Tennessee Transfer Portal Targets

Not landing a PG is a disaster, IMO. No way around it. I'd believe that even if ZZ hadn't been hurt.

Yeah, but it's always comical how every day Trippie is in love with a new random PG he didn't even known existed UNTIL they hit the portal.

Share the information, share your opinion...but damn I don't like seeing the "going at" people for them doing the same thing.

Ultimately none of us have any input or sway into what Barnes & staff will do. I'm going to ride or die with my Vols regardless of who is on the squad next season though.

I do like Hawkins as well, especially because he shoots it so damn well AND he's got at least 2 years of eligibility.

Perry has been my personal favorite PG in the portal for a minute though, so until he's committed elsewhere I'm going to hold out hope. I also think if we can get him to visit we can land him.

So, basically the summary of the update is:

Santi (Looking Good)
JJJ/Uros (Most likely gone)
Ledlum (Promising)
Knecht (Unlikely)
Perry (Unlikely)
Gainey (TBD on everything else)

Is this fair?

Hawkins 5’11: 12.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 6 assist, 1.7 steals, 4 to, 44%fg

Kennedy Chandler 6’0: 13.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.7 assist, 2.2 steals, 2.5 to, 46%fg

Chandler 2.0?
Should’ve stopped at Yuri Collins. 😂

Maybe we ultimately have less room than we thought, if there’s no transfers out, Santi returns while JJJ & Uros leave, that’s only room for 1 addition…

Zeigler/Dilione
Santi/Edwards/Carr
Mashack/Jefferson
Phillips/Phillips
Aidoo/Awaka/Estrella

The big unknown is when will Zeigler be ready, and how effective can Dilione be at PG? If the feeling is that Zeigler is ready for Game 1 and also that Dilione not only is capable of playing PG but playing it well, then maybe if there truly is just 1 spot maybe it is better served outside of PG/CG? A wing shooter in Knecht? Or a versatile 4/5 in Ledlum?

Dillione is going have a lot weight on his shoulders either way if ZZ is ready or not. Him being EE tho makes me worry less.
Torn tho if 1 spot is available with ledlum or knecht. Ledlum can be the driver that opens up the offense and allows Santi Zz Carr and Dillone to shoot, and would help continue the elite defense. While Knecht can be the offensive weapon that the roster desperately needs. Could he consistently be that weapon tho is my question.

MEAC basketball. Yuck.

Look at the bigger teams he played against.

Kansas: 12 points, 5/11 shooting, 2 rebounds, 8 assist, 2 steals, but damn 7 turnovers

Harvard: 9 points, 3/7 shooting, 7 rebounds, 5 assist, 3 steals, again 7 turnovers

FIU: 13 points, 5/8 shooting, 6 rebounds, 4 assist, 2 steals, 3 turnovers

VCU: 3 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assist, 1 steal, 5 turnovers

Belmont: 15 points, 4/8 shooting, 1 rebound, 5 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers

Buffalo: 12 points, 4/10 shooting, 3 rebounds, 4 assist, 3 steals, 6 turnovers

Wyoming: 17 points, 7/13 shooting, 3 rebounds, 6 assist, 4 turnovers

JMU: 18 points, 8/13 shooting, 3 rebounds, 8 assist, 2 steals, 3 turnovers

Kentucky: 14 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assist, 1 steal, 4 turnovers

I know the turnovers are meh, but Yuri averaged the same amount.

Don’t worry, I’m just throwing players out there. Doubt we reach out

The gap between the A10/MEAC is also just as big as the gap between the SEC/A10. MEAC basketball is really, really, really bad.

I did check out his games against some better teams, and it's... ok? 93 ortg against UK and 78 against KU in 30-point losses. 48 ortg and 3 pts against VCU, all while being a non-factor defensively. Would rather have Glover.

Well luckily for you, we prob won’t reach out anyways.

For some reason, Glover just screams Key 2.0. Guess it’s some type of weird mental thing lmao

I actually like Jordan Gainey... with how we've recruited other than PG I don't see us looking for starters in the portal, and if Santi returns that's even less likely. But at 6'4" with 61 starts in 64 games averaging 31.6 mpg here's Gainey's numbers

42.6% FG, 40.8% 3PT, 79.7% FT
14.5 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 2.2 APG, 1.6 SPG, with just 2.3 turnovers per game

Has two years to play as well, I think as a 6th man type guy he would be a solid addition especially if you could get him without using a scholarship (not sure if that's possible). If those were his stats and he was a true PG folks would be all over it. I think he's the "if Santi leaves" option and that's likely why nothing has happened yet. Now if Santi returns are we going to make room for him? Not sure.

I'll also add that we aren't seeing a bunch of other programs just dominate the transfer portal this cycle. I don't think any team has signed every player they have desired. Right now, I think you can look at Houston and LSU as the big winners so far, but that's based off of the addition of 2 guys for each school. If we can start the season with 2 solid, high level transfers with the addition of Gainey if we don't return the players we expect, that's a win. Knecht and Ledlum would fill two specific gaps. Tennessee needs a hybrid scorer from the perimeter to the post (Ledlum) and high level shooting (Knecht).
