Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Pat Summit had Dean Lockwood on her bench for 15 years. Was he valuable to Pat? Absolutely, or he would have found the door. Did this make Pat any less than the GOAT? Absolutely not.

Larry preaches never, never shoot a contested shot. Otherwise you go to the bench. He uses motion to create open shots. He is skilled at analyzing an opponent and developing open shot strategies. A lot of coaches are also good at this. What makes Brown special is his preparing his team for the other teams in-game adjustments. His teams practice against those adjustments And the adjustments to adjustments. Many college teams are not well practiced to this level of anticipation.

This is a good reason for bringing in Larry Brown. I'm certain Larry is not be brought in because he is a player's coach or due to his charming personality. He is abrasive. He also can be self loathing and his own worst critic. This is why he has had many jobs. On the flip side, he continues to get hired because he is so complete in his understanding of the game.
That comparison is quite a stretch. Pat Sunmitt had already won 6 titles prior to Lockwood. She made people into coaches. She didn't ride anyone's coattails. She was about as self-made as one can get. First head coaching gig at age 22 without any prior experience, and won a title within 5 years.

I guess you'll just have to excuse our suspicions of the coincidental nature of your appearances and how they coincide with Memphis having a talented roster and ramped up expectations. Radio silence on your part across the the past two years while Memphis has underachieved hasn't helped convince anyone otherwise.
Wait until October and the Memphis fans will be all over the forum. They’ll be like zits popping up on a teenager’s face.

Kevin Ollie won a National Title at UConn. Fired a few years later just like Gene Czick. Now he is director of player development. Just saying

I think that's because he got hit with a show cause order...DPD is gonna be the best he can do unless an NBA team wants him as an asst.

True, but Calipari built UMass up from absolutely nothing. Hadn’t had a winning season in > 10 years before him, some 2-3 win seasons in that time, and a prior coach with a <10% win %? Hideous. Ollie was after Jim Calhoun, so a totally different story.

I don’t know if Larry will be able to adjust to the bottom being cut out of the peach basket.

he did it by recruiting Lou Roe and Marcus Camby...if you get great players the wins will follow.

Sure, but UMass went from 10 wins in year 1 to 20 in year 3 before Roe and Camby arrived, then they took off. That’s the formula for coaches who don’t happen to be former NBA stars, do good work with the less heralded players in order to attract the blue chippers. That’s what Barnes has done.
