Tennessee Transfer Portal Targets

The staff liked Mills, but they also knew Memphis had an inside track before he even entered the portal. He didn’t visit here as some have said, they were hopeful he’d make it out of Memphis visit and be willing to visit, but that didn’t happen, would’ve given some potential leverage with Perry. I’ve also heard that Knecht might be moving up the board, not sure if that’s related to them liking him over Ledlum or in addition to, but they like him. Again things are constantly moving and shifting but right now I’d say…

Perry/McKnight/Glover/Grill
Knecht
Ledlum

I think Knecht can create mismatches more and his length is better w/ defense, blocks, rebounding. I'm imagining him with better players around him and it makes my mouth water.
Ledlum will shoot more 3s but has hard time driving in the lane.
Here's two full games with Knecht vs Houston (Knecht scores the first 6pts) and Ledlum vs Kansas.

FAU did the opposite of that, not extending to the perimeter except for Véscovi. They gave Plavsic one on one inside but crowded Nkamhoua, which was one reason he never got going. Everybody else they basically dared to shoot.

Zeigler for that matter was often left alone on the perimeter, since he was only shooting 31%. Smart defenses gave us a lot of open looks on the outside, and it only occasionally burned them (Duke).

On ball perimeter defense was always tight and my recollection of open 3-pt shots is that too many were from very deep well beyond the college line

I mean who wouldn’t? That would be embarrassing.

Exactly.

Glover/Grill to go with Gainey, and you expect me to be happy with it? Lol

“WhO hAVE wE MisSeD?”

Well how about half the guys on the list you made.

Let’s put it this way, Auburn has assistant coaches jumping ship, but still landed Denver Jones

Idk. I’m kinda tired of hearing about how every time we miss on a guy (or are about to) it’s because he’s got an entourage or is a bit of a jerk or something. And then they do just fine wherever they do end up

It’s classic justification. Makes us feel better to find something to point to that isn’t our fault.

Who have we missed? In reality who have we actually had a legitimate shot at? Maybe it’s because not everyone wants to come to Tennessee. I hope I’m wrong but that just might be the case.

Yep. I posted elsewhere that playing for a guy like Barnes isn't for everyone. Lots of young kids think they want hard coaching and to be "developed" but that might not play as well once reality sets in. Gonna be really interesting to see how this all plays out especially if Phillips and/or Aidoo end up in the portal.

Kids today are soft and expect to be treated like royalty soon as they step on campus.

If they can’t handle hard coaching, that’s on them.

Barnes shouldn’t have to change his way of coaching just because someone’s feelings might get hurt.

Particularly when our best teams were made up of guys who wanted to put in the work and be developed.

Grant/Admiral were perfect Barnes players and 2018/2019 was an amazing time to be a Vols basketball fan. In the past couple years we’ve had guys like Chandler/Santi/ZZ and a ton more that have embraced the culture.

So easy to root for these teams that commit to growth and development, and teams that are great on the court and off it. Personally I love the type of guys/culture that Barnes brings in.

Is it possible that CRB likes his rising freshmen and sophomores better than most of the portal guys?
Yeah. Also might be that potentially returning seniors take those spots instead. Can’t say I’d rather have any of the portal guys over another year of JJJ.

Completely agree. Just hypothesizing that it might explain some of what we're seeing or that's rumored to be taking place.

But yet you’re complaining that we are “missing” because guys from that same list who we aren’t pursuing have committed elsewhere or cut their list, that makes no sense.
Are there guys on that list that you would be disappointed if we landed them over some of the others?

Exactly.

And yet half those guys on that list you’ve said you don’t want, so which is it? They’ve identified probably 4-5 top targets at this juncture in my estimation, the only one you can claim they may have missed on was Mills and even that may be a stretch considering the thought was he was leaning Memphis.

Are there guys on that list that you would be disappointed if we landed them over some of the others?
Sure, but the guys on the list we are targeting are still there, so whining and b!tching about how doomed we are because we’ve missed on guys we didn’t want makes no sense if we had landed guys we also didn’t really want and weren’t gonna be happy about out. Not every player listed is a top target or priority recruit or even being recruited, again, Arkansas has contacted 85+ players…are they being criticized for missing on 80 guys most likely?

Who do you think we want the most, and who would you like to see us get?

I think we are very high on Perry, Knecht & Ledlum…I think behind them to a lesser degree we like Glover & Grill, but won’t push for those guys until we have a better feel for where we are with the first 3.

Other than Perry, why aren't we pursuing any of the bigger names out there? Is it an NIL thing? Are they just not interested in Tennessee? I'm trying to understand why we don't seem to go after some of the bigger talents. I'm not saying Knecht and Ledlum are bad, or that they would be bad additions, it just seems there are better out there. So why wouldn't we pursue them? And I guess I just believe we should be able to do better than Glover and Grill.
