Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

I agree no team plays 1-13 but I think its fair to say we are carrying a few projects and a lack of scholarships has kept us from offering some players the last few years we could have had a shot at that would be contributors. The Russian kid at florida is one that comes to mind. I just don't think having 4 year projects makes a lot of sense for schools in the current environment. Barnes doesn't seem to run off players too much, which I like.
We find ourselves in our current position because we missed on more than we hit in the 2017, 2018, and 2019 classes. Plavsic is a worthy gamble if he's the worst player in your class. Same with Pember or Zach Kent. But when Pons, JJJ, Vescovi, Bailey, and maybe Nkamhoua are the only kids that pan out across 12 kids in 3 classes, then you are left with a bench of projects that reaches into your top 10.

Four of those kids have already transferred and I suspect two of our current bench players will be enrolled elsewhere, next year. If we bring in Chandler, Mashack, and BHH in 2021, then I have no problem taking a chance on a kid like Tamba, and his size.

Y'all are silly AF playing that game. Absolutely no point in bringing up the topic on VN and withholding the name if you know who it is. Has it ever not been figured out in a short amount of time?

Isiaih Mosley of Missouri State.
I’ve thought the same but didn’t want to start a **** storm lol

Obviously player evals in recruiting include how they are going to be as students and adhering to rules, so I’m not excusing Barnes or staff on this, but from a purely talent standpoint and roster standpoint, what would this roster look like had Walker & Burns stayed at Tennessee?

Walker gave Nebraska 21mpg 6pts 5rbd & Burns gave Winthrop 16mpg 10ppg 5rpg...if those 2 were here we certainly don’t take Anosike, so would we have added someone else, or might we have held the spot and been a factor for Oscar Tshiebwe or Caleb Mills mid season?

I don’t recall losing to this team in the NCAAT, maybe we did before my time or I’m misremembering.

They have since changed their school name and you have to go back a while.

SW Missouri State? That was another Jerry Green March gem. We got blown out by 30 points, and watching the game it didn't even seem like it was that close.

Next time I’ll say nothing, sorry to try and bring some discussion and maybe optimism to the board 🤷🏻‍♂️
Like others have stated, we appreciate all info you bring.

I just think it's hypocritical and a bit nonsensical to present the info in that manner. If we're really concerned about the kid's privacy, shouldn't it not be discussed even if a name isn't dropped? To take it a step farther, if you're going to withold for privacy, you most certainly shouldn't entertain the "is it X-player from X-school?" game. And honestly, would anyone on earth be surprised that we're scouting the transfer market? The circumstances and manner in which the info was presented just does not compute with me. Maintaining the kid's privacy does compute, but I feel like we're past that point.

I would agree with this.

He didn’t originally lay out a bunch of hints that were immediately identifiable as to who the player is. It was other posters who just posited more hints after they had guessed. It’s really not that big of a deal.

Jerry Green was the coach who did nothing special with a boatload of talent.

Tennessee could have made a Final Four with a little coaching under his watch.
I still believe he had the most complete collection of talent and ability in Tennessee history amongst those rosters. And we got one S16 out of it.

That is the truth. His lack of coaching was staggering. Instilled zero discipline within the program or players. Did not do anything offensively to put the players in position to be successful. We won games because we had THAT MUCH talent that we were able to win games without any coaching. Give that roster to any competent coach and they would have had massive success.

He absolutely did. The greatest mismanagement of talent by any Vol coach in any sport that I can remember. Plus, he was one of the most unlikeable personalities I can remember.

Basically Oliver is an upcoming HC canditate for small schools. He is the prime recruiter for BJ Edwards, Tamba, and BHH (who all played for Bmaze). We currently lead for all of them thanks to Oliver so he is very important for our next class.

Yeah I hope we can hang up to Des. I honestly like the whole makeup of this staff as they compliment each other so well. And all are very good recruiters.

I would be interested to see what Bruce Pearl would have done with any of Green's teams. Those rosters were all better than what he inherited from Buzz, and we all know how that worked out. I think Barnes would have done a lot better too although I think some of the less-disciplined players would have ended up leaving.

Out of all the MBB coaches Tennessee has had during my years of fandom (which only goes back to DeVoe), Green is the only one I don't like because he a) squandered all the talent Kevin O'Neill left him and b) had a terrible personality to boot.

I think it is way underapprectiated what Kevin O'Neill did to totally turn around recruiting for Tennessee. I get it that he was a first class jerk, but his recruiting was the only reason Green had any success at all, in my opinion.

I would have liked to see what O'Neill could have done with real SEC level players to coach.

He would have constantly dog cussed them till they hated playing for him. Don’t think he would have ever fielded top teams and would have had large defections. ONeal was far and away the biggest jerk coach I can remember at UT

It's hard to imagine that he could have been so good at recruiting them, and then not be able to coach them. Not saying you are wrong though, haha.

Sure man. Let me go ahead and put UT basketball under investigation for some internet cred. Why would you even want that as a fan of the team? What a silly request.

Just do some basic research on the AAU circuit, shoe companies, and high school basketball recruiting. They all show how widespread the issue is. So now you think we have the one coach that isn't doing anything outside of NCAA rules and we have found the few families that not only have some moral high ground not to take money, but also don't need or could use that money? Amounts of money that to the bulk of Americans would be life changing. You're taking multiple huge leaps of faith to get to where you're at. Or just ignoring reality.

Folks, when ‘86 mentions the “AAU Circuit,” he starts the right conversation. That outfit is more corrupt than the NCAA could ever hope to be.

I don’t know how Coach Barnes recruits so well (going back decades)...and we’re probably better off not knowing. And I think he is a fine human being. He just happens to swim in a nasty cesspool of a swamp when he deals with AAU coaches.

Another sharp, classy Barnes assistant.
