Tennessee Transfer Portal Targets

I actually like Jordan Gainey... with how we've recruited other than PG I don't see us looking for starters in the portal, and if Santi returns that's even less likely. But at 6'4" with 61 starts in 64 games averaging 31.6 mpg here's Gainey's numbers

42.6% FG, 40.8% 3PT, 79.7% FT
14.5 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 2.2 APG, 1.6 SPG, with just 2.3 turnovers per game

Has two years to play as well, I think as a 6th man type guy he would be a solid addition especially if you could get him without using a scholarship (not sure if that's possible). If those were his stats and he was a true PG folks would be all over it. I think he's the "if Santi leaves" option and that's likely why nothing has happened yet. Now if Santi returns are we going to make room for him? Not sure.
Reading between the lines... @Stoerner's Fumble can correct me if I'm wrong...it seems like Gainey is a foregone conclusion, and Santi's decision maybe determines whether he joins as a walk-on or a scholarship player.

Without saying it, that's what I was thinking the case was going to be.

On paper he looks like a Santi replacement completely, the question is will he be able to replicate that production in the SEC. Cause if he can then no one in their right mind would turn him away.

I think Gainey scholarship/walk on isn’t necessarily directly tied to Santi, it’s just a matter of who can we land, who leaves and how many spots do we have? It could come down to whether Phillips opts to return or not as to whether Gainey is put on scholarship or not.

Maybe we ultimately have less room than we thought, if there’s no transfers out, Santi returns while JJJ & Uros leave, that’s only room for 1 addition…

Zeigler/Dilione
Santi/Edwards/Carr
Mashack/Jefferson
Phillips/Phillips
Aidoo/Awaka/Estrella

The big unknown is when will Zeigler be ready, and how effective can Dilione be at PG? If the feeling is that Zeigler is ready for Game 1 and also that Dilione not only is capable of playing PG but playing it well, then maybe if there truly is just 1 spot maybe it is better served outside of PG/CG? A wing shooter in Knecht? Or a versatile 4/5 in Ledlum?
This ain't good boss.

Yeah, I guess I should have clarified. From the beginning I have gotten the vibe that Gainey is here either way BUT him going on scholarship will be about numbers. So if Santi leaves, Phillips, someone else that would open a scholarship for him.

Gainey wants to be here. He has a backup school if we can’t take him. They’re going to try to make it work without using a scholarship. After that, there is a vortex of unknowns. They’ll try to sign him without using a scholarship regardless of what Santi does.

Every year there is always these smaller schools that have these guards that can penetrate and score and i think to myself why cant we get guards like this. But its easier to sit on the couch with nothing but fan pride on the line and not a paycheck. I sort of feel sorry for these coaches and all the pressure they are under to produce every year. Makes me glad im not a coach. But that paycheck would be cool.

Khalif Battle isn't a slam dunk imo...

4 years and he's only played 69 games and only has 19 starts. Hasn't played a full season yet in his career and has 2 seasons of the 4 where he failed to play 12 games.

He's going to sit on the bench at Arkansas a lot I think.

We giveth not taketh

I know some of y’all are dead set on criticizing Barnes re the portal but surely one thing you can’t say is that we lose good players to the portal. Part of this new era is losing talent every year but who have we lost that’s hurt us? BHH? Pember? Gaines?

Honestly, I have no clue how things will play out but I’m very excited about next year if Santi and J. Phillips come back. I’m very comfortable with the backcourt of ZZ, Dillone, Mashack, Edwards, and Santi. Add in J. Phillips, Carr, and Jefferson on the wings plus Aidoo, Awaka, Estrella, and C.Phillips at post is a deep, talented team. Still room for one portal guy in this scenario.

Program stability is a good thing, imo. It says a lot about your program when you don’t have a lot of guys hitting the portal but instead want to stay put. When portal “failures” start causing us to miss NCAA tourney, I will get worried about it then.

Ques Glover to visit Ole Miss this weekend. Hopefully we don’t let our plan Bs commit other places. I seem to be in the minority but I would be content with taking Glover to be a backup PG. Definitely beats getting no backup point guard at all

This whole sitting back and letting them come to us thing seems to be working out well.
Young men like this isn't looking for best fit looking for biggest billfold, some take advantage of this way to much. Its not how much you like my game it's how much do you need my services
