Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

uh, Dan had 8 years experience as a D1 head coach when he took over UConn...he's a known commodity

Penny was a HS coach...I guess it's crazy that I totally expect a learning curve out of Penny. It's why he hired Sam Mitchell (former Toronto Raptors HC) and Larry Brown to lean on as asst coaches.
A good coach is making the tournament with that roster.

which team? I assume you mean his first ever as a college HC when the NCAA takes his best player 1 week before the season starts...an NCAA is a steep ask under those circumstances IMHO.

if you mean this upcoming season, then I totally agree.

This past season? Every team in the country dealt with covid, not an excuse.

I don’t know what Memphis’s situation was but it didn’t affect every team equally. TN was hit pretty hard. Barnes and Fulkerson specifically had COVID.

I just don’t think that Penny is a good college coach. Good recruiter though. It will be interesting to see if an 81 year old Larry Brown can help.

I have had this same discussion with this same 'welcoming group' back in 2019...
I guess you'll just have to excuse our suspicions of the coincidental nature of your appearances and how they coincide with Memphis having a talented roster and ramped up expectations. Radio silence on your part across the the past two years while Memphis has underachieved hasn't helped convince anyone otherwise.

Memphis isn't blessed with a SEC TV contract, COVID hurt. Larry was able to get SMU rolling at the ripe age of 75 so I'm sure he can help Penny as an asst coach.

we should play more often, I'll come around more ;-)

We probably would if your coach didn't tell ours to "get the **** out of here." He just did what was asked.

that makes it MORE fun! of course, I admit when we think of UT hoops we think of Bruce with his goofy smile and one liners...I guess Rick has made you guys more stoic.

If players weren’t directly affected, COVID tended to help the less than elite programs. The blue bloods were ripe for the taking. I don’t know if COVID ran through the Tigger’s program or not, but it certainly didn’t affect every program equally.

Why doesn't Memphis play in a league with a TV contract equal to the SEC? And why would Hardaway or any other head coach need Larry Brown on his bench? Shouldn't an assistant be there to learn from the HC?

Larry Brown is an extremely good coach - in practice and during the game. He would be an asset on any bench.

he's still learning D1 college hoops...I at least knew there would be a steep learning curve but he's an outstanding recruiter which is needed at Memphis.

So far, of the really good players who are currently now D1 coaches, Juwan Howard appears to be the only good one. There are extremely few examples of success stories going that route. It's just really tough to be both. If I was Memphis, I'd have Penny the head coach in title only and leave the actual coaching to Larry. If Penny can just focus on recruiting, y'all will have a much greater chance of success. If it doesn't happen this season with that talent, I don't know that it ever will because Larry is already sort of ancient.

I've been here since 2009, thx.
12 years, and I bet most of your activity was 2019. 2020 yes, but 2019…….no. The Tigers’ 2019 preseason talk was one for the ages. You guys always try to craft an angle. Why are you even on a Vol message board if not to antagonize?

A good coach wouldn't need somebody like Larry to lean on.

Pat Summit had Dean Lockwood on her bench for 15 years. Was he valuable to Pat? Absolutely, or he would have found the door. Did this make Pat any less than the GOAT? Absolutely not.

Larry preaches never, never shoot a contested shot. Otherwise you go to the bench. He uses motion to create open shots. He is skilled at analyzing an opponent and developing open shot strategies. A lot of coaches are also good at this. What makes Brown special is his preparing his team for the other teams in-game adjustments. His teams practice against those adjustments And the adjustments to adjustments. Many college teams are not well practiced to this level of anticipation.

This is a good reason for bringing in Larry Brown. I'm certain Larry is not be brought in because he is a player's coach or due to his charming personality. He is abrasive. He also can be self loathing and his own worst critic. This is why he has had many jobs. On the flip side, he continues to get hired because he is so complete in his understanding of the game.

Terrible comparison
