Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Apologies, spent the day out on the lake, summary…

As recruiting goes things can change quickly, maybe it’s on me for saying it was a done deal, but it was as much a done deal as it could be. SLU AD started pushing the tampering allegations and threatening pursuing them and making it public, Barnes got cold feet and basically pulled the plug on Collins coming here. He was supposed to originally visit Monday and it got slowed down, then again they were gonna bring him in this weekend but that’s when the tampering smoke thickened. Again, apologies for calling this one a done deal, but I really thought that was safe to say.

The other aspect of everything going on is NIL, Rick is definitely not transitioning well to it and also isn’t just getting out of the way of assistants who are younger and allowing them to handle it. He hasn’t done a good job communicating with Spyre and they feel in the dark in regards to hoops quite often, Rick isn’t necessarily against NIL but it’s not actively pursued like just about every other current school.

There’s also some rumblings that Powell is back to considering heading for a pro deal, obviously if that happens we are back to 4 open spots. How Barnes and staff fill this roster now will be very interesting, and if you’re worried I get it, I will wait and see how it unfolds before declaring us as crappy or doomed etc. I also think calling for the guy to step aside at this point before having a “bad season” is premature, I agree that if recruiting doesn’t pick up he’s dealing himself a tough hand, but again I will see how it plays out.
Well….. that really stinks. I was concerned about tampering when Collins hadn’t even put his name in the portal yet. But sounds like we are going to be left behind in NIL if we don’t change something

Thought you might’ve spent the day at the lake like Fredo after this news

Barnes needs to get with the times, he is only as good as the players he brings in. We have to embrace the NIL if we want to be successful in college basketball, hopefully he starts working with spyre soon

He said it should be guaranteed. Maybe it’s semantics, but I interpreted that differently than what expectations are. Expecting a good outcome and saying that a program should be guaranteed to make the NCAAT just seems different to me. Because…I can guarantee that we aren’t making it every year from here on out.

This, of course, comes with the other posts that predict doom and gloom right now in the spring, as has happened some the past 5 years under Barnes. It’s like people have trouble reading the room as Barnes has made it 26 of 34 years. Just like when our fans suggest that we will have trouble making the NCAAT 2/3 through the season because we struggled on the road and don’t have enough big wins.
That outcome should be viewed as a disappointment for a program that has our current pedigree. So maybe it's semantics, as you said, but despite the fact that we may miss the mark (missing the NCAAT) on occasion, I don't think anyone can objectively say that season wasn't a failure/disappointment. We are at a point where the NCAAT should be a minimum level expectation. No one expects that we'll make it every single year, but gone are the years we should be shrugging it off or excusing it away outside of some very dire circumstances.

I asked before about the fact we were recruiting someone that was still on a roster and I was told by many not to worry, everyone did it and nowadays the vast majority of kids hit the portal already knowing where they’re going.

Also this …
[Barnes] isn’t just getting out of the way of assistants who are younger and allowing them to handle it. He hasn’t done a good job communicating with Spyre and they feel in the dark in regards to hoops quite often
I for one do not find it problematic that our head coach isn’t simply “getting out of the way” for “younger” assistants. Lmao! Wtf is that? This is the talking point being pushed by a Spyre insider? 🙄

Just bad luck? I’ll be honest I’m not going to be too concerned if Barnes is taking a conservative approach to this NIL business.

Tampering does happen, and nothing would have happened. Disappointed that Barnes felt that way; he’s too nice in shady world. The way someone spoke about it though, Collins was the one who reached out first, and that’s not tampering.

Exactly. CRB is the head coach. Assistants work for him.

Well where do we turn now

I think it proves Barnes runs away from anything dirty like the plague. I would imagine other schools tamper, to be honest

Any ideas on anyone to fill out the remaining 3 (potentially 4) open spots?

A positive is, this may lead us to pursue guys we otherwise wouldn’t have. Lofton jr, etc.

the plus with having a guy like Barnes is you can possibly come in late and still land someone.

We are literally doomed bro lol. There are 0 dogs currently on this roster and we aren’t currently adding any. We are looking at another first round exist, at best.

I'm not entirely sure why people are writing of BJ Edwards as a guy who can't play PG well and can't be counted on for 15-20 minutes a game.

Am I expecting a KC type of impact from him? No. Am I even expecting a ZZ impact from him as a freshman? Not really. But I feel like several posters on here are majorly undervaluing him.

No, it proves he got his hand caught in the cookie jar. If he ran away from it initially the SLU AD wouldn’t have had anything to say because it never would have happened in the first place.

On the lack of communication with Spyre, this isn’t the first complaint I’ve heard in regards to Barnes and doing some of the necessary networking with folks on the periphery. When Barnes first took over he was super accessible and it remained that way until they started winning. Once things got rolling Barnes pulled away from that because he felt like he didn’t need those relationships as much since he was winning. With this NIL thing, Barnes needs those relationships and needs to do those things and I’m not sure he really wants to. We will see how it goes this year but I think there is going to be some serious soul searching for Barnes over the next year.

We’ve gotta be the only program in ncaa athletics that are too soft to bring in a kid over “tampering” concerns. How many programs have been punished for tampering? I’d love to hear that number. I guess we’ll be relying on a freshman combo guard and a 2nd year 5’9 guard to run the offense.

Absolute disaster.
