Not sure about how Barnes would feel about taking Lanierās guy, and what back story there could be to him leavingā¦also not sure they want to take 2 guys 6ā or less, and theyāve committed to Collins.
If the SMU kid is in the portal, how is that "taking Lanier's guy" if he is losing him in the first place? He's transferring, so if anything I figure Lanier wouldn't mind a kid leaving his program go play for Barnes who he respects and admires.
Not to mention he was never really Lanier's to begin with. If Rob is wanting to do right by the kid, then help place him somewhere where he knows the kid can succeed and play for a man that he trusts. If the SMU kid is in the portal, how is that "taking Lanier's guy" if he is losing him in the first place? On the flipside, perhaps Lanier has already detected some issues that would make the kid a bad fit for Tennessee and would discourage Barnes and staff not to pursue.
I guess that is a two-way street.
There is no way the staff is taking both Collins and Davis. No room at the inn for two 6'0 point guards when you already have a 5'9 point guard on the roster. It's an either/or situation, and Collins seems to be the guy they are committed to despite not technically even being in the portal. To be fair though, Davis isn't "Lanier's guy." He's a graduating senior that already transferred once from TCU to SMU and is now looking to play another season somewhere else since there is a new staff in town. He played a ton of minutes and was their main scorer though. Even without Collins he wouldn't be playing that type of role here with ZZ, Santi, ON, JJJ returning.
I feel like we're less attractive to high minute starters or major scorers than we are to a guy like Collins. Yuri is looking to improve his stock and has no issue being a distributor. Davis has been a 10+ FGA a night guy for 3 seasons at SMU...don't know if he'd be interested in coming here and having less minutes and less opportunities to get shots up.
He's almost a smaller version of what Key offers.
Last full season stats:
Davis - 34.6 mpg, 19.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.4 apg, 43.9% FG, 37.2% 3PT, 86.8% FT, 1.5 spg, 2.7 tovs
Key - 34.0 mpg, 17.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 2.0 apg, 47.2% FG, 31.6% 3PT, 83.8% FT, 1.1 spg, 1.8 tovs
Key has more size. And if ya land Yuri, Davis would be more likely to play the off guard spot. So in that role would he be an upgrade over Key?

Maybe Lanier would feel like he wouldāve considered a return to SMU? Again there likely would also be discussions as to why he left SMU, lots of time thereās a lot of background done. And again the bigger reason, the staff is already committed to Collins and I donāt think theyād bring in 2 guys sub 6ā, could be wrong. If the SMU kid is in the portal, how is that "taking Lanier's guy" if he is losing him in the first place? Maybe shouldnāt have included that part, the rest stands tho.True in both regards. I just don't view this as taking someone's player when he is in the portal and has no intention of returning to SMU. It's not like we illegally contacted Davis and asked him to go into the portal and did some shady stuff. He's in the portal so he's fair game, IMO.
This is a good point and likely a big attraction to Collinsā¦you lose KC/Fulk/BHH who took 20 FGA/game, if youāre looking at adding 4 players Iām not sure you have room for 1 of those guys to be someone who is looking to shoot 14 times a game, and is a bit of a volume shooter. To be fair though, Davis isn't "Lanier's guy." A volume shooter is someone who scores a lot of point only because they take a lot. Davis is very efficient. Better shooting numbers across the board than Collins. Also, Davis shoots it less than Key did in his last season and just slightly more than KC did this yearThis is a good point and likely a big attraction to Collinsā¦you lose KC/Fulk/BHH who took 20 FGA/game, if youāre looking at adding 4 players Iām not sure you have room for 1 of those guys to be someone who is looking to shoot 14 times a game, and is a bit of a volume shooter.
Collins is a done deal?

As a percentage of their teams shots when they are on the floor. Key 27.8% and Davis 26.6%. I would assume Key is OK w that role but that was also what I was mentioning a few days ago about fit. Collins isnāt a big time scorer and heās also not efficient. Davis is a more efficient scorer with higher usage. Thing is, if weāre looking for someone to step in to backfill for Chandler, Davis is going to be a lot closer than Collins. Given our front court situation seems like that would be preferable.Thatās not accurate from the stats I saw? Also, I think Key would be very ok with not being āthe guyā, I donāt see that as the case for Davis or Pack. And nobody is claiming Collins to be a big time scorer.
Gotcha, I was looking at FGAā¦Collins was also named to All-Defense team which is something Davis wasnāt, for whatever that is worth. Chandler definitely was more of a scorer than what Collins would bring, and Iām not putting down Davis, he likely is top transfer available, and I havenāt stated Collins is the better player, I just donāt see the pursuit happening as then you risk missing both.As a percentage of their teams shots when they are on the floor. Being a big fan of both Saint Louis U and UT makes your last statement in this post still a head scratcher. To my knowledge Yuri Collins isn't in the transfer. He only stated he is doing a NBA evaluation, and everyone knows he's not NBA ready player. So when I see things like Yuri has been on campus and he's a sure thing it makes me wonder what really is going on. Either way I'll be watching him play on one of my favorite college teams. There is no way the staff is taking both Collins and Davis. Yeah I get it. If they choose not to pursue someone then they have their reasons, but considering they reached out to Pack seems surprising they wouldnāt at least test the waters w Davis.Gotcha, I was looking at FGAā¦Collins was also named to All-Defense team which is something Davis wasnāt, for whatever that is worth. Pack has some 2 guard to his game, thatās actually what he played at K State this past year, and Iām not actually sure just how much legit reaching out there was there. Maybe I should back off a bit on my take with Davis, they very well may reach out and gauge interest and if they feel heās theirs to lose they probably take a run at himā¦90% of the guys who enter the portal though already have a pretty good idea in mind of where theyāre going.Yeah I get it.
