Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Number one the more transfers obviously means less freshmen

then as I said This is a 2-4 year process. The returning seniors will take minutes away from the fewer freshmen which means more of them will transfer and develop slower

the ncaa really screwed up and hurt these Hs kids. It’s clearly the worst time ever to be an incoming athlete into the ncaa

I don't think this is going to impact HS kids as much as you think, but that's personal opinion. However, this is probably the one-time that the blame shouldn't fall on the NCAA. It was a lose-lose situation. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. If they didn't grant the "free" year to players currently on rosters, people would have pitched a fit saying the NCAA doesn't care about the well-being of the kids. Now, you're saying they don't care about HS kids.

It's the same with the one-time transfer rule. People have been clamoring for this to happen for years, and now it's happening and other people are saying "it's going to ruin the sport." There was literally no winning. I think they did the best they could.

I see your point but that's true every year no matter what. Every transfer = one less spot available for a HS kid. Whether there is a one time transfer waiver put in or not. The transfer portal has already put a spotlight on transfers in general so I'm not informed enough to know if that created an increase in transfers or not, but currently I don't see how it changes anything for incoming HS kids yet. I feel like there's probably a stat out there that shows that most transfers fill spots that were created by other transfers instead of just natural progression of players graduating/going pro.

Look at us for example. We're talking about creating spots for transfers by potentially asking players to leave the team, we're not ignoring or not taking incoming HS players we want that want to come here for transfers.
The seniors that are taking advantage of the extra year would not normally be a part of the equation, though. Their decision to take advantage of it, yet transfer to another school, occupies a scholarship that normally would have gone to an incoming freshmen.

To use simple math, you have 100 student athletes (25 FR, 25, SO, 25 JR, 25 SR). Of those 25 SRs, 10 decide they will take advantage of the NCAAs offer to play an additional year. None of those 10 count towards the scholarship limit. However, 5 of them decide they are going to transfer, and now they DO count toward their new school’s limit. Unless that school was carrying an open spot that they didn’t plan to fill for 2021-22, anyway, then that SR player has now taken the spot that could have been occupied by an incoming freshman.

Now, we are likely talking fringe cases and the number of them is probably far from significant, but I see the point.

I just don’t think we need to add another project (Tamba). We have plenty already. I mean come on , the guy averages 6 points in his h.s. career.
We likely would lose “a project or two” on the current roster...the HS game isn’t really beneficial for bigs and Tamba isn’t being recruited for his offense either, I doubt Kyle Alexander was scoring much in HS, iirc he was actually a backup.

I believe those seniors count if you take them as a transfer. I think I heard that somewhere. They don’t count if they stay at their current school, but as a transfer, they would count against scholarship limits. I might be making that up, but I thought I remembered reading that.

That’s accurate

I'm confused, where is the Walker Kessler chatter coming from? Is there anything to it or is it just message board fodder?

We’d all like to have a Deandre Ayton or Karl Anthony Towns but there isn’t one available. We’re going to have to add some size to this class even if it means taking on a project. I’m sure we’ll hunt the grad transfer market too, but as we’ve seen with Anosike, that can be very hit or miss. You might strike it rich every now and then, but usually there’s a reason those kids went to mid major schools in the first place.

Sounds like to me the players that do not develop quickly will be hurt the most by the tranfer market. Players that do not develop quickly on the P5 level will be replaced by the players that when to lower level schools that blew up.

I watched the whole thing and Jahmai shoots a lot better than I thought he did. Yes, I realize Mashack was unguarded, but he has a nice stroke, imo. This kid kinda reminds me of Armani Moore, although I think Jahmai may end up a better offensive player. Kinda kid that should help this team, immediately, but not too good that he leaves, early. Well, maybe after 3 years, but not before then, imo

I would take Powell for sure
I know we recruited him a bit out of high school, definitely a good looking player, being inter-SEC he may have to sit a year.

On a side note, with Cooper almost certainly going to the NBA and Powell transferring Auburn is looking a little suspect for next year.

If it’s anything like his initial recruitment, we are going to be disappointed. It kept feeling like we had a legitimate shot, but he never got to campus. I would believe Kessler to Tennessee is highly unlikely. I’m not even sure he’s going to be what most thought he would be. It seems as if his upside has been scaled back.

Agree with the first part. Based on his flaky reception to us in the original recruiting process, I find it hard to get my hopes up in any potential second go-round.

The second part, though, is a little premature, I think. UNC has just been a bad situation for him because of their depth in the post. He is playing behind Bacot, Brooks, and Sharpe, currently. No real shame in that as all 3 are likely pros. He moves really well for a big man, has some nice bend to him, and is 2nd on the team in rebounding and scoring per 40 minutes among the UNC regulars. I think the talent is there, but he just walked into a crowded situation along with another freshman at his position.

I'm really a little surprised he is considering a transfer since Brooks is a SR (doubtful he'd return) and you have to think one of Sharpe/Bacot turns pro. They also aren't currently bringing anyone in at the post position in a rather bleak looking (by UNC standards) 2021 class. Unless all three of the aforementioned players return to school, things seem to be set up nicely for a solid year for Kessler, next season.
