Tennessee Transfer Portal Targets

I saw on Rupp Rafters where some UK fans are rumoring that we have interest (and that it might be mutual) in Sahvir Wheeler. KY fans loved to hate on him but he has a lot of up side. The kid is #5 ALL TIME in assists in the SEC. I think they might lose their minds if he actually ended up coming here. Among point guards in the portal, he’s probably #1. Could be an interesting development. But the question is, would we want him?
Wheeler was really good at Georgia imo. He was ball dominant and in a situation better for his skill set than UK. I’m not sure he would be a good fit here but in the right situation I think he could once again he really good. Might have some attitude problems according to Rupp Rafters.

Would be a good JJJ replacement. He averages 19 points and 9 rebounds a game at Harvard. He shot 47% but only 29% from 3. Still though that shooting percentage from inside the arc is impressive.
My concern is the athleticism in the SEC vs the competition he faced in the Ivy League. Princeton had a great season, but let's be honest about the SEC night in and night out. Hey, while the kid had a few games where he was off a bit, he was very consistent all year long. He's got a shot and is willing to take it to the hoop. Got a sneaky way around the bucket. Of course, I said that about Key, too, and we see how that turned out.

Yeah that’s true. Just gotta roll the dice on some guys though. It may or may not work out every time.

Agree. I like the idea of Love to TN. My comparison was Key would shoot even when he missed, which was often.

He should, if he was open. You can’t make them if you don’t take them.

I can’t say I saw UNC a whole lot, but Love would take some questionable shots, not ones that were open. That comparison is not the same.

VQ's podcast indicated that UT has interest in Chris Ledlum from Harvard. New York kid. 6'6" forward. Looks like he's got wiggle down low and an outside shot. Supposed to be high energy. Not the quickest looking guy, but he can score the ball and might be that guy who can get that bucket in crunch time. We'll have competition for him tho. Indiana has made contact here as well. Had a bad shooting game(6-18FG/2-9 3pt) vs KU but still had 17pt/9 rebounds. 5 TO tho.

I mentioned him yesterday, he and Caleb Love are 2 drawing heavy interest from the staff right now.

I think KY bulked him up and he lost quickness which was his strength. I remember how hard it was to stay in front of him and guard him at Georgia.

Ledlum and Love. BJ hits the portal to make room. Get Santi back. Top 10 roster. A man can dream, right? 😃
I don’t want BJ to hit the portal. He has the tools to be a good player. We give up on guys too quickly sometimes. Don’t forget how small of a role Mashack had his freshman year.

Good gawd, NO! I'd rather pay Edwards NIL money to stay.
Lol so you want BJ over Sahvir? Sorry to hurt some Knoxville feelings, but BJ ain't the guy. All I heard about the guy coming into Tennessee was how he doesn't back down from anyone and competed with some of the best guards (including KC) in the country on the AAU circuit. Not sure how you go from that reputation to being scared and timid in his playing time. He will be a liability, just like this year, if he's PG2 behind ZZ. Dude was lost, especially on defense.

I’m not giving up on him, but if Santi does decide to come back someone will have to portal most likely, especially if we take 2 in the portal ourselves. I think there can be nuance to the conversation, you don’t have to actively wish someone to leave to understand that roster numbers might unfortunately dictate that depending on what the Seniors decide.

I’m sure more players will portal, but right now there seems to be only a handful of names to get excited about and all the usual suspects will be fighting aggressively for them. The rest seem to be like rolls of the dice and hoping for the best.

Tamar Bates 6'5" 193lbs (SO)

67 games, 2 starts and 17.6 mpg
5.1 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 0.9 apg, 0.4 spg
37% FG, 37.4% 3PT, 88.2% FT

He was a top 30 ranked player in the 2021 class seems like he just doesn't fit the style of play they wanna use (most their starters are all 6'6" or bigger)

Bum, didn't score a single point in their 2 tournament games. Hard pass.

... I also know, that he sat down and talked to each 23 senior Monday. The two with an open door have short windows to decide. ....

@bleedingTNorange @Stoerner Fumbles .... Thinking outside the box ...
Roster is the real limitation at 15, that and we can only offer athletic scholarships to 13.
However, in your opinion, can we get enough NIL and non-athletic scholarship money for JJJ and Santi and have them on the roster as non-athletic scholarship players?
This improves the roster without forcing other athletic scholarship players out the door. Consequently, it would mean not having room for the existing non scholarship players.
Thots????
If we could swing that ... I could see a run at a national championship.

No, I don't "know" this, but I do have a sound internet connection and the necessary skills to use various search engines. And with what I've read, the kid has talent AND a very involved father, but he's a volume shooter with a less than stellar make pct. His game revolves around...well...him. His decision making process is suspect and his game didn't "mesh" with his backcourt mates. If we were struggling as a program, taking a shot with a guy like this would be worth a roll of the dice. UNC decided he wasn't worth it and they moved on from him as much as he moved on from them. From reports, it appears that Indiana has reached out to Love and his father and there's "mutual interest".

We're in a really solid spot as a program right now. We've got momentum. I'd prefer to keep that going. Love might be an AA at his next stop or he might be fools gold. Just too many red flags and I don't see Barnes or UT being desperate enough to take that chance. I'd much rather have Menifield and/or McKnight. The armchair coach has spoken. ;)
See…I knew you knew it. You just had to verbalize it. I agree with you. 👌

In this hypothetical, I still highly doubt it. If there was this theoretical pot of money we could access and pay them a bunch of money to stay off scholarship, that doesn’t address the minutes issue on this roster, which is probably a bigger deal than the actual scholarship. You can only play 5 guys at a time. Having a roster of 15 players all expecting minutes in the rotation is a messy situation just asking for some people to be disappointed.

If both JJJ and Santi were to return, you’re going to see some people portal. There simply won’t be enough minutes to spread around to the young guards who want them.

There’s rule in place that make that pretty much impossible to do

Savhir Wheeler is an absolutely terrible PG. He is in the same mold as KD Johnson and Wendell Green Jr. For every game they play well, there will be 2 no shows and 1 game they are the REASON you lose. Both Cal and Bruce have been fooled by these guys and neither team has been very good with those guys running their teams. I would literally take anyone else over Wheeler. KY really only played well this season when he was hurt. I was very disappointe when I saw he would be out against us both times because he has just as good of a chance of losing a game for his team as making winning plays.
