OU sports radio mentioned that the SEC has about 3 baseball teams with a NIL budget of 1 mill/yr. The Vola were one of them. What do you think your softball budget is?

South Carolina Hiring Ashley Chastain as Head Coach (UPDATED)

TOP STORIES Justin McLeod - June 11, 2024

Updated 6/11/24 3:27 pm ET w/ quote from Charlotte AD Mike Hill

Ashley Chastain will be the new head coach at South Carolina, sources confirmed to D1Softball.

John Whittle of The Big Spur first reported Chastain’s anticipated hiring. Per Whittle’s report, the hiring is pending Board of Trustees approval on Tuesday. The school has not yet announced the move.

Chastain spent the last five seasons as head coach at Charlotte, leading the Niners to conference championships in two different leagues in 2023 (Conference USA regular-season) and 2024 (American tournament). During her tenure in Charlotte, Chastain led the Niners to a 154-96 overall record and a 65-32 conference showing.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Charlotte athletic director Mike Hill said, “Our program enjoyed tremendous success under Ashley Chastain’s leadership, and we are grateful for the historic impact that she made. She transformed Charlotte 49er softball into a championship program that competes on the national stage. The opportunity to lead Charlotte softball is an attractive one, and a national search is already underway to secure the next leader of the Niners.”

During her tenure in the Queen City, Chastain developed a reputation for pulling off big wins against top-tier opponents and had a high success rate in the transfer portal.

Prior to Charlotte, Chastain had stints as an assistant coach at Ole Miss, Michigan State, and College of Charleston. A South Carolina alum, she spent three seasons on the Gamecocks’ pitching staff and a single season as a graduate assistant in Columbia following the end of her playing career.

South Carolina finished the 2024 season with a 36-24 overall record, an 8-16 conference mark, and were selected for the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season.

Chastain was at Ole Miss when Kaitlin Lee was there. 5'5 pitcher was phenomenal.

Does Tennessee take the Texas tech catcher with Nugent on the roster?
Not to catch. Kirkpatrick is the back up if Nugent cant go . If she is also a utility player i say yes. I understand she has two years but as i mentioned earlier the catcher starting on day one as i understand is the young lady from Farragut Ella Morrison is a stud both behind the plate and in the box as well. Just my thoughts and they mean nothing in the big scheme of things!

Kirkpatrick from what I have seen in 2 years is nothing more than a bullpen catcher and if she were to see innings it’ll be in a midweek game. I think we need a catcher, but multiple people said Morrison will be enrolling early so if that is the case no need to go after Wyckoff. Unless the staff has plans for her to play the outfield/backup first base.

I will say i think she is better than that. However somebody has to catch mid week games anyway!

One that jumps out as keeps landing in good spots well above her talent is Madi Balk. Her pitching coaches connections are greater than her skills in the circle. I don’t blame the kid for going to Washington, good opportunity for her. In the class of 2022 she was a second to third tier kid.

I do too, as it’ll have to be selective based on not a lot of space for us. This class doesn’t have the big names like years past it seems.
It is looking like we will have 22 players on the roster (if Elsa indeed does enroll early) and if I am correct that it is the limit that is able to travel. Seems like a lot so I would think the only players we would get is 1 pitcher for sure and 1 big hitter, but to your point so far this portal class is very underwhelming considering years past. To this point in the off-season I think some of the bigger names have been taken so it will be interesting to see how proactive Karen and staff are

Without the Covid fifth year, the pickings in the transfer portal are not going to be as plentiful as they were previously. The new normal is going to hope to get one or two contributors out of it, rather than three or four. The only teams that will be building from the portal will be places with new staffs.

Although we need a bat, I think the top priority has to be getting the best pitcher we can to help and take the load off Karlyn until we see how the two freshmen develop. As mentioned, there aren’t as many options as years past. Also if Elsa enrolls early that should help the roster. I think this is going to be an interesting team in that we don’t really know what to expect. The last two years we knew we were a top level team. But it’s nice to begin looking at next year with Karlyn as the ace.
