Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Gotta love the offseason. We already have posters talking about getting rid of Barnes after a 27-8 season and a coaching tenure that has completely changed the UT hoops culture for the better.

Just my opinion but I’m going to wait until I see a poor product on the court before I will advocate for a coaching change. I remember UT die-hards on message boards reading Barnes the riot act after his first two years……he couldn’t recruit any more, we had no SEC talent, he was coasting to retirement, blah, blah, blah. We then won 57 games the next two years.

I completely trust CRB to put together our roster for the 2022-2023 season. He knows the business of building successful basketball teams far better than I. He certainly isn’t above criticism but I think the criticisms I’m reading on here are extremely premature.

Sky is falling. We’re totally gonna suck next year. (There’s still a week for other guys to enter the portal) relax until we see the final roster. I think people are forgetting we have guys like ZZ, Jo, Santi (likely), ORN, Aidoo, Plav among many returning. I also wouldn’t sleep on a guy like Powell or Mashack becoming a much better player in year two of the system.

Im not one of those ppl but there is no doubt we need to find another scoring threat at guard we can’t rely on Vescovi. I think we’re easily still a 20 win team just would be nice to have another scoring threat

Gotta think this could be connected w Phillips to auburn smoke.

I would think it would have more to do with Johni Broome who average a double-double as a freshman and was behind Kessler nationally in blocks. BHH probably didn't want to wait on Broome's decision unless he already informed Auburn he was coming.

Calipari hasn’t made the tournament twice at UK with stupid talent. We have some dumb fans.
To be fair, though, do you think that was the expectation for UK in those seasons? I think the poster is saying that we are at a point with our program that making the tournament should be the minimum annual expectation (same as it is at UK), and I can't say I disagree with him.

He said it should be guaranteed. Maybe it’s semantics, but I interpreted that differently than what expectations are. Expecting a good outcome and saying that a program should be guaranteed to make the NCAAT just seems different to me. Because…I can guarantee that we aren’t making it every year from here on out.

This, of course, comes with the other posts that predict doom and gloom right now in the spring, as has happened some the past 5 years under Barnes. It’s like people have trouble reading the room as Barnes has made it 26 of 34 years. Just like when our fans suggest that we will have trouble making the NCAAT 2/3 through the season because we struggled on the road and don’t have enough big wins.

We gotta get a PG. This is the list of good PGs left in the portal; Hassan Diarra of A&M, Ryan Conway Seton Hall, Rocket Watts Miss State, Devin Askew Texas, Tyrese Hunter Iowa State, Tyler Harris Memphis, and Meechie Johnson Ohio State. Any possible guy out of this group? I mean we had to have a plan B, or heck maybe we had another PG become interested we view as better? Idk, I just know we NEED another PG. We need some a couple more quality players. One PG and one post preferred. Anybody know anything?? Volquest saying anything at all??

I’m starting to become frustrated myself, but I gotta believe there’s a plan. We had a good late finish to last years recruiting class, so there’s gotta be a plan!! Right??

Apologies, spent the day out on the lake, summary…

As recruiting goes things can change quickly, maybe it’s on me for saying it was a done deal, but it was as much a done deal as it could be. SLU AD started pushing the tampering allegations and threatening pursuing them and making it public, Barnes got cold feet and basically pulled the plug on Collins coming here. He was supposed to originally visit Monday and it got slowed down, then again they were gonna bring him in this weekend but that’s when the tampering smoke thickened. Again, apologies for calling this one a done deal, but I really thought that was safe to say.

The other aspect of everything going on is NIL, Rick is definitely not transitioning well to it and also isn’t just getting out of the way of assistants who are younger and allowing them to handle it. He hasn’t done a good job communicating with Spyre and they feel in the dark in regards to hoops quite often, Rick isn’t necessarily against NIL but it’s not actively pursued like just about every other current school.

There’s also some rumblings that Powell is back to considering heading for a pro deal, obviously if that happens we are back to 4 open spots. How Barnes and staff fill this roster now will be very interesting, and if you’re worried I get it, I will wait and see how it unfolds before declaring us as crappy or doomed etc. I also think calling for the guy to step aside at this point before having a “bad season” is premature, I agree that if recruiting doesn’t pick up he’s dealing himself a tough hand, but again I will see how it plays out.

I know people were assuming BHH was going to Auburn but Kenny Payne is known as a great recruiter who also helped Calipari develop several bigs who are now playing in NBA at Kentucky. I can see why BHH would pick Louisville over Auburn, regardless of what Broome and Phillips do.
