitch.

Other rules changes
  • Allowing the use of a double first base on the field.
  • Requiring the fence distance in left and right fields to be 200 feet for new construction.
  • Removing the quarter-inch bat knob protrusion requirement to allow for a tapered/flared/cone bat handle.
  • Prohibiting assistant coaches from leaving the dugout or bullpen area to appeal, question or argue any play on the field.
  • Allowing one-way communication devices to be used during play.
  • Allowing the pitcher to throw to any base one time during warmups.
  • Allowing a postgame review of ejections that include a suspension.

Most umps were already not calling pitchers leaping a violation, so it is good that at least they are now making it legal for all pitchers and not just the select few scoff-laws.

I think the biggest thing slowing down games is batters going walkabout after every pitch. I hope the new timing restrictions put a stop to that.

Why that rule?? What's the purpose? I actually don't understand?

With a year under her belt do you see Pickens being better this upcoming season???
She has to be. She has the tools and the velocity to be exactly what we want her to be. Unfortunately, I do agree with what Lady Vols Fan said recently in that you are who you are. I’ve stated for years my concern was playing on a mediocre/tier 2 travel team and not winning a state championship. If she can develop a spin instead of going right side knees to head she’ll be another level better. Biggest jump is from freshman to Soph year, hardest jump is from HS to freshman

Cool thanks just now starting to appreciate the game!!!

Personally, I would expect her to be just because she should have more confidence. On the other hand, I believe the so-called "sophomore jinx" is a real thing, so only time will tell.
Nah, she is on an accelerated path, already had the soph jinx, just sped up a little. That's what I think. 😎 I hope.

my thoughts exactly -- my guess would be to practice a pick-off move, but that really makes little sense to me

That would be interesting. Wonder how it would work. If you get picked off, only because you left early. LOL!! Damned it you do or damned if you don't.

How is the weather where you are at?
Don't want to jinx it, Hot and storms a lot, Athens and Knox pretty close on weather wise.
Concrete jungles in Phoenix, Wildfires in Hawaii. I know, we've got more info than ever before, but still it's getting a little bit frequent, seems like.
Sorry, I wasn't trying to be that preachy.

Just heard Tennessee is going to Raleigh to play NC State in the Fall. Don’t know the dates
Is this true??
I vaguely remember reading something about that for softball -- it registered because the opponent is stronger than I expect in the fall (or maybe I just dreamed the whole thing 🙄)

Jami posted some instagram photos and in one of them Amanda Ahlin’s right knee was in a brace from mid-shin to thigh. Knee surgery I assume? Anyone with any news? If it was surgery I wish her a healthy recovery. At least with Faw and Mealer we have some IF depth but Amanda is a nice utility player. Zaida shoulder surgery, Mackenzie surgery on both feet, and Des, Gracie, and Taylor coming back from injury and surgeries last year. Our IF needs a break, please put a protective bubble around Boo.

  • Allowing the pitcher to throw to any base one time during warmups.

"Rationale: Currently, the pitcher is only allowed one throw to first base during warmups. This change is intended to allow the pitcher flexibility on how to use their warmup throw."

The above is a cut/paste from this doc:
https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/championships/sports/softball/rules/2024-25PRWSB_RulesChanges.pdf

Which is in the Updates section on this page:
Softball Rules of the Game

You can also download the current rulebook from the webpage above. 10.19 is the section on warmup pitches (10.19.2 looks like where this change will apply)

Not an expert here, just posting links for those who like digging through the docs, deciphering, and all that
